View Full Version : Reccommend Me Some Free Anti-Virus Software and Maybe Internet Security, You Know the Like :)
Need something free, as my trial with macaffe(sp) just ran out. Well ran out 2 months ago. :compcrash:
Already have and run mal bytes..
Do I need to pay for anti virus/anti internet security etc/free ware protection/adware, you know the sorts?
All I do is run itunes, microstation, msn, this site, bebo, facebook and you/red(tube). ;)
I know I have a lappy, with 4gb ram and thats about it, I think its a acer..
I am not computer minded, even though I work on a computer as a designer..
Cheers .Org, Sally. :)
You don't say what OS you're running.
However, for AV I always recommend AVG Free version. v9.0 has just been released. Get it here:
http://free.avg.com/gb-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
I run Vista's own firewall, but if you're running XP or earlier then download the free ZoneAlarm firewall:
http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/zonealarm-pc-security-free-firewall.htm
Emmm vista I think, mayve the latest XP version, I forget..
So with malbytes, AVG free version and vista's own firewall/Zone Alarm if I have XP..
I would be protected ok? :)
Thanks guys.. And Dizzy :D

soooorrrreeee. Just had to say it. YC recommended AVG after my paid for Norton Antivirus expired....then after a few weeks he said it was carp this time, and was changing over to avast. I kept up for a month or three, and just got hacked off to the point of wanting to throw the laptop through the TV!
So Avast it is! and Adaware alongside.
for the sake of £13 get a fully fleged Anti Virus package like Kaspersky.

I have used the likes of AVG, and Zone alarm and as good as they are, i find them fiddly. I will have to run them for a while as my AV ran out at the weekend :(

Viney is that anti virus too?
Do I need anything else along with this?
Cheers. :)
Me and drew both use Microsoft Security Essentials (http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/) we did have AVG but like dizzy it was slowing down vista a lot.
No problems since installing the above.

i use AVIRA PERSONAL ANTIVIRUS, no problems here.

Cheers. :)Its the full blown Internet security suite, so firwall, AV, Ani phising etc. Its pretty light on resources so shouldnt slow your PC/lapdown too much. I have used it for 2 years now and all is still well.

Yeah for some reason the new AVG slows everything down to an infuriating degree.
I know I was the first one to shout AVG, but now I remember why I don't use it any more.

Antivirus:
Avast Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html)
Firewall:
Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/)
Both Free. Both very low on CPU usage and memoy footprint!
Job done :)

Hmm. I've got the new full AVG (you can find it free if you look in the right place ;) ) and I can't say I've noticed my laptop running any slower than usual

I use AVG (http://free.avg.com/gb-en/homepage) on the one remaining windows machine in our house and find it a little slow, but very thorough. :compcrash:
However to remove a virus threat altogether, why not just use this (http://www.ubuntu.com/)? 8-[
OK, I am a bit of a nerd, but if I can use it, anyone can use it. Also it runs faster and smoother than Windows ever will. I love Linux. :smurfin:

Avast AntiVirus
Spybot Search & Destroy
Adaware
these 3 freebies keep my system safe and happy and use very little resources to do so.
HTH.
AVG 9.0 totally stuffed my system up yesterday. Couldn't even open a browser, despite reinstalling it a second time after system restore.
Giving Avira a shot since last night, seems ok.

AVG makes Kate's Vista laptop unusable when it's running a scan, so I shall be changing it to Avast when I get a chance. Cheers.

Anyone had a problem uninstalling AVG, I can't seem to do it.

Just find the 'uninstall AVG' programme on your computer and it does it automatically. It was as easy as that when I did it.

Im going to throw my weight behind this suggestion. I recently removed Kaspersky from all my computers and have begun using the Microsoft suite mentioned above. Its free, super easy to use, doesnt bug you unless the proverbial is hitting the fan and updates through Microsoft update (which you should be using anyway)

Anyone had a problem uninstalling AVG, I can't seem to do it.
We have just changed at work from AVG, the commercial product, to Sophos (only available as a commercial product and not in shops). We changed due to too many false positives, slowing down the machines, and hogging our servers. (450 computers including laptops, and numerous servers.)
There is a problem in some instances in the removal of AVG. Even a later version of AVG cannot always remove an earlier version automatically and you have to remove using the AVG uninstaller or "via Add or Remove" in Control Panel. When that doesn't work you have to fire up Regedit do a search on AVG and delete all entries relating to AVGx where x relate to version numbers, The you can remove the folder containing AVG and any remaining shortcuts, etc.

When i ran AVG, i had total nightmares uninstalling it, and having to resort to Reg hacks, deleting folders etc. Horrible

I managed to uninstall it last night, but I had to download a program from the AVG website to do it. I then downloaded and installed Avast.

I downloaded it with no problems, and then installed Avast. Have yet to try it out.
AVG runs fine on my XP machine for the time being, so it can stay!
I wish I didn't read this thread....
As AVG popped up and asked if I wanted to Update to AVG 9 free....
So I clicked yes....
then after restarting I noticed the licence was only valid untill 23 NOV 2009... WHooo... 13 days...
So I uninstaleld it and rebooted the system.... only to find it took with it my Windows7 activations serial....
So I've had to re activate Windows7 and reinstall Avira... witch Windows7 doesn't like too much as in a blocked driver !
So If your using Windows7 What Antivirus software are you using?????
Sorry for the De-Rail...
