View Full Version : MCN's screwed up somewhere again... (1000CC test)

Right then... The MCN test our this weak, the 4 Jap bikes vs the BMW S1000RR.
The problem? Power, basically MCN have tested them on a Dyno (apparently) and the lines and numbers they have come out with are interesting to me, but not in the usual "wooo thats nice aint it" kind of way, its in the "how the hell can that work?" kind of way.
Right then, people might know that the Torque (ft-lb) and Power (BHP) are directly related and you can convert torque at a certain RPM to BHP at that same RPM simply by doing torque x RPM / 5252=bhp and bhp/rpm x 5252 = torque.
So from that you will know that if two completely different bikes have the same torque at the same RPM they will have the same power. and visa versa.
Now look at this picture:
http://forums.sv650.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=5831&d=1261012247
What looks off to you? Well either the power line for the BMW is way off or the torque line is. Why? Well as above, if the BMW has a power line above the other bikes, its torque line should be also... is it? Nope. So, which one is wrong? Id guess power line, and that the torque is pretty much bang on. Which means that if the torque at 11,800rpm (where the power graph says peak power is) is about 72ft-lb (hard to tell with scale of graph) the power will be 75*11,800 / 5252 = 162BHP.
So what if the power line is right? Well 183 / 11800 x 5252 = 81.45 ft-lb at 11,800 RPM, now that is pretty unlikely imo, a Desmo RR Motogp replica dont even make that at that sort of RPM!
So what do you think? How on earth did this get past them at MCN (he he)?
cheers for reading.

looks like BMW slipped them a tenner to make it the most powerful bike on test :D

Indeed, and MCN are thick enough to overlook the Torque not being right...

I do to, unfortunalty BIKE, RIDE & MCN are written and published by the same people.
So dont belive all you read in the mags.

I don't get it the Kawasaki has the most power but the BMW is way above it?

Thats what I see. the kwak apparently has 185 bhp, yet its line on the power output is similar to the other 3 jap bikes.
MCN's handling of the data is both crappy and false

The Suzuki and Kawa do look like 180+ but its just the way the photo has shown up on here...actually 160+ in print.
Not the 1st or the last time the press balls these things up. That power curve would make you think the beemer had a much bigger capacity.
:^o:^o:^o
Actually a lovely looking bike in the flesh. Saw a puke green one in the shops with a shorty Akra. Would still have the r1 purely for the way the thing sounds at all revs.
TheGreek you are a nerd of the highest order!:D Quite the Roger Cook. Go kick down some doors!

A mistake in MCN? No way! I'm mildly surprised they don't all make 1,000,000+BHP and corner on rails

Oh, they do, they are the dogs danglies
until the next updated bikes come along, then this years superfantastic bikes become heavy, slow, cant hold a line, crap brakes, need revving at 20,000,000 rpm to be on par with the latest greatest
The graphs don't correlate with one another at all, it's not just the BMW. According to that, the R1 and CBR both continue to make close to peak power at 12k rpm even though the torque has dropped to nought by then.
It's like the two charts were made from two lots of very different dyno runs, or two seperate people guessed them. (Or one incredibly dumb person).

Actually I have noticed something else... A few of the bikes that in the power graph rev to 13000+rpm, yet on the Torque one they rev to under 12000rpm. ha ha. sigh.
No doubt we'll get the weekend warriors all going round on the BMW saying "mines got way more power", then pulling this report out... :D

Ah sorry didnt notice that you beat me to that.
Indeed, the graphs looks pretty screwed. I read the 2009 summery part of this weeks paper and it seems that there was someone who dyno'd a BMW and got this power output from it then MCN said he said it had 200bhp at the crank... like they can test that. Sigh. For all we know my old SV might have had 300bhp at the crank and lost 230bhp of it to the wheel :p
So yea, one big ball dropped :smt105

so perhaps we should send a link to this thread to the editor of MCN?
maybe he can get someone to explain whats gone wrong in the Mathematics and Statistics deparment at MCN Towers
