View Full Version : Found a kidney!
Bit personal this, so feel free to ignore ...
I've been poorly for a while now, with nasty pains and stuff in the abdomen and other things like first asthma attack.
I've had test after test, painkillers and that look, which says 'silly middle aged hypochondriac'. Last doctor said that if the pain was still there in 10 weeks they'd send me to the pain clinic but would also book me in for a scan, which would take 4-6 weeks.
Well, I'd had enough of it all so booked into me local private hospital for the scan - if only to give me peace of mind that I didn't have gallstones, cancer or ulcers.
I went this morning. Very nice, clean and quick. I explained to the nice doctor that I only had one kidney - a congenital condition diagnosed 28 years ago after suffering chronic kidney infections when I was pregnant. Dye based tests, verified by a teaching hopsital using me as an example, confirmed I only had the one.
This very nice doctor this morning found two kidneys - good size and fully functioning!
Bad news is I have ACNE - abdominal cutaneous nerve entrapement. They're trying some nerve ending drug but if that doesn't work I may need large injections into my somach muscles.
Funny old day really

Sounds like a long and odd day, hope the drugs work and large injections aren't needed.

Good luck Messie, although good news to have two working kidneys. Chronic pain is something I understand, feel free to drop me a mail if you want to have a chat Honey.
Hope that you feel much better very soon.

Wow, how wierd does it feel to know you have another kidney after all these years thinking you had only one?
Did it grow by itself over the years or just misdiagnosed to begin with, do you know?
Either way sweetie i totally sympathise, as you know i had that kidney stone a couple years ago so i know how painful it can be.
Hope those drugs work for you
hurrah for the kidney! you do know how much they're worth on the black market, don't you? ;)
sorry to hear about the real problem though - is it just nerves, so "fake" pain (i know it hurts just as much) or is it there something causing it?
Lol the doctor was a bit surprised when I said that it hadn't really been a problem only having one. Most people have some, if minor problems.
Now I know all major organs are fine - if more numerous than I thought - some of the anxiety has gone. I'll try to be stoical (or resort to alcohol)
I think 'trapped nerves' pretty much sums it up, rather than 'in my head' lol
Spidey - I asked whether I had grown it over the years, which amused doc greatly, as it's just not possible. She suggested I could've had a kidney stone formed while pregnant, which caused the pain and infection. Then when I had the tests after laura was born it was still blocked and so looked like no kidney. She also said scaning techniques were not very sophisticated then!

Ah i see now. Funny cos all the docs kept telling me that having a kidney stone was as painful as childbirth...you just had them both at the same time...i wonder if you had double the pain or half as much as having them at seperate times.
Be cool if you'd grown it, as Ophic says you'd be worth a lot of money. A new type of golden goose if you will, lol.
Just a shame it put me off having another child.
Oh well

Blimey! I know some people want two front teeth for christmas, but that's pushing the boat out!
Anyway, kidney-area pins are horribly hurty, so hope you feel much better very soon. xxxx

Lucky you, I went to the doctor last week with a pain in the leg and left with some rat poison and a DVT for my trouble.
Dan
Sal, sorry to hear of all your pains and have I / haven't I kidney dilemmas! Hope you feel better very soon.

Wow, well congratulations on your extra kidney Messie! Clearly someone was having a bad day at the office...
On a serious note though, hope the drugs work to manage your condition and you're feeling better soon

It was the pied piper, in case the poison didn't work.
And I already have some sexy stockings, thanks anyway Caz.
Messie - Hope you get fixed soon!

Try the alcohol route...... two kidneys can handle it better ;-)
Hope the pain goes ASAP.

Hey Messie, sorry to hear you've been feeling poorly. Has the doc offered any form of anti-depressant for the pain management? Up until I had a few cortisone injections in my back last year I was also undergoing pain management and the anti-depressents did help. Initially I was a bit reluctant to try them as didn't think I was depressed, but they apparently help your body to cope better, especially with nerve based pain.
The worse thing about the whole treatment for me wasn't the injections, it was being stuck in a tube for 30 minutes while they did the MRI scan. Not because I'm claustrohphic but because they blasted me with the most terrible local radio station complete with Alan Partidge style DJ. I nearly had to hit the emergency button to get me out, so avoid the private clinic at Springfield!
You've been used to thinking of yourself with one, just sell the newly rediscovered one ;)
But in all honesty, it sounds horrible. I very much hope you're feeling better soon :)

Best of luck and as you`ve not missed it really maybe you could sell the other kidney? only kidding :p Hope you feel better soon and I`ll second the anti depressants for chronic pain conditions....... they work extremely well as they basically reduce/block pain signals to the brain.
Thank you nice org people for your good wishes.
I'm surprised and actually very reassured to hear about anti-depressants being used for nerve pain. I have been given some, although a very low dose, and have been a bit dubious about taking them. I wondered whether the doc secretly thought I was just despressed! I shall take them more happily now.
And yes, I had thought about selling the spare, lol, but I've always had a sad little thought that if my daughter needed one to save her life I wouldn't be able to help her. Now I know I can (but I really, really hope she never gets in that position)
And KitKat - NO! No! No! LOL

I found a kidney today too!
Which was strange because it should have been a Steak and Mushroom pie! ;)
Seriously though, I hope all your pain goes soon and you're back to 100%.

Having double the quantity of functional kidneys you believed you owned I hope you can get to the bottom of the pain and return to a pain free existance. Good luck.
