How much variation should there be in the chain tension?
Cleaning and oiling the chain after Sundays ride I found a tight spot where the chain had 2.5cm vertical travel, whereas the rest of the chain could be moved by 3.5cm.
Does this mean the chain needs replacing? Or is that within acceptable parameters?

I cant remember off the top of my head. On the curvey theres a sticker on the standard chain guard that tells you what the chain should be adjusted to.
But a chain that has a tightspot on it, is more than likely nearing or reached the end of its life and I'd be inclined to replace it sooner than later.
IMHO.

Clean it thoroughly and check again. If there's a tight spot it's probably knackered.
Manual says chain should have 2-3cm vertical travel. But doesn't seem to give a figure for how much variation is acceptable as you move around the chain.

What's the best stuff to use for chain cleaning? I've been using Wurth Chain and Brake Cleaner.

Parafin and a toothbrush / paint brush.
Go to B & Q, into the gardening section, and look for a product called Parascene, they use it in greenhouse heaters, its parafin and much cheaper and just as effective as chain cleaner is.
Chain travel is 25-35 mm from furthest point upwards to furthest point downwards, measuered from the same place obviosuly.
I think. correct me YC if I am speaking shyt.
