I'd like to see Cavendish win it, but cycling is such a minority sport, I doubt it very much, my monies on Button.

+1, not a Man Utd fan (in fact actually City), but the ultimate professional, never in the papers for the wrong reasons and appears to be very down to earth. Well deserved.
thats a joke right?
great professional, great player, but im sorry not a worthy winner, not in the company he was in

That's the public vote for you though, United have a massive fanbase and football is the biggest sport in the UK. I think deserved anyway as per my earlier post.

very true, but cycling still is a minority sport in this country. Especially road cycling, what Cavendish did in the TdF this year was an awesome achievement IMHO.

And Wiggins for that matter, but he didn't even make the top 10 did he?

Yep I tend to agree, Wiggo's 4th was my highlight of the TDF as an idividual effort, but splitting the two of them is very hard
Although don't forget Cav won Milan - San Remo too, which in it's self was brilliant
But it's still a minority sport.
Cav will have his chance again

winner:thumbsup:
Cav or Button should have won. The story behind Button's season should have won it for him, almost being out of a job and then managing to take the title. Giggsy's achievement shouldn't have gone unnoticed but of the Year? No, he should have taken some special achievement award.
Cricketers as Team of the Year? Sorry, but that should have been Brawn GP.
As for the winner, I'd have voted for Jessica Ennis.
No probs with Giggsy winning it for all the reasons given earlier, but it feels more like a "Lifetime Achievement Award" that for anything particularly outstanding he's done. This year is no different to any other for him - Mr Consistency.
Also, really good to see Sevy. Now there's a personality, eh Tiger? ;-)

Couldn't agree more mate. Hit the ball as hard as you can and keep smiling. :)
Shame they gave two Lifetime Achievment awards though, no way did Giggs deserve to be overall winner.

Yep, have to agree with the posts about Gigg'sy. I can't think he's done anything particularly special THIS year, unlike Cav or Wiggo or any of the other listed.
I can't say he's got much of of a personality either, although he seems like a nice bloke. What about Paul Scoles?
They should have given him a lifetime achievement award.
As for the cricketers being team of the year? Ok so they won the Ashes back, but apart from those 4 games, they've been pretty average.
I agree with Brawn being team of the year
Well Oiled

I agree with most - Giggs is a true sporting hero but not "of the year". I thought Brawn and Button should have got a double as team / personality of the year. It's like a bankrupt football team at the bottom of the table coming out of administration and winning the premiership, with Button scoring 35 goals in the season.

How did Giggs make it through to the final 10 then if he hasnt done anything out of the ordinary ( for him anyway ) this year.
Seems like the problem here isnt the actual vote... but the people who were being voted for ?

Seems like they have some kind of secret proceedure for selecting the personalities.
The cynic in me thinks that its to raise the profile of football, as its taking a battering from the cyclists, boxers & gymnasts.
The core sports of the BBC aren't what they used to be

The Sports Personality Of The Year award has absolutely nothing to do with personality.
Surely it should be renamed Sports Achiever Of The Year.

I would give it to big frank every year. !
what a farce- again.
read main page yahoo now they have a good discussion on why it was Giggs - or rather why it shouldnt have been

Agree, which is why Button deserved it. They got it right last year with the cyclists, but how are any of the non main stream sports going to compete with Man U's large fan base, which is why I think Giggs got it, when it comes to a public telephone vote.
Its rigged in his favour from the start :nomore:

Lots of sports have the "c'mon, let's vote for our guy" bandwagons. The cycling mags did it this year with Wiggins and Cavendish. Cavendish made it into the top 10 even though he didn't actually win the TdF.
Minority sports do well each year because of the bandwagons..... Sara Phillips, Barry McGuigan, Sir Chris Hoy, Nigel Mansell (who won even when he wasn't world champ), Damon Hill, Sir Steve Redgrave (my personal sporting hero), etc.
Not that many footballers have won depite it being a majority sport and on the telly every week.

Cav got into the top 10 by achieving what no other Brit cyclist has done, and he beat Barry Hobans stage victories record. Plus he also won Milan - San Remo.
So he got in on merit. As did the others who won their respective titles or medals
But the trouble with the footballers is that they haven't won that much recently, so they don't get into the final vote.
