dyson, nice one. When i had a fish tank we called our cleaner fish Mr Greedy but he kept that tank so clean it was unreal. he also grew at twice the rate of the others and eventually outgrew thw tank and had to be taken back to the fish shop to be rehoused
I miss my fish :(

That red tailed shark is cool. I used to have clown loaches and coolie loaches too. The coolie's are really good to watch, but mine spent most of their time under the gravel. My favourite I used to have was a redline torpedo barb

I liked having them but it took far too much time to clean the tank. And it made the room stink.

my neon tetras were my favourites, especially under blue light.

i had 15 neons but they catfish ate them all at night when the tank light went off :( i brought cardinals then cus they were bigger but he ate them as well :( as you can see the tanks pretty bare now.

that aquarium has no lid its a modern curvey type with a bridge light over the top, ive had it a year now and ive never cleaned it out and it dont smell.

i'll see if ive got a piccy of all of the tank so you can see, its only a 100ltr one so not huge.

You need one of those cleaner fishies mate. They eat all the alage off everything and i mean everything. I had some corals in mine and expected it not to be albe to clean those...but he did. They are ravenous things.

I lost a shed load of little fish overnight once cos the bloody filter came off a little bit and loads of them got sucked into the back of it. I'd only got them that day so dodnt notice for a few dyas...i thought they were hiding and getting used to their new home, then the filter started to judder a bit and ... oh dear :(

I only ever had to clean the gravel on the bottom every now and again with the thing that looks like an austin powers penis enlarger, lol.

Ask your fish shop for one that eats the algae, there are different types that clean in different ways iirc.

Ive got a gravel cleaner I use too, but I also mixed silica sand into the gravel to make it hold less dirt.
The sand fills the voids between the gravel nicely (looks nice too).

Ive got a large gibiceps plec and 2 zebra (nice, rare but now very expensive at about £150 each) that clean the glass and rocks in the american tank as well as a few large clown loach and a raphael catfish that clean the rest.

I have 10 or so synodontis in with the malawis doing a clean up job in there as the coral sand doesnt hold much dirt at all, it just gets stirred up by the fish and then the filter handles it :)

is it a Common Plec - if so it'll outgrow your tank at some point...

http://www.aquariumlife.net/profiles/common-plecostomus/100173.asp

The Tinfoil barbs are great, really active, and shoal together brilliantly. They are aggresive though and we cant have small fish like Neons or small tetra's in there as they eat em. They trashed a shoal of Green Tiger Barbs we had as well. They are the only thing in the tank that the Red Tailed Black Shark keeps away from...

I'll get some pics up here soon enough, I've got 2 sail fin pleco's had them since my tank was a small 60l, that was over 2years ago and they only seem to get bigger when they have some where bigger than they are that they can hide in. I've left them hiding under the same rocks for ages now and they dont seem to have grown for months and months.

Have any of you ever built something for inside your tanks? what marine glue etc did you use?

Edited for you Fizz.

Nice set up you have there too :)

And Fizz is right, that plec is going to be a monster. Nines well over 8 inches now (wahey!) and still growing.
I usually take them to the shop where they get passed onto other people or just end up in the sump tanks looking big with other homeless large plecs :(

I too currently have some driftwood and a volcanic rock and then loads of fake plants.
I found that a few of my fish were eating all the live plants and it was costing me a fortune to keep the tank from looking naked.

Plan on making things from a load of plastic piping, I was going to paste the marine glue over it and roll it in gravel, hopfully to discuise the plastic pipes a bit. I did similar previously using polystyrene, but it was a massive hassle and wondered if anyone had a better suggestion lol.

Good link that fizz, cheers :)

Ive got a couple of small flower pots that Ive knocked the bottom out of.
The smaller cichlids use them as caves to spawn in.
Nice smooth sides for them to stick their eggs to and the outside soon gets covered in algae so doesnt look too bad in the bottom of the tank ;)

Thanks for that Fizzy :)

I was going to pick your brains on malawi cichlids sometime actualy...

Whenever I put new fish into my tank, I always end up losing 1 or 2 of the older fish.
I cant work out why as the water quality is fine and they are ok before the new fish are added.
Its almost as if they just "give up".
My tank is never too overstocked (if anything its understocked).
Any ideas?

When you put new fish in do you often put as many as that in?
They dont look small (like neon small) so I wouldnt be adding any more than 5 at a time. If you add too many it can chuck your nitrate cycle totally out of whack and your existing fish might not be too impressed with the sudden change. Your new fish wont be affected becuase they've come from a dence population tank into your loverly underpopulated one so it'll be brilliant for them but a shock for your existing fish.

I dont always put that many in (but there was only 8 anyway) but I did think about the nitrate levels.
I did a water test before and after and everything was fine.
Theres 250 litres of water too so its not exactly a tiny tank either:confused:

I could add 3 fish and lose 1 of the older ones, its never the smaller fish either.

Its weird as I've never had this problem with anything other than Malawi's.

Seems like you've eliminated water quality issues. However the understocking could be part of the problem, as you're more like to get fish claiming territory. This can lead to more aggression, especially when new fish are brought in.

Do you see any evidence of aggression in the tank before/after the new fish are added?

When you add the new fish, do you move the rocks around in the tank before putting them in?

How many are you adding at a time? (a couple at a time is more likely to cause problems than 5 or 6)

Are the ones that you are losing males or females?

What sort of male to female ratio do you have in the tank?

There is always a level of aggression when I bring in new and smaller fish, some of the older fish are about 7 inches or so and always see the newer fish as potential food :(

Not always as I usually have at least one pair breeding at any given time.

4-8 (8 being the top limit at a time)

Are the ones that you are losing males or females?

Males this time, but theres no pattern I can see.

What sort of male to female ratio do you have in the tank?

I try to keep 1 male to 2 females (lucky bugger!) as I have had more success this way in the past with both malawi and other cichlids.

Well most of what you're doing sounds fine, but I would suggest moving the rocks around before adding new fish in future. This shouldn't give you any problems with breeding pairs - we do it all the time and the fish still like to get jiggy :smt049

The new smaller fish will be fine as long as they have smaller rocks to hid in when the big fish get hungry ;) But it sounds like the new arrivals could be squeezing territories and increasing the likelihood of aggression amongst the exiting fish. Moving the rocks will disrupt the territories (fish are easily fooled!) and should hopefully help your situation.

Been known to forget where I live after a few drinks fizz, does that make me a fish? Naaa just a muppet I spose lol.

8 Fish SP, fair enough looked like more at first glance I thought you had the whole tank full of new bagged up fishes. 8 of that size isn’t too bad I wouldn’t put any more than that in in one go, personally speaking obviously its not a law or anything lol each to their own. J

Picked up a few new ones myself this weekend, previously had a few German blue rams but they died from the stress of moving the tank around the house during the renovation. But now the tank is set up in its designated spot in the living room, its safe to buy some more. I got 4 of the standard ones as they’re less nippy ZAN ZE GERMANS.
Oh got myself a novelty fish too, a black ghost fish. Always wanted one but I know they get quite large so I’ve never dared to buy one, however this guy was the last one in the tank after another bloke bought his little friend while I was there so I offered them £5 for him and they accepted. STEAL! Get some picys up tonight.

I want a tropical tank, but am put off by the initial outlay, and I'm also not to sure how Kate would feel, about looking after them during the week, while I'm away! :(

first months with the fish which often die is a bit of a bind its really annoying until the set up is etablished. then its the best ornument you could buy, ice breaker for any guest its a visual feature of any room.

Cant imagine not having one from now on tbh.

True intial cost can be heavy. We bought our 300litre tank for half its retail price, it was an ex demo one from the local fish shop... so you can find a bargain if you look around...

However... once the filter is setup and mature. Its no work at all. I feed mine once a day when I get home from work and thats it.

Every other weekend I do a 20% water change, siphon the water out, pour new water in. Takes 30 minutes if I dont faff about to much when I am doing it.

It really is naff all work. The only time you might expect fish loss is during the intial setup period. Some fish are sensitive to water levels i.e. So if you choose your first fish carefully you should be OK, the key thing is patience and waiting till your filter is mature when setting up a new tank IMHO.

@ Leedsmatt, that setup looks nice

matts's got an external filter tucked away there somewhere, you can see the outlet on the top right.

And those angels are fairly big cichlids ;)

There are stacks of people selling stuff second hand, so that can be a good way to get started on a budget.

Why thank you kind sir, I'm very proud of my set up. Thats not to say I dont constantly change it. Currently Im planing to build a big feature for the left hand side, move the bog wood to the right and get rid of some rocks. PS all the plants are fake.

Well thank you as well :D I'll take that as a compliment tts just under 2years old I've had that tank for a month less than the house so its 23months old to be anal. A fair few of those fish are ones which were re-homed from my previous tank into this one. At the moment I run an external fluval 205 and an internal fluval120. I was always told if you keep the water moving it keeps things much cleaner and its worked a treat for me. I do a 40l water change every 2 month and just clean the glass with the magnetic wiper (grey block seen on the wide photo) maybe once every 2 weeks.

Aye, I've got a few big waste producing fish in there, angels, gourami, sharks, rams. Even the tetra just swim about crapping everywhere.
But I've got a good clean up crew, 4 loaches, 6 shrimp, 2 plecs and 2 corydoras. I dont feed them any algee pellets and in return they seem to keep it almost spotless. Its work out as a really self sustained community in there.

Shrimps are cool. We have some in ours for a while it was ace when the shedded

If you are going for more, get some more Silver Sharks, they like to shoal and from what I've read they like to live in groups rather than on their own.

Oddly enough, I'd was thinking the same thing this weekend. Thought about getting some more clown loaches and silver sharks but the silver sharks can get MASSSOUIVIVE! and I've already got quite a few growers in there so decided against it.

Fizzy Fish has turned my malawi tank into a wh0re house...

I took the advice and moved all the rocks about to see what would happen.
I now have loads of clean looking rock and everything in there is getting jiggy!!

I was thinking of either:-

Adding more rock (theres about 70 kilo in there at the moment)

Or

Changing the rock to a more pebble type (but bigger) and stacking it in with bogwood.

Something like this but with the wood mixed in with the rock:-

I knew i'd be getting myself a new tank, a much larger one than my previous 90l tank but as we were buying a house I thought it made more sense to wait until I had decided where I'd be putting it so we got one that would fit best rather than having to try and find a place to keep it, and it then looking out of place.

I prefer the volcanic style rock you currently have, its got loads of caves etc already built into it. Plus all those little pockets fill with bacteria which help keep your tank healthy, if you get smooth rock the bacteria will get cleaned away.

Id not thought about the Tufa rock being more porus, Nice point ;)
From memory its calcium based too so helps with the PH levels in the water too.
I guess I just want a visual change though, its been in there for about 4 years now.

I know what you mean, I change stuff quite often. Hence the desire to build a feature. Somewhere for the reclusive fish to hide, but remain in view of the living room.

Hi everyone. Thanks to "Owenski" for pointing me in the direction of this thread. Thought i'd ressurect it.

If anyone in the Lincolnshire Area is interested I have some Baby Fry Mollies for sale. I have 9 dalmatian coloured ones that are just about an inch long now. 2 months old. Feeding well. £1 each. 5 for £4.75 or all 9 for £8

The other female in my tank has just given birth to 16 today so need to make space, these are black and all seem to be doing pretty well. I'd consider selling these but ideally i'd like to see how they mature.

Just thought i'd throw it out there if there are any tropical fish keepers in my are on the forum.

Cheers.

Not seen his thread before but seeming as ive now seen it, here is a pic of my 240ltr tank...

Kwak, im guessing all your fish are dead now if you havent cleaned it in over a year... or your red tailed shark has jumped out of the tank and dried up on the floor...?
