So there we were watching Mama Mia a short while ago. I was fed up of squinting at the box and I said to wifey, 'we need a bigger TV.'

She said 'Mmmmm. Just , how we gonna pay for it.'

I suddenly remembered. 'Oh on the never never'

And we both fell around laughing.

Wondering - how many remember it?

Yep we had our telly from Granada. Do you remember, a valve blowing was bad enough, but everyone was petrified of 'the tube going':D:D:D

The 'never never' was credit. It was shameful to admit to having anything on hire purchase, or 'on tick', or being 'in the red'. My dad used to be scathing about being in debt - funny, I wonder what he'd think now.

Never thought I would have friends who were 44, let alone a partner of that age. When did I become grown up? ;-)

Renting a colour TV... I remember going with me Dad when he rented a huge 22" b&w in 1962. We moved house then to a detached one with a drive for the Ford Anglia. And to soften the blow of moving, they bought me my first Border Collie, also in black and white.

Fish and chips for less than a shilling. Tea, not in tea bags.

We must have been posh as we owned our TV, but it seemed like every other week the repair man would have the back off to change a valve.

Big bakelite knob you turned with a resounding thud as you changed channel between BBC and commercial TV. nice watching how long the white spot stopped in the centre lasted once you had turned it off.

As for saying of that era. It's frothy man from the bear advertising pop. But that must have been a sneaky day when mum was out of the room as we were not allowed to watch commercial TV.

As Jo likes to point out, I have the vocabulary of someone easily twice my age (when we first started going out I took great joy in using phrases that couldn't be literally translated, and were well out of their time to annoy her). "The never never" is a wonderful phrase that I'd forgotten, and shall now resurrect in general conversation, thanks Ed!

Omo for us.

Lets get 60s controversial then. Gollywogs on jam. Black & white minstrel show. Couldn't be coloured tv for that show.

My own hate from that era, having to wear a school cap, matching blazer etc. But even worse regulation socks with two green bands. I suppose I was lucky as my sister had to wear a green hat in winter, a straw boater in summer and also had regulation knickers.

Blimey!! I remember all this and more...

Spangles, Texan bars and Hickory House. Begging to stay up late on saturday night to watch Match of the Day but not being allowed, then having to watch The Match on ITV on Sunday after lunch. Then it was teatime, followed by bath night and settle down in front of the telly (B+W, colour was for rich people!!) to watch Planet of the Apes, Hart to Hart or Return of the Saint.

Happy days, happy times...

I remember our first TV , you selected channels with a rotary Dial which made a clunk sound like Frankensteins Monster coming down the wooden stairs , if the station was slightly off then there was another dial around the outside of that to fine tune it . It also had a sideways closing roller-shutter door to cover the screen when not in use ........ and the biggest shame of all , it had a meter on the back that you dropped 50p pieces into and turned a dial to restore power to the set . I seem to remember it being a "Baird" TV .

It broke one day and the repair guy came around to fix it , he left the back open and I came along (aged about 5) and looked inside and decided to "Help" him repair it by ragging a screwdriver around inside the circuit boards . he came back and tried some tweaks here and there and then said "I`ll have to send it back and organise a replacement for you , I can`t figure out what is wrong with it" . He drags this thing out to the van and drives off , an hour later he is back with another TV and leaves . Dad pulled the roller-shutter door to one side and then pointed at something underneath where the dial should be ........................... it had BUTTONS , oh my God (apparently) and some significant logo that had mum and dad almost wetting themselves on the spot . I stared at the 3 little squares that were coloured Red/Green/Blue and thought "Big Deal , so it has a little picture on it ?" . They pressed the button and "Crossroads" came on ............... IN COLOUR ....... I never forget them holding each others hands , spinning around in circles and jumping up and down at the same time doing lots of "Wooohooo" and "Yipeee" type noises . I just plonked myself in front of it and continued to do the same thing I have done for the last 34 years ... watch TV in colour .

I also remember Vim Scouring Powder , Milk having a cream line at the top of the bottle , women with curlers in their hair chatting on doorsteps , the Rain Lamp (nasty statue of a woman with strands around her that had oil running down them like rain) , hairdryers that had hoses on them that ended with a bag you put on your head , My battery powered Snoopy toothbrush and worst of all , most stuff seemed to be made from Orange Plastic .

I will NEVER watch "Mama Mia" on principle alone , I got SO sick of seeing adverts , and seeing them clutching oscars , and DVD`s on display and and and , stuff . I just shudder when I hear that name . Same goes for Slumdog Millionaire , I have no desire to watch it after getting it crammed down my neck , out of my bottom , scooped back up again , and crammed down for a second time .

Coop divi number that we used when we were sent down the coop to buy
- Milk Tokens
- 10 Park drive for Dad
- 10 No 6 for mum

Then pop into "Home and Colonial" for quarter pound of Quick Brew.
The Quick Brew went in a red plastic dispencer that was screwed to the wall above the copper. TV was abut 12 inch square screen in a massive Walnut cabinet.
When that new fangled BBC2 came along the old tele was replaced with one where you had operate a great clunky button to go from 405 to 625 lines.

Oh yes the sofa was a monster in green leatherett that folded out into a double bed and was a comfortable as sitting on nails.

No note needed, a newsagent in Chorley used to sell us 5 cigs, 5 matches on the way to school of a morning, robbing git made about 20% on splitting a box of 20. Why did none of us at the time think to pool our funds and buy a box .

I remember in 64 going to the local pub, to buy some Guiness for my mum. Miserable old git would not serve me and also accused me of nicking his empties from round the back for the deposit money. Now theres an idea for an enterprising young chap thought I, as I went up the road to the next pub to get mums Guiness.

That sounds like an afternoon round my Gran's in the noughties mate! She had to move in to a home a couple of years ago but up until then she still religiously used her scouring powder, still had her hairdryer with the bowl she put over her head, still had lots of orange plastic 'tupperware' stuff etc. She used to buy meat joints and turn it in to mince with a grinder at the table.

I think a lot of old people still live like that cos they like it - why change?!

What was funny was when the BBC started saying 'press the red button' for the extras - my Gran and Grandad's TV wasn't too new, their remote didn't have a red button, so they blu-tacked an old red button to the front of the TV; everytime they said to press it my Grandad got out of his chair giggling! :brilsmurf:

I was SO glad when the Morris Minor died and my dad bought a 2.8 Mk2 Granada from a mate of his. It drank so much fuel that they soon had a dozen of every glass Esso had in their collection. They're still in use today and they've still got loads of spares in a box in the loft!!

Pure Gold

Twin tubs.

I did my apprenticeship at Hotpoint and the L3 twintub was only discontinued in the very early 90`s . We had one that had an electric Mangle on the top , it was triggered by offering up an item of soggy clothing . Once the rollers were parted the switch was triggered and they squeezed the water out of the item . I heard screams from the back of the house one day and had to free my sisters fingers from the Mangle . Needless to say my Father took a dislike to the offending finger squeezer and disposed of it .

Aye Aye - must have been reigonal as we had a few of them :D - the Tiger was short where we lived. Still got the Texaco army badge collection somewhere though.

We called it on the knock - or HP ...

here's a few more

Black and white telly where you had to turn a dial to change channel ( and rented from Radio rentals, and yes, regular trips from the repair man to fix it ) - Ed Stewart on Saturday with Junior Choice on the radio - the invention of the cassette ( remember that one ) and the CD come to think of it - sixpences in the Christmas pudding - Christmas decorations that were made of crepe paper that twisted as you strung from corner to corner in the room - getting your first telephone in the house - with a round dial with finger holes in - Tiswas and Swop shop on a Saturday morning - getting the cane at school - respecting your elders - Central heating, yes, remember that - all the floorboards in the house came up and I never had to suffer ice on the inside of the bedroom window in the winter ... Electric showers - front loading washing machines ...the microwave ... the Computer ( Spectrum or BBC Electron ) 5 1/2" floppy discs !!

When I think about it, I'm only 46 but I have seen quite a few new things in my time - but I wonder what my kids will remember ?
