Got home last night to find my neighbor standing outside looking into space, as I walked passed he asked if that was my SV sitting outside and then told me how his R1 was just stolen by 2 guys in a white van. R1 was alarmed and chained but no cover. Poor guy saw them drive off at 9:30pm!!! Cant believe it. You hear about it alot, but so close to home Ii shook me up a bit. Are they coming back for my SV? I keep it chained, alarmed and covered. But I guess if they want it, they'll get it.

The R1? Wasn't chained to anything. Just looped around the back tyre. I guess the two guys lifted the back end and wheeled it away?

There's his problem then. Keep yours chained to an immovable object and atleast you can say you used common sense :) If they want it they'll get it but just do as much as you can.

See if you can park yours at a mate's for the next few days. Ride this month had a feture and one of the things it said is if you park your bike in the same spot at the same time every day it makes it easy for thieves to target you. Do you have any neighbours who have a bit of space in their garage in return for cash/case of wine/something else to keep it out of sight for a little while?
Make it as akward for them as possible, well lit area, disc lock, chained to lamp post, but also, keep the chain off the floor. Makes it harder for them to target the chain/padlock.

Your naigbour must be gutted, a nice 6 pack of Carlsberg biker to biker might lift his spirit a little.
Dont supose he got the plates of the van or anything then?

Likely a nicked van our nicked van was used to nick a bike and some quad bikes, also ran a pregnant woman off the road. Cops cornered them with the helicopter and they scarpered, didn't bother to arrest them as 'they weren't commiting further crimes', sigh.

Apparently his mrs got half the number plate as they were driving off. She was upstairs and looked out the window as they were getting into the van.

I'm leaving it at my work for a day or two. It has underground parking for staff only with CCTV. Should be safe here for a while.

Doesn't always work either.
My dad had a brand new FZR1000 (blue/white) taken from outside the house, which had a heavy duty chain, and U lock, both round an unmovable post.
It was stolen from right outside my window (i was about 5), they then lifted it 30m down a small path and drove off.
He was gutted...
If they want it, they will have it... I feel for those without garages, but even they aint fully safe.

Yup..
Do you have a car which can be parked in the way, yeh its a hassle moving the car to get the bike out but its better having a bike than not..

No drive ways, its parked on the street. I'll try and get into the habit of chaining it ti a post (if my chain reaches). Do covers help? Out of sight, out of mind and all that? I think so, but that could be wishful thinking.

I know someone who had his bike dragged over his car, if you're going to use a car to obstruct them make sure its not possible for them just to do this. Good for blocking garage doors with though.
I think covers do help a bit, only someone that follows you/watches your movements will know fully what's under the cover and if they're that bothered the cover wouldn't stop them anyway. Without a cover it's just a nice shiney advertisement to the opportunist, especially if it ain't chained up.

Thieves are getting more and more bare faced these days, 2 of my mates who live within a mile of me have both been broken into for their cars. One had his french window smashed and 4 or 5 lads bundled in and took everything they could like a sorta supermarket dash until the alarm went off. Another mate had his back door kicked down 2 nights ago, heard two big bangs and by the time he got half way down the stairs heard his car screeching off.
Few miles away from me I was going to buy a stolen/recovered bike off a lad who was scared it'd just get nicked again so wanted to sell up. In the mean time he left it in his kitchen, yep, kicked the door down at 3pm and dragged it out.
Just best to keep things out of sight and think about your security and where your keys are.

Well my SV has been looke dat twice and no-one has taken it away...maybe its the topbox rack
I do get worried about theives, but as long as you make it difficult for them (almax chain and ground anchor!) and use several differant locks, then they may just not bother. Also helps if you have the bike boxed in; someone has t really really want an SV if they decide to
1) break all the locks
2) drag it over a car or two
They'd really really want to have a 41,000 mile, 10 year old SV showing war-wounds if they want mine!
I'll not be sleeping tonight now, I'll be on gaurd...tempting fate here

Sheffield sound like a nasty place to live...
I lived in Nottingham for 3 years and that was bad too. shootings are more common then fireworks...

I'll not be heading downstairs if I hear any bangs, no chance!
2 of the lads at football share a house its a town house split over 4 floors, they both sleep on the 4th floor. Both had been out, came home played some X-box live then went to their beds.
Woke up in the morning walked into the room; everything electrical had gone, pc, tv, xbox ps3 every little toy a couple of well paid lads would typically have lying around, all cleaned out. Not only that they'd cleaned out the kitchen of all it's electrical gizmo's as well, even some stuff out of the fridge and all the booze they had in the cupboards, Gone!
To add insult to injury they had got the keys for both cars, moved Simons out into the street and taken off in Chris's
The reason I'd never go down stairs if I hear something, is that when chris opened the family room door the 2nd thing he noticed (after noticing he had been robbed) was a massive kitchen knife on the coffee table.

I know, I got one and its not worth the tools you need to buy to get through the locks and chain + the diesel to drive off with it in a van!!

I live in the nice bit! (although I realised I missed someone out another of my mates got done around 6 months ago) Opposite side of sheffield is where you get the guns n' tings
matt- I agree, mate number one in that story just stood at the top of the stairs with a golf club, not to confront - but to protect.
Similar thing happened to my mate in leeds, just got everything they could while he was asleep upstairs, computers, xbox etc , packed it in his punto and drove off.
lol, lucky for you there was an R1 there!!...
yeeh but not cool when something happens close to where you are. I park my bike on guys campus in London Bridge near the uni/cash point area where loads others park, and apparently there was a sign saying bike thieves operate here!...being extra pre-cautious now!...
look after the ride well dude, and hope you don't get unlucky! As someone above said, if they want it, they'll get it!
Mine's chained to the house, and a disc lock, and blocked in by two cars.
If I wake up in the night and the house is moving I'm definitely not confronting 'em
Similar story but my uncle got his fireblade nicked in the middle of the night with no trace so probably the same lift it into the back of a van scenario!

My keys are in my bike sitting in the garage which at the moment is blocked off by my parents 2 cars then those cars blocked off by my car. Not that they would ant to nick it any ways its a 20 year old 250, not exactly the most desirable thing out there. Can't say I would sit upstairs in the bed room if i heard some one moving about I have some large metal posts and some sharps in my bed room and on top of that my dogs down stairs I dont want the dog hurt or taken and she might give me a bit of help as well.
