So far, mine has been pretty good on oil - about 200ml over the last 4000 miles, however will pack a litre just in case.
Oh well, you know what the consumption is like then Matt, so a litre is possibly a bit of an overkill. I put my oil in 250ml Lucozade bottles. Easier to pack and can discard them as they get used. Also the 996 uses 15/50 FS, which isn't easy to come by.
Do you want me to bring a spare diesel can for you? ;-)
:smt098:smt098
No doubt Claire's bike will use anything you have spare! She will be bringing a litre as well, but she may not know that yet! :D
Bet Claire thinks she'll be carrying a different type of litre bottle :smt030

Gave up trying to find them in the end David and rode home on metal to metal. We'll have a map with us this time :smt115

I may even try and get most of the way up on the Friday, if we're late in. Even if I come up on the Saturday I'm aiming to meet up for some, if not all of the ride.
Besides, Cumfy has promised a wee glass, or eleventeen:smt023.

seconded Andy..
last year we had an ace run up real nice day and good ride but it took us 10 hours as we picked diff folks up on the way and took the twisties.. arrived quite late- after 8pm I think.. everyone else was fed and watered and having a beer etc etc.. we got in showered and bed .. lost a "night" and was tired for the next day ..
this year its a 5 hour nice ride with stops and hope get there at about 4pm to chill out and relax...
Paul.. there is a road that runs parallel with the motorway- the orig road b4 motorway was built.. . Mattsv knows it..pm him

lost a "night" and was tired for the next day
Now you really are getting old ;)
I have ridden Scotland to England via the twisties a couple of times now, I wouldn't discourage anybody from doing it, of course it takes longer, but for me at least I arrive more refreshed. Being tired the next day I don't find an issue because after any 250 mile + ride, especially with a drink afterwards, I sleep like a dead man!
Running a marathon is difficult, it takes a lot of training, is a feat of endurance and stamina, and you finish sore and unable to do anything except drop to the floor. By comparison, walking 26 miles is easy, we all walk some some extent every day, and most of us could go out and do it tomorrow if we had to, you just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other.
That's the difference between motorway and twisties for me, twisties is just riding my bike, an everyday task that I can do all day long without getting overly tired. Motorway is a long boring slog, sitting in one position, getting bored, and you arrive mentally dead, stiff and sore.
What I wouldn't recommend anybody doing, and I won't do it again, is turning it into a rideout. It really slows you down, and turns it into a 10-12 hour day.
Don't get me wrong, I thought last year was a great day too, but I didn't intend to make it a ride out, it was just "I'm going this way, I'll be knocking on 70-80mph all day, and anybody who is confident enough to keep up, welcome to join me", but inevitably it did turn into a normal rideout where we ended up with a large group travelling at the speed of the slowest member and stops became a 30-60 minute social event rather than a cup of coffee in a petrol station.
Next time I ride it, I'll either be doing it on my own, or teaming up with one other similarly paced rider who I know and have ridden with before, and I won't be publishing my route and timings on the org with an open invitation for people to join me. On a long journey like that, you need to be focussed on the road and the miles in front of you, and maintain your pace, not worrying about who is behind you, and wants to sit at 55mph.
Tomorrow I'm doing Birmingham to Holyhead, Dublin to Larne (Belfast), Larne to Londonderry via the Antrim coast. My ferry check in is at 11:30, so I'll leave here at about 6:30am to give myself loads of time to get to Holyhead, meeting friends from Scotland in Larne at 4:30, then heading to Londonderry via various Antrim coast tourist attractions, arriving late evening. I'll do about 450 miles and be on the bike for 12-14 hours with a 2 hour ferry ride in between. The only significant bit of motorway I'm touching is from Dublin to Belfast as I have a deadline to meet after getting off the ferry. I have no qualms about it at all :smt091 :smt100 ;)?
If anybody wants to do the twisties and your fairly good at carrying speed and covering distance cross country, don't be put off by the posts above, go do it, it's perfectly achievable and IMO at least (and nobody else has to agree before I get flamed) it's a better way to travel. But keep it quiet ;)
Yeah Steve we will all be riding down together!
Spearies, we need some pratice in before this, we have hardly been out this year!
Less drinking, more riding...
Lyk feck thats going to work :)
Thanks for backing me up Sally, so the ride out tonight you are definitely a NO, right good glad we got the practice, lol. You muppet!:D

aye my thinking is get up there as quickly as possible (sticking it about 80 though) fine goingt hrough the twisties if we can maintain pace but im thinking straight up the m6 to be honest!

Really good road, quiet and pretty straight. Gives you a break from the motorway for a bit.
If everything works out ok I'm hoping to catch you guys on the M6/M74.

I'm planning on fastest route satnav can mastermind with the odd concentration/fuel break/stop all the way up there. If I fancy some proper roads once there then I'll unpack and explore 8)
PM / email me (pm box might be full) nearer the time for a plan. won't derail this too much more.

I thought that as I was typing it but didn't want to **** everyone off with my own localised plans on getting up there.
Unless people are planning on meeting en route? (no crashes, fog, or painfully excessive journey times allowed this year ) took us 12hours from sheffield last time!
I am thinking Motorway as far as Carlisle, and then either:-
A74M all the way - 145 miles 2hours 42m - arrive bored and squared off tyres
Or this:-
Clicky (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Carlisle&daddr=55.7026207,-3.6774841+to:Inverarnan,+Arrochar&hl=en&geocode=FRGiRQMdwDzT_ykPa-4-3-F8SDEtaBW6tkMKXA%3BFVz0UQMd1OLH_ymdZF39fQmISDEhB0H hGWgMEw%3BFWCOWwMd5Pe3_yntMC85_RyJSDFra7alfBG1Rw&mra=ls&dirflg=h&sll=55.613505,-3.82868&sspn=2.218334,6.696167&ie=UTF8&ll=55.466399,-3.702393&spn=1.113258,3.348083&z=9&via=1)
161 Miles, 4 hours 33 minutes but avoids Glasgow and takes in some great roads - I drove the Moffat - Biggar stretch a couple of weeks ago - nice bit of road that ;)
Any views on that route???
NB we still need to get to Carlisle first from Quiffs, which is 150 miles so will probably stick to the M6 for that bit

We would love to travel up on a twistier route than M-way, but there is no direct route and once you get rolling, accidents/roadworks not withstanding, you can make good easy progress. A lot of the scenery is lovely and as a rider, I can actually take it in.

balls to that. shortest time possible. ill need 2 pee stops at 25 min intervals once going (its the leathers there too tight i tell the' ) after that im sorted :)

Well heres one to beat then..Peg came home from the Isle of Skye Tuesday, bimbled down Glencoe, via a detour of about an hours stop in a Glasgow suburb and 3 times pee stop, 459 miles, left at 11am got home to Halifax at 7.30pm!

TBH mate, once you get into the central belt the road from Carluke through Airdrie is just a straight main road full of local traffic, with lots of speed limits interrupting progress. Then once you get out to Condorrat you get back onto a not bad road all the way to Balloch, but again you've got regular towns to go through such a Milton of Campsie, Lennoxtown, etc, and it can be quite a nadgery route with slow progress.
I would join the motorway again just south of Glasgow and head for the Erskine Bridge which is the fastest route to the campsite. This route takes you down the clyde valley from Lanark back to the motorway through some fantastic twisties.

If that isn't enough twisties for you then put this into your journey earlier on to compensate for having taken the motorway through Glasgow, takes you over the fantastic hairpins of the Hartside Pass.

I've done two GMs now, and the first we went the Glasgow route, and last year I insisted on going via Stirling, I prefered the Stirling route, pretty much same mileage IIRC.
Don't forget that we were at a different campsite for GM2. We are back to the same campsite this year as for GM1 at the head of Loch Lomond (remember I was trying to tell you you could block in my Vectra in the car park as it wasn't moving anywhere all weekend, and you got ****ed off with me thinking that I was shouting at you for blocking in the car )
You could still go that way, but you'd probably add about 10-15 miles, because you'd need to go too far North, and cut back south again at Crianlarich.
The A80 was also plagued by a long 40mph limit for a long time, don't know if it's still there (Q, KG, IP?), but that wuld defo make Glasgow quicker.
Stirling is a nicer route if it's feasible.

Can't make my mind up whether to cut across the A66 to the M6, then head north - boring.
Or up the A68, around Edinburgh then up via Stirling, Dunblane, Callander.
For those of you north of the Border, is the Stirling, Dunblane, Callander route decent or should I just blast up the M6/M74?

M6 M74 yes boring....Stirling, Dunblane, Callander route much nicer. Loads of places to stop, you'll see bikes parked up...other route be paying £1.28 a litre. Depends on how quick and boring you wanna bereally. Pegs just come back from there so I'm typing what hes saying :-)

I'm not riding this one anymore guys, I highsided the bike in Ireland this weekend and landed on my face and hands (well visor and gloves, but you know what I mean), then shoulder and legs went down and I slid on my belly for a bit. My visor, gloves and textile jacket are all wrecked, and my lid definitely went down but mainly flat on my visor, and even though the rest of it doesn't look bad in terms of scratches, the chin vent is broken off, etc, so I don't know if I should ride in it again or throw it away. I'm OK, but pretty sore and stiff all over and can't get my watch over my black and blue hands or my wedding ring on my finger this morning, and have a gouge out of one knee and bruising to my right shoulder and left leg. The bike is actually not too bad, just a broken nose cone and a mirror, but I fear I may have bent the forks, won't know 'til I get them off. I've ridden 500 miles since and I've still got my XT600 to potter about on locally, so I'm still riding. I'll probably be fine physically by the end of the month, but I'm not up mentally to ride the GM and I'm not prepared to go and spend hundreds of pounds in new gear in the next couple of weeks. I'll just turn up in the car on the Saturday evening and spend the rest of the weekend visiting friends and family.
I NEED TO F***ING SLOW DOWN!

Ouch!! - ditch the helmet its not worth the risk. Come up on saturday I'm sure you'll be made welcome and there will be space to bunk down if needed. Just make sure you get better and sorted. BTW where abouts in Ireland where you!

As usual I was attacking the corners like a bat out of hell Dizzy, it touched a patch of gravel that had been dragged off an unsurfaced side road and I was off it a split second. I'm going to fix the SV and if I don't slow myself down after this I'm going to sell it and buy something slow and heavy. I'm an idiot! Anyway this is derailing the thread as it's nothing to do with the GM.

You and Vale!
F**k the derail......Scary stuff, but easily done. Sorry to hear you took a tumble, but glad you've come away relatively OK.
Will see you in a few weeks.
Fred
Glad to hear you're not too banged up mate. Highsides are the scary ones no-one wants to experience. When it's because of something random it's bound to take the edge off your enjoyment, so you're absolutely right to take a step back rather than force yourself to do it anyway.
We'll see you there on Saturday and back on a bike at some rideout beyond that. No rush, mend yourself for now.

Take it easy for a wee while you'll soon be back enjoying it.

While I'm here, its looking 50/50 whether i'm going to make it to the GM, at the moment the house is a complete bombsite and i need to get it finished before i can think about coming along.
Now someone could be nice and help Abby out by offering to take the lead rider role from me this year if i cannot make it.
I'm not best pleased but sadly i need to get the house done before the storage runs out and things start to get really expensive.

Luckily Abi called me the other night and I thought "Hey, the rideout's probably soon isn't it". Otherwise I'd have logged on in August and gone "Where are we going? Who's coming? What day is it? Oh."

I've got one of those, it's mint... wee bit of comfort and it keeps you warmer too. Though even though it's almost impossible to deflate when you want to put it away, I still always manage to somehow undo the complicated plug while getting into bed ****ed. And no matter how hard you try and blow it back up while lying on it, it doesn't work :(

What's to be done?
Could we not try and organise an SV Ecosse 'house makeover crew' to make sure you can make it ??

No idea of IP's riding ability, but I personally believe you need a quick lead rider otherwise the group can bunch up. That allows the nervous or slower ones some clear road and the quicker riders room to play. With markers at every junction and the odd re-group that should allow most peeps to ride at a pace they want.

IP is quick enough when he wants to be.
I pretty much sat behind Carelesschucca on GM1 swapping places with Stuartyboy the entire day, who was kind of sharing the lead role. I lead the Kinlochleven loop to give Carelesschucca a break. I would have offered to do it if my head was not in the place that it is in now, but to do so at the moment would be dangerous for me, I'm not even riding the rideout, that decision is made and I'm going to stick to it regardless of how I feel in three weeks time. IMO you need a rider that can carry speed safely and maintain a good pace all day long, without feeling the need to back off for a bit. Being lead bike does put you under pressure to keep the pace up and doesn't really allow you to back off. If you think not being able to chillax for the whole day may be an issue for you, then either you shouldn't volunteer for it, or you need to share the role with somebody else and take it in turns.

Get JamesMio to take up through dumfries and galloway avoiding at least half of the M74, what a great couple of roads. Well worth the detour.
Happy to be tour guide but I might not make it this year - will only know pretty much at the last minute (get the keys to our house on the Friday, so I might be busy that weekend!).
If anyone's around my part of the world at 5pm ish on Friday and I'm free, I'll glady take a ride up with you and show you the sights.
Heads up peeps - the plan well the idea I have in my head is that we will have a leader (whomever) and try and get a few of the more not so fast ( not nec slow) up at the front to to help stop stringing the group out. There leader will have a couple of back up fast riders to help out at junctions. So that our other rider are not so quickly put to the back. This will be in place for the morning and we will review it as it may not work.
The only rule with the leaders are you don't overtake the first man or woman. If there are hassles let me know at the stops.

There's always someone faster on these things but the fastest guys also tend to have enough sense to stop if they trip over the leader. We're ahead of the game up here though with so few junctions etc so if it's an issue the leader can always go off a few minutes early with a few willing markers. (which also helps stop the get to front- mark a junction- chase back through the pack thing that sometimes happens on big rides)
I don't know the exact route down to the details but in previous years there's been whole sections that needed about 2 markers.
