I'm not a big fan of christmas. I never really have been, the over commericialisation of it really ruins it.

Today I went to Asda to buy some stuff to make lunch with. I walked in through the front door. To be greeted by a mahoosive fully decorated christmas tree

FFS its only the 10th of November....

Only another 2 weeks and I can get my Tree. Always get it from B&Q and they get there first delivery next week and the second the week after. My excuse is that I would rather have it at home sat in water than in B&Q warehouse. lol

Come on you boring lot, get over yourself. I will never stop being excited for Christmas, I love the build up more than the day.

Christmas IS over-commercialised. Our Asda had their Christmas tree up at the same time as their Halloween stuff......third week of October!

For us, Christmas Day itself isn't important. The whole of December is Dukedolph time, and just doing the Toy Runs and hopefully brightening the day of kiddies who see the bike is what makes it for us. We don't do big expensive presents either. We've pretty much decided that this year we're going to go halves on getting the Duke's wheels powder-coated, and that will be our present to each other.

Yep...

I dont mind the day itself, but honestly do we need a month and a half of build up to it ?

Our local Morrisons had tins of christmas sweets on sale in september, by the time 25th December actually arrives I'm so sick of the whole thing I cnat wait for it to be over.

I blame the commercialisation of Halloween :smt077

Fizz, I agree. I have become more and more annoyed with christmas each year, due t the commercialisation. I won't be asking for presents this year, but I will let my parents wrap up something I will only end up buying myself anyway, so at least they can see me all excited

which reminds me, there is a video on my facebook of when I fitted my fuel exhaust (an xmas present to myself) and fired up for the first time on christmas day in...i cant remember, 2007? I put it on all by myself and hearing the sound was a christmas present nit just for me, but also for my dad :D

mum wasnt impressed.

For me, I just want to go home for christmas, play xbox ith my brother, see some freinds, see my fmaily, watch old bike races with my dad, tinker with one / some of his bikes and talk to my mum and everything. I'll buy people some gifts but I dont want any myself

no doubt i'll have to give a list...i suppose i could do with socks and underwear again thanks mum

My views on Christmas, summed up in a myspace blog of 2006...

Its that mad time of year again. Christmas. We eat too much. We drink too much. We spend too much. Its a time of excess in almost every way.
Supermarkets become an extension of Satan's realm. Throngs of people all filling their trolleys to the brim with party food that no one likes, more bread that Jesus needed to feed the 5000 and a turkey so big that in the dark could be mistaken for a Pterasaur.
They abandon the trolley in the middle of the aisle and go hunting for the next tin of Christmas-based nastiness - then get ****ed because I have the audacity to move it. Well, 'scuse me but I don't want to spend one second longer in the company of these mad people than I have to...and why O why do they take ALL their darling children to do the shopping too? They run around like its a playground, getting in everyones way, creating havoc while being completely ignored by mummy who is reading 'Hello' magazine or picking the most hideous of the organic sprouts left on the shelf. Next time, park your diabolical offspring in front of the TV and do the shopping on your own! I still won't like you, but at least I will hate you a little less and the whole experience will be a little easier for EVERYONE ELSE.
Then said full trolley gets left in the care of the darling children...dear god. These little ****ers have no concept of how much damage a fully laden trolley can do to your ankles. Next time your child runs into me with the trolley I will kidnap it and sell it into slavery.
So you have done your shopping, loaded it into the car (which you managed to park only after you moved the trolley that some lazy ****wit shopper couldn't be arsed to push 8 feet into the trolley bay) and its time to drive home. Now this is where the fun really starts.
The roads at this time of year undergo a bit of a change. The stress of the supermarket and present-buying spills out onto our streets. People seem to be in a rush to get everywhere. Tempers behind the wheel fray to snapping point - horns blaring and fist shaken in disbelief at the **** who just cut you up. You should try being on a bike at this time of year. It's...fun.
So thats it really. The Christmas Spirit summed up in my own way.
Well, bugger it. For me its all about family. Taking time to sit with no TV or other distractions and talk, joke and generally communicate with close family. Whilst getting slightly squiffy and eating too much turkey.
Roll on spring!
This blog was bought to you by a miserable *******.

I think 1st of December is suitable for Christmas decorations in the shops but it does annoy me that they are up just now.

I LOVE Christmas. I love everything about it, the build up the week before, the songs, the wee glimmer you see in all the little ones running about.

I love buying my mum and dad nice presents, wrapping them up (rubbishly I might add) and then watching them open them.

This year is going to be an odd one without my Granma being here but I am going to spend my first Christmas day off in 3 years with my Granpa. Even if he decides he doesn't want to come to ours for dinner, I will get mum to put it on two plates and I will go and sit with him, even if it is just him and me. I will not let him be alone.

I love that you can just cuddle up and watch rubbish on the telly and either go to bed early or go and get drunk with your friends. I love Christmas soo much and I am determined I am going to have a good one this year!

You wanna bet, I hate it. A festival of consumerism, followed by wallowing in self pity when the credit card bills arrive.

I genuinely feel for the parent put on guilt trips about not being able to buy little Jonny the latest gadget. Many years ago my parents asked us what they should buy for the kids. Clothes was our answer, they were desperate. and my parents did us proud. But the look on my 5 year olds face as he picked up yet another present squeezed it and if soft threw it unopened into the pile. Then the tears as he wailed "He didn't bring me my figures" I tried to explain he doesn't bring dolls for little boys which went down like a lead balloon. They are not dolls they are figures (Same difference to me)

OK, christmas. and breathe

My wife/eldest daughter love it. To me it is the most miserable time of year, nothing but bad memories growing up in a fractured family. The wife accuses me of ruining christmas. The truth is I do not like it. Unnecessary expense, over the top feasting. I would far sooner have a meal with a few friends and then once digested have a night out. Instead you have to put up with unwelcome unwanted family. only one mug has to prepare the meal, cook it and then clean up afterwards.

Wife/daughter both work at the local hospital so usually cop for a shift Christmas day. SO expect to come home to christmas on the table curtosy of muggins

I ignore all the hype till Dec 1st. Then, once I see the 1st first Coca Cola ad in Dec - Santa driving the big truck, I drive the family nuts.

Love the parties, the presents, the meals. Even put a CD of Xmas hits on early on Xmas morning with the volume at an appropriate LOUD level, and rock the house.

Shops can do what they like, i ignore 'em.

Xmas, bring on!!

The only thing I like about christmas is the fact my family all get together (though we pretty much do that every few weeks anyway). Lots of food, booze and laughter over old times. Dad inevitably tells the stories of what a terror I was as a kid with a proud grin.

Things'll be a bit easier this year as it seems everyone just wants vouchers. WOOHOO! Most years I hate christmas, but this year's looking good. No shopping hell, no scrabbling around trying to work out what people need or what I can afford.

I'm genuinely sorry for those of you tangled up in the crappy side of it this year. :grouphug:

I only like christmas if I can do it properly - i.e. having my son with me. I have him alternate christmasses. We usually go to my folks in Canada for big snow, a proper tree (cut down by us in the forest and hauled home), a roaring fire - basically vert traditional.

However, when he's not with me for christmas i tend to go away as I don't like being at home without him. Past trips have been India, Jordan, Egypt and this year it's China for both christmas and new year. You'll notice that none of these places really celebrate christmas the way it's done here, so I don't feel so much that I'm missing something.

+1. I don't really want to remember what happened 40 years ago but it's so difficult not to. I don't want my daughter to have similar memories, so I always try to make it nice for her. The list this year is so far very short, extra wide GHDs is top - and those are for me;)

My, What a bunch of scrooges we do have.

Christmas, like life, is what you make it.
Go ahead... have a good time, enjoy life.

Don't like the old memories..... Well then make new ones!!
It is what you make it.
It is and can be what YOU want it to be.
You don't have to be young, old, rich, etc. or anything else.

It's about the birth of Jesus. It's about the spirit of giving.
It's about good times with your family or friends.
Or even having a good time all by yourself if you're all alone.

Choose to be happy. Make it happen.
And have a good time with the attitude that nothing is going to ruin that for me.
No matter what. No one or no thing can keep me from having a good time.

It can be the best time of year or it can be the worse....it's all up you.
There are a million things in life to make you miserable that you have no control over and can do nothing about.
But enjoying the holidays isn't one of them.

Live a little people. Be happy.

I love Christmas BTW!

I'll get me coat now....

Crimbo is what you make of it, not what someone makes of it for you. Why use the excuse of overcommercialism not to enjoy it? Do your own thing. Or is it a British thing to all turn into Victor Meldrew's when it suits?

I have 18 years of something missing on Xmas day, and this one will be the 1st one without mum. But life is for the living, and I intend to cram good stuff into it whilst I can. I'll save miserable for when I'm dead.

Bah humbug to the humbugs, and pass the bottle over here.

Im not normally a fan of xmas (I think a lot of it is because im a jock and hate spending money) but I took Libby into Tesco the other day and she spent about 5 min staring at the xmas tree, then another 5 min staring at the hanging decorations then about 20 minutes watching a musical moose that plays music and dances when you press its leg.

But my main bug bear is that shops stop selling birthday cards in November to accommodate all the xmas cards, slight problem as my kids have their birthdays 23rd Dec, 29th Dec and 7th Jan. Usually have to get their cards in September.

But on a good note, I have bought all my xmas presents except warhammer stuff for my son

A festive snub could see carol singers given the heave-ho-ho from many Lancashire doorsteps.
Householders in the South Ribble area are being urged to turn the volume down on the traditional songsters – by not opening their doors to them.

Homes in Penwortham have already received hand-delivered postcards to put in their doors and windows warning festive revellers not to bother calling because doors won't be opened to them.

The notices have been distributed by Neighbourhood Watch and the Safer Chorley and South Ribble Partnership.

But those in charge of the scheme have been accused of destroying festive cheer.

Police Ch Insp Richard Robertshaw from the partnership said: "Singing Christmas carols is a wonderful tradition which we encourage, as long as children are considerate.

"But while carol singers bring festive cheer to many, we must bear in mind there are residents who for a variety of genuine reasons, are not comfortable with having groups of people at their doors."

He said: "Similar cards were first used two years ago for Halloween, and they have been very effective.

"The scheme has been extended, and I hope carol singers will be as co-operative and understanding as the trick-or-treaters have been.

"Of course the choice of whether to display the cards is down to each individual resident."

One Penwortham resident, who asked not to be named, said: "This card was just put through my letterbox and my first reaction was one of shock. I couldn't believe anyone would be so mean as to publicly turn carollers away. It is hardly in the spirit of Christmas is it?"

The Vicar of Preston Father Timothy Lipscomb is parish priest for the city's Minster, which hosts a spectacular Carol Service.

He said carol singers were part of the Christmas tradition.

He added: "I would hope that Preston people would continue to be traditional."

Fr Timothy said: "It is a terrible state of affairs that people are terrified of answering their doors, so this is what they have to do."

He added: "It is sad that people can't even accept that the reasons people might be doing this (carol singing) are conscientious and noble ones."

Penwortham Churches Together has not discussed the issue but Father Austin Griffin, parish priest at both St Teresa and St Mary Magdalen RC Churches in Penwortham said: "I can understand why some people might be upset and I sympathise with that view.

"There is no way we would want people to feel uncomfortable."

Chief Insp Robertshaw added: "The cards are available from our community police teams and local Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators.

"They have also been left in libraries and doctors' surgeries for people to collect if they so wish."

Therefore it is not my fault, being miserable must be an airborne affliction round here

What a fab thread. I LOVE Christmas....I mean, I really love it. But only when it is actually Christmas. Usually I have put the decorations up at the end of the second week of December, but this year, as with last, I'll do it when the rest of our row does it. Everyone driving up the hill to get to the A46 has to look up at our row of houses and it does look really pretty when we all have our lights up. Thankfully though, we are all a bunch of premature humbugs, so they don't go up too early. I think this year, I might put a tree in the living and dining room as there's more room in the dining room for pressies to go under...but there lies my issue. I just don't want to bother with too many pressies this year. Last christmas we literally had a house that was just cluttered with gifts and nowhere for them to go as there were so many. I'd be happy if we could all just get eachother one or two proper gifts, not too expensive, just nice and a stocking each. That's it. No 100 other gifts lying around the house that noone will ever use.

Family and food are what makes a Christmas good for me. I'm really looking forward to the Stretchie gang coming again this year and my folks coming over for Christmas dinner again.

Bring it on......but not just yet! lol

early to mid november is about right for the shops to start selling crimbo stuff. there are people like me who are skint and it gives me time to buy a little every week until the big day, as i dont do credit cards or such like. i know this sounds cruel but if i cant afford it the kids dont get it, end of. they are to old for 'santa' now so are given a set limit to what they can spend on things, then given a pice of paper and a pen and told to get on with it.. they have the choise of cash or prezzies or mixture of both.

oooohhh and i loooooooooove christmas, not for the celabration of the suposed birth of christ but for the loving company and good time i have with my family and friends.
