View Full Version : reflector on numberplate for MOT
not SV specific but my mate needed a reflector on his KTM Adv plate to pass his MOT - I have seen this on cars before but thought it was just for imports. Shouldnt all UK spec bikes have rear reflectors?

yes but when you take of the SV's huge snow shovel of a tail end you also loose your reflector.
hence i have a little round stick on one on my plate.

most bike MOT stations keep em in stock (well mine does anyhow) they charge a quid and just stick one on.
my tail tidy has an inbuilt reflector;)
Well you learn something new every day. I don't recall having one pretty much any bike I'v had since the 90's. I guess the MOT garages I went to see were more practical and thought that a new invention called "The tail light" was better and than a reflector as well on the back as this would have as much point as holding up a piece of paper to stop a bullet.
Strangely though I get the idea of having them on the side of a bike but we don't have that law unless I have missed something?
Edit - Just looked at some pics of the curvy I brought a couple weeks back and although the rear fender has been chopped it still has a reflector - I'll get my coat ..... :smt033
a new invention called "The tail light"
Which doesn't always work,
esp. when parked up at the side of the road :smt102

Just tell your MOT man if he wants the sale that bad you will give him the quid for the reflector, just don't stick the bleeder on yer bike.
You have to train these MOT types.

Hence 2 number plates, one with chunky reflector. One without.
A lot of older designs had the reflector integral in the tail light lens/cover, easy not to notice it's there.
Whats the deal with it having to be near the rear lights, etc ??
ie. Would the reflector on a top box count ???
..... re. rear light ....... doesn't work when the bike is parked does it !!! ;-)

hmm will see if i can fit one on my tiny plate (my mot man dosent mind about exhausts and plates, his is about 3cmhighx5cm lol) but not sure about reflector but may get 2 of the small ones one for mt and one for sv :/

(although i may be the only one)Ceck out xXXBadgerXxx and his SPAS (see his sig)
ie. Would the reflector on a top box count ???!!! ;-)Don't know about MOT but wuld be pretty usless in use relying on every driver having full beam on to reach that high.

As long as there is one red reflector facing squarely to the rear, preferably on the centreline of the bike then there is no stipulation as to where it must be. Shame there isnt a reflecting surface built into to the rear light lens really, like on a lot of cars.
Just fit one anywhere, I guess the top box reflector should count, as long as the box is on the bike it kind of tested as part of the bike, same as the brake light fitted to some top boxes would act as the brake light for test if the standard one didnt work

I thought any* light that is fitted had to work? So if a car has 2 sidelights each side, all 4 have to work? (*not the lights that are not tested like front fogs & spots)

Nope, the only time that applies is for brake lights (all brake lights *fitted and connected* must be tested - note disconnected lights dont get tested). The other lights are then tested as to Mandatory fitement:
Bike: 1 side, 1 dip, 1 head, 1 brake, 1 rear tail, indicators front and rear
Bikes do not require: Number plate lamp, fog lamps or hazards and these are not testable even when fitted
Car: 2 side (frotn and rear), 2 dip, 2 main, 4 indicators, 2 side repeaters and hazards (both post 86), 1 rear fog (centre to offside) all brake lights fitted
Any other lights fitted are not testable
There will be some other allowances for older vehicles etc
To make a vehicle 'Day Light use Only' the front and rear sidelights must be permanently disconnected, masked or painted over. The only item in signalling then testable is the horn

There can be a big difference between what's required on the road and what's required for an MOT. I would say that any light is really only needed if it's dark though.

^^ ahh ok i see it was just starting to get dark and they just moaned about not having a lit up plate and the fact it was dirty and sead it should have a number plate light,,, bla bla bla lol
the only thing is the lights are stupidly bright and light up most of the floor behind me but carnt do any thing about it :/
