I want to replace my heel protectors with some nicer looking ones. Are there any for the SV or do the heel protectors for another bike/model fit?

Also does anyone know what the purpose is of the vertical piece of metal with the 3 holes (I think) that holds the heel protector at the end. Most other bikes do not have this, just the two bolts at the front.

If you can find some, then carbon fibre ones look good and do a good job of keeping your heels from going in the chain or rear wheel. I wouldn't buy the Ebay ones with SV cut into them for two reasons, the first being on grounds of taste, the second because they are badly designed/made and the sharp edges they have rip your boots to shreds (I had similar on my GSXR1000 when I bought it, they soon went in the bin).

That metal bracket really doesn't serve much of a purpose. It's meant to be a steadying bracket, but I removed the one on my naked SV because it corroded and never noticed any difference

It has two bolts so assume you can just replace that part.

Not on a pointy SV, the curvy had seperate ones that bolted on. Your pointy has all-in-one footrests and heel plates. I forgot which model you had. On both my SVs I polished the heel plates to almost chrome-like finish, which looked miles better than the scuffed up stock painted efforts that it left the factory with

i have some of these http://www.banditmaniashop.co.uk/suzuki-sv1000-sv650-heel-plate-protectors-set-of-2-1363-p.asp

may not be to everyones taste but in black on a black bike not bad and also show boot scuffs less. quite pricey but ok in my opinion.

I had mine powder coated for a tenner, then used a piece of film from http://www.premierpaintguard.co.uk/ over the heel plate. Still looks as new after a few months.

Edit; Not the best pic, but you can see the slightly shiny surface of the film.

What are the two bolts for then plus the one at the end if they don't come off as it's one piece as you say. Can't see why you can't unscrew and replace them.

If you're looking at the right side footrest then the two bolts at the front of the heel plate hold the brake master cylinder on, and that's all.

Here's a photo of some I have kicking around my garage. - you'll see there's no way the heel plates can be detached

Shame, I wouldn't mind having a nicer looking heel plate like you get on some sports bikes, this is all just a large lump of metal, nothing refined about it, plus I have lots of scuff marks from my boots on the right one. Anyway, I like the idea of polishing them, see if there's a friend who is handy in doing things like, guess they need to come off and you need to polish them with some kind of machine?

Bikes are made to be ridden, not treated as driveway ornaments. I'd quite happily paint the bloody lot satin black and chuck a bucket of water over it once a month just to stop the dead flies from damaging the paintwork.

Speak for yourself, mine lives in the dining room and is kept polished and clean at all times, other than when it's on the road being ridden, and even then it gets cleaned when I get back home. I've spent a LOT of money putting the good bits on to customise my SV, and I would never clean it with a bucket of water! Bikes are to be admired and maintained in pristine condition, cars are what you through a bucket of water over ;)
