View Full Version : New House!

phil24_7

Me and the wonderful Kate Moss have just purchased our first house together. We picked up the keys on Friday, and moved all our stuff in yesterday.

Now starts the mammoth task of cleaning up the old place, and the endless list of DIY tasks for the new house!

Now if I could compile a list of org plumbers, electricians, gardeners, builders, painters and decorators, carpet fitters, kitchen fitters and bathroom fitters, that are local-ish. That'd be swell!

Phil

P.S. Whoop, whoop!

Sign up to mybuilder.com - it's free, you put up a job i.e. "Complete electrical re-wire needed" and then electricians will get in contact to come round to quote. You can even view the feedback other people have given each tradesman (tradesperson?) so you get a feel for how good each one is. It saves a lot of bother of ringing round for quotes etc.

Congrats guys, i'm sure you'll have agreat time arguning about colour scheems and all those fun things ;)

I deign bathrooms and kitchens and the beatuy of that is that i dont even need to leave my place to do it, all you need to do is send me dimensions and a couple of pics and tell me what you like. I'll even find room in my heart to give you some kind of Org discount if you ask real nice like ;)

So whens the house warming? Surely before all the work begins so you dont have to worry about people messing up the place?

Congrats you guys. My best wishes to you both for a long and happy life together :-D

I still remember my first house (1991, £47k, 2 up, 2 down) more fondly that the other two we've had. So make sure you have some good memories to look back on

I deign bathrooms and kitchens

You do what? Are you qualified to deign things? City & Guilds in deigning or summat? ;-)

or forget to allow a blank unit for a dishwasher...or forget it needs a side panel to attach the door to if the model wont take an integrated door attachment.

Loads of things basically ;)

Need to get settled first, so probably not until the new year. There is an open invite to you and your family though for the excellent/cheap conveyancing you did for us!

woo hoo thats excellent news i bet Kate's headaches have gone now although i wonder of she will have a few more while the DIY gets done.

Headaches haven't gone, as there still so much to do. Only difference now is we have forever to sort them out!

Garage is second on my list of expensive things to do!

Grats, state of housing market didn't mess things up?

No.,, In fact, I think with this purchase (and subsequent building/DIY/landscaping costs), we are single handedly pulling this country out of the recession!

Erm, not really cos i design to YOUR spec you see. You want your bathroom in traditional styles ala victoriana or ultra modern where its all seamless glass and chrome you tell me and i work around that.
Kitchens are pretty much the same deal.

But sometimes its also just as easy to say "i got X to spend, what can you do for me?" and take it from there :)

What can you do for £300 then ;)

kitchen wise...sort out your worktops with the cheapest possible stuff. Or get you the tiniest ikea kitchen if your room is no bigger and 12sq ft that is ;)

Bathroom wise, get you a sink, taps and maybe even a complete toilet. All Bathstore quality of course.

however some of the biggest and best brands do have some good "budget" item, its just a question of what you want it to look like tbh.

I can do all electrical, im fully qualified, most roofing and ground works, but to hire me you have to pay for all my meals and somewhere to sleep, on top of my labour and materials (which you will have to collect). and i only use top grade materials no cheap rubbish.
and labour is cheaper because im still young.

Whenever you're ready Phil.

I'm currently helping a friend design her kitchen using the Ikea downloadable kitchen planner. Give it a try, its fairly easy to use. but whatever you do run it by me before you order it, there are some silly little things like fillers and junk that everyone gets wrong unless they know the drill.

Woo well done to the pair of you, but forget about the DIY, it's the Christmas decorations that have top priority! :-P How's the wee cat taken to the new place? :-)

phil24_7
08-12-09, 11:00 PM
The cat is slowly starting to find his feet. He's been totally scared for the past few days. He started to feel a little comfortable in the lounge after day 2, so we had to move his food in there to get him to eat. He has, just this evening, started to bounce around, a little more Milo like. So tomorrow, his food moves to it's permanent place in the kitchen!

Next week, he shall be let loose on the garden!

Gavin - Once I've sorted out a to-do list, I shall compile lists of stuff I can do, stuff I can do with a little help/advice and stuff I need to get someone else to do. I shall give you a call then!

phil24_7

No weed unfortunately, else I could sell it at the school across from the back garden!

The house is great, if decorated badly, and in garish colours. It's a little rough around the edges and will give me endless weekend of DIY and gardening!

First on the list is build a ramp so I can get the bikes into the cellar (it's not full height, but it'll do until the garage is built); then sort the damp out; then build the garage with a cellar underneath (connected to the house cellar); then dig out the cellar to full height, concrete the floor and board it out; then landscape the garden. This is all to run alongside the in-house DIY!

I don't think I'll be enjoying my bike much this year :(, every weekend is gonna be taken up with decorating, building or demolition works!

Progress report: The ramp has been dug and just needs to be concreted. The cellar has been dug out from about 5 ft, down to just over 2 metres. So this means that once the cellar is made water tight, a new door made, and the ramp concreted, the bikes can finally move in, The kitchen, bathroom and en-suite have all been spruced up with a coat of Dulux's finest. :D

It finally feels like OUR home now.

A builder was involved at various stages to oversee the project and the labourers had done various building work over the years. I wouldn't have been able to do it myself as it would have taken me a 6 months to a year!!

Looking good, I am in the midst of redecorating our own house having bought around the same time as you! :D

Unfortunately I am doing it all myself...I have just about finished the first bedroom, I reckoned it's taken me about 5x longer than it normally would have, due to 'real' work commitments

I'm going to do the next 2 rooms in parallel as there was a bit of waiting time involved at some points. Hoping it will go a fair bit quicker!

I'm also building a garage - I'd be interested to see/hear details of what you've got planned? On mine, we're an end-terrace and I'm building an integrated garage on to the end (all I've done so far is mock up some rough plans, need to formalise them though). I have a dream about being able to walk from the house into the garage in my PJs

Oi... All the decorating has been done by myself. It was only the cellar that has been done by hired help. Do your 'real' work commitments, require you to work away ALL week like me??? :D

Mine took a lot longer than it should, simply because the existing paint started falling off when I painted over it, and because one corner of the house has slight damp in the wall so the paint wouldn't dry!

I'm also planning on building a garage on the end of my house. I already have a door out to the side of the house, so this will form the access to it. I (now) have a cellar beneath the house, accessed from the side of the house, this will eventually have a staircase built to allow access from inside the house. The garage is going to have a garage under the rear half of it, that will connect onto the under house cellar, via the existing cellar entrance. There will then be a door at the rear of this to allow access to the garden (my house is built on a slope, meaning the front door is at street height, but the cellar is at ground height in the garden).

Haha oh I misunderstood then ;) apologies for implying you sat and watched :p

So you are gonna have 2 garages? Nice! I'd have definitely considered a bigger garage if I could, as it is it won't fit so it's just a regular size garage for me

I think I see why the difference in time taken to redecorate tho - did you just need to paint? Unfortunately I needed to do a bit more :( wallpaper to come off, filling and smoothing the bits of wall that needed it under there, sanding and filling the wooden skirting & inbuilt cupboard, lining paper and painting it all of course...and the biggest bit, hacking out half the door frame cos it was warped and fitting a new one - it brought a tear to my eye seeing the state the room was in after that, haha! I never expected to still be doing the first room now, but all I can do is crack on with it!

Oh yes, we're buying a house atm with an attached garage, the 'trek' to the garage will involve opening the door from the kitchen and then opening the door to the garage! :)

Plus its got storage space in the roof space of the garage! :)

Plan is then to build a big shed/bike store in the garden and have the garage more as a workshop.

Not 2 garages. Gonna build over the ramp to the cellar, and extend the cellar to under the garage. Effectively giving me a workshop underneath the whole rear part of my house and a garage on top.

I had to do the same as you when decorating, minus the paper side of things. It's amazing what horrors you find when you start rubbing things down and taking paint/trims off. Some of the wiring I've encountered whilst fitting new lights has also horrified me!

I've got it to a state that I'm comfortable with, and I shall wait a while, before I tackle the only other room that we don't like the colour off, as this one will need the wall ripping out and replacing! :(

Well, I know I said we were gonna wait a bit before doing any more decorating, but on our week off last week, we decided to tackle the hallway. Now it is a lovely shade of lime green!!! We just got the skirting to do in white to finish the hall etc off.
