always been a dream untill now. October 4th 2010 i plan to fly to LA and drive america in a mustang or dodge charger. there is going to be a hell of a lot of planning invovled as i want to see what the real america is all about.
has anyone ever done this? i have loads research sites im reading and would be good to even hook up with some american orgers!
any places for recommendation? i have a 21 day window to complete this trip.
I dont want to do much tourist areas, but will include memphis being a elvis fan!
Try looking thru' the HUBB, it's for adventure motorcyclists just like me ;o) but you'll probably get a few ideas from there.
Also, pop onto couchsurfing, set yourself a profile then when you go from x to y see if anyone in the area will give you a place to kip (and sometimes food) for free!

i think a simple hand gun would suffice, shotguns are too cumbersome, not particlarly accurate. but good as a deterrant

Oh man I am so envious!
My and a mate want to bike down what used to be route 66 just to say we did it, but may opt for a different route, but it's a long way off happening yet :(

If you,re flying to L.A. you,re only about 90 mins south of the Mojave desert, check it out its other worldy, you,ve got the pacific coast highway north of you as well but ts better doing it southwards from say San Fran, that way you have the sea on your right all the time, California is a truly brilliant place, with loads to do, Las vegas is only 3 hrs away through death valley and yosemite national park is only a days drive north, have fun.

You want to have a go at 6 flags, now thats a theme park, plus halloween is superb, the whole place is shrouded in darkness including the rides, excellent.

I drove a fair bit....
LA - Palm Springs - Lake Havasu - Grand Canyon (via route 66) - Las Vegas - Death Valley - Yosemite (northen route, doh, needed southern route, 13hr drive) - San Francisco.
Best holiday every... Can't beat being 4ft above sea level and 130 degrees, and a matter of 5 hours later, 9974ft above sea level in snow laiden mountains.

We did about 2500mile in June there. Over 19 nights. Flew to SF, had hired a convertible for 15 days and then had 4 nights in San Fran at the end. Done a ton of research (half the fun!) on probably the same sites. Always forget to stick my tuppence worth in when we got back.
Here is the brief we got cos when we got showed a Sebring I asked, "Got anything else?" Hello 4litre Mustang. No extra charge. Except a decent tip for the lassie that helped us out. I would say hiring a Sat-Nag is a must. Saves you a couple of days getting lost in the cities.

Drove down Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1) from SF to Santa Monica in LA. Highlights, Santa Cruz surfing / Monterey/17 mile drive through Pebble Beach and past The Lone Cypress/ The drive down Big Sur / The seal beach at Point Piedras Blancas (you will SMELL it before you see it)

LA is largely forgettable apart from Hollywood Boulevard. Scuzzy central. Love it.
Drove out to Joshua Tree National Park. Stayed in a wee place called Pioneertown. Pop.500.

Bar/venue/resteraunt next to motel out in the middle of nowhere but every night is Saturday night. Biker security. Drink to when ever you leave/pass-out. Saw Peaches play live there, missed Eagles Of Death Metal by a day. See the bar in Dawn Till Dusk? Not as violent or as many vampires but still all sorts of desert living loons. Its all on Google street view. Highly recommended.

Onto Las Vegas. Stayed at Luxor. $50 a night. Drink anything you want for a dollar tip. Just sit at the puggies and the waitresses will serve you "free" drink. Loosens up the wallet does it not!? Get a Helicopter trip out to the west bit of the Grand Canyon. Hired ours from out on the strip. Shoot guns and **** yourself.

A girl from our work rented a Mustang Convertible to drive from New York to Boston. Don't know how well it worked out though (she's moved offices)
I'd love to do this too... sort of a circuit, along the top Boston - New York - Chicago - Minneapolis - Seattle - San Fran - LV - Houston - Nashville - Atlanta - Baltimore - done.

Took Route66 to Seligman via Hoover Dam. Worth the detour instead of the highway proper. One horse town. Pick up your R66 tat. Route66 Fluffy Dice,thanks. Eat well.

South rim of the Grand Canyon is a must and again worth the Trek. Covers a huge area to walk about in and feels like you are the only folks there. Take many Gb of camera memory!
Round and down to Flagstaff, AZ. Along to Kingman and over to Oatman, California.
Pit donkeys rome free and end up everywhere here. Amazing road to get there. Really in the middle of nowhere.

Drove out to Modesto, California. Rev-head heaven. Got took out for dinner/bevvy and hot-tub sesh by the owner of this brief and his g/f after I was caught drooling over his ChevelleSS.

Drove on to San Francisco. Dumped the car after "Bullit-ing" about the hills and down Lombard Street. Parking terrible. Everywhere is walkable. Public transport is fantastic. Buy a tram pass annd hop on and off.

Have a night out in the Mission District and go to http://www.acecafesf.com/. No need to miss any bike racing when you are away. Brummie ex-pat owned. Don't chip the pool balls onto the deck or you will be surrounded by regulars "inviting" you to "PAY THE PIG!PAY THE PIG!" ;):p
Book Alcatrazz as soon as you know what date you will be in SF.
The Hobos are harmless. Just as well as they are everywhere. (Plenty of fake trust fund student type "Trustafarians" too:rolleyes:)
