Was half cut at my mates a few nights ago and conversation lead on to this, I thought he was winding me up! Just got round to googling it now.

Am I the only one who had never heard about Sea land? Can't help but find it fascinating/hilarious.

http://www.sealandgov.org/About.html

And the reason we got onto the topic; piratebay (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/01/12/pirate_bay_buys_island/).

They even have their own stamps, coins, passports and royal family!

Is that sealand in the picture?

I have sailed a 34ft yacht between these pillars and although it isn't that impressive in the picture it is massive when you are in a small boat.

I will add it was a very calm day when I did it

This is mad...never heard of it before, but the bit about the germans/dutch trying to invade etc sounds like an action film!

Dicky Ticker

No they still have guns on there.Look at the size of the one in the picture --and it works

Wideboy

i wonder what would happen if you actually invaded

Well the germans/dutch did and he somehow took them out and imprisoned them. In fairness it might be worth a pop it's worth £60m+ according to that article.

it was burnt down, last i herd it was being refurbed, the legs go right to the sea bed and that where the living quarters are
ahh I see thought they'd just be concrete or something that's good.
Read about the fire just now, it was in the news 2006

Sally - yeah that's it pictured

I can see it from my beach, it's for real.

There was once a ban on taking any surplies to it from the UK

The guy that owns it sounds like a bit of a plonker, I wouldnt cry too hard if the Navy torpedoed the platform.

The rideouts there are way too short.

I wouldn't as he has a shotgun fro repelling invaders

As for suggestions of the Navy torpedoing it, well it ain't gonna work

The structures have been there since the war, a couple of dinky torpedos arn't going to replicate 50+ years of North sea wave action, the're hardly going to scratch the surface.

Plus they're round, so torpedos going to deflect off in another direction :p

your sv would corrode badly riding round that platform.

It must hav ealso been on one of the 'king's' good days !! I remember back in the 80's when I sailed with the Ocean Youth Club, this loony taking a potshot at our boat with his shotgun - from long range thankfully.

He has 2 distinct advatages, a a fixed platform to shoot from and a height advantage.

Maybe a night assault using limpet mines and mini subs would work :p

Plus we've used this method before and it's proven........ Sunk the Turpitz

No they wouldn't  otherwise they wouldn't have invented the bouncing bombs to destroy the German dams in the last war, they would have used torpedos

Fine. Get the Navy to nuke it then, theyve got these big expensive submarines that have never shot at anything yet, target practice for a Trident.

The dams were protected by torpedo nets, that's why the bombs had to bounce.

The dams were protected by torpedo nets, that's why the bombs had to bounce.

But also the needed the bombs to sink near the bottom of the wall and then explode, too create the shock wave which destroyed the wall, not the explosion. Which is why torpedos wouldn't work on these beauties

Hmm. Modern torpedoes are designed to detonate underneath a ship and break it's back so that it sinks as fast as possible. Not too useful against a pair of concrete pillars which are already resting on the sea bed.

Best bet is a bunch of divers and an effing big demolition charge.

As I live nearby I can't agree to this :p

I can't see what the fuss is about, it's a harmless state that doesn't bother anyone, unless they get too close. Just leave em be

Sending a Trident missle is a bit extreme for half a dozen people who don't have access to a nuclear arsenal ;)

Years ago i used to go with a girl that worked on a fish stall at Old Felixstowe & the guy that owns Sealand used to visit there every so often,l i remember her telling me he had his own currency & stamps etc.

I believe he tried to start selling duty free tobacco & spirits there a few years ago, that was soon stamped on though.

ps. Keithd - They aren't just designed for proximity explosions, they can be programmed to explode on contact too

Still, I'd rather just ignore them than blow them up for being sea-pikeys :D (love that expression)

Forget the torpedos, I don't think it'd remain habitable for long after a few rounds from one of HM's destroyers.

How do you get on and off Sealand? Is it helicopter access only?

The guy is a tool, he shot and killed a 'trespasser' back in the day but jurisdiction for a trial could never be decided. The RN don't want to know as it's not a ship (tho it was floated in position) and other agencies say it's a wreck and aren't interested so they guy just sort of sits there with it.

The Red Sands forts are far spookier...

I had a browse around, they use a RIB and have a winch to haul it up to the platform.

Wasn't the initial idea of declaring the island it's own principality, purposefully to evade tax?

Sounds like a plan to me.

Why blow it up? Assault and install some servers somehow, all the Nigerian fraudsters would be queuing up to buy email accounts from you.

Ok probably not, but it would be an entertaining evening.

I think he's already got a load of servers in there - that's the main profit from it.

Surely he isn't really best placed for a server farm, he cant exactly have fast access to the Internet out in the middle of the sea.

Yes but Sealand doesnt have the demand to have high speed fibre leading to it like the island of GB and uh USA.
