As I spend fair amount of time away from home, I usually take my portable DVD player away, to watch movies in my hotel room, without paying hotel rates for their movie channel. (no not the porn channel :p)

But taking away enough DVD's or the right selection can be a pain in the A....

So I saw this gizmo on Ebuyer and I can hook up one of my portable hard drives to connect to it.
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/167205

I can then rip my DVD collection to the hard drive and carry that around instead of loads of discs

So I want to know which ripping prog is better Xvid or Dvix or are they both the same?

I've seen movie files ripped onto stand alone hard drives, playing through TV's and the quality is more than good enough. Plus I've seen how many files you can fit on a hard drive.

This gizmo even supports USB sticks, so I could rip to one of these, which are a bit more robust than a hard drive

My DVD player at home supports Dvix so that might sway my choice

Having read the ebuyer discussion group about it no-one really thinks much of it.

They are pretty much the same in terms of quality, xvid is an open format so anyone can mess with it and install the codec for use with any software for encoding. Basically use xvid as its more flexible.

The reviews seemed pretty positive? I'll see what else has been written though

Thanks, I wondered what the difference was

Here's an update, I didn't buy that gizzmo from ebuyer, but I bought a 250Gb hard drive media player off ebay. Cost £44 + £10 P&P. So a bit more than that gizzmo, but connects to the tv and has a remote control too

Best thing was the seller had left all the music, and videos on it. Incl complete Father Ted & Red Dwarf in Avi format.

I found that my Nero software had a prog for ripping DVD's to MPEG 4 format, incl HiDef format.

Which was good timing as my poor old DVD player gave up the ghost in the last hotel.

Hey, just thought I'd say that I've just bought one, and its ace.
Really easy to use, full setup menu for dif. resolutions, sound setup, etc...

Just so you know, when using it, switch it ON before plugging an external hard-drive. If its plugged in before switching on it doesnt always show up files, plugging after it runs perfectly!

The remote is a little annoying, small and light.

Remember you can use this on hotel tvs, friends tv, etc.

Supports standard yellow red white aux cables, or hdmi cables.

Well worth it, have I sold it to you?

I was stuck with only the free channels at the hotel on Wednesday, and my subsistance won't pay for the movies, so I was lost without my dvd player.

Just got to rip a few DVD's to my Media drive now, only got 130gb to fill up :p

Xvid is normally better. It's an open format under constant development. Divx has been commercialised out of all recognition.

Most divx playing dvd players will play xvid as well.

Can I ask what software you use to rip dvds with?

I'm using Nero, which converts them to Mpeg4. File size is reduced to DiVX or Xvid size.

I think that there was a free download of Nero9 which I downloaded. I've got it somewhere and I'm pretty sure it was a full version of Nero9, not a cut down version, or a time limited option

All the other supposed 'Free' software has been trial versions. There must be some freeware ripping software out there somewhere
