View Full Version : Would you buy tomorrow?
Been after switching to a new bike for ages now but held back as i basically couldn't decide what to go for, sportsbike, tourer or dig out my peep-hole leather chaps and get a cruiser.
After checking out a billion bikes and getting a taster on track (and finding out i want to do much more track stuff) the one i've finally plumped for is the GSX-R 750.
Spent the last couple of weeks finding the best deal and am all set tomorrow to go and sign for a brand spanking 0 mile Gixxer.
People keep telling though that i'm nuts to buy at this time of year and why not wait until March ang get a 10 reg.
Pros: This bike will be a keeper so the reg doesn't bother me that much, not much difference between the K9/K10 bike that i'm aware of? Getting a good deal as the VAT saving applies to this bike so in March i'd be paying substantially more for the same bike. If i buy the bike now, i get the bike now :D Will be a nice Xmas gift from me to me.
Cons: Rubbish weather, am i going to get much riding time in before March? Its Blue/White (i'd fancied black but the blue/white has grown on me and it the 'proper' Gixxer colour so not much of a minus point - looks lovely) Not many new Gixxer 750's left in the UK now and Suzuki are not going to have any more till March.
Does anyone reckon i'm stupid for buying now? Or would you sign tomorrow?

I did last year. Picked up a new Sprint on 28/12/08.
Got £1k off the price, and all the extras I asked for.
Glad I did as the 09 Sprints sold out (aparently) soon after the weather got warmer.
It was, however, the coldest I've ever been on a bike, and a complete waste of time polishing the SV for PX as the salty roads made it look very 2nd hand.
Lucky the salt/roads mostly dried out for the ride home!

I'll be wrapping the thing in cling-film for the ride home! :D
What you say about the things selling out though is another point - come March lots of people will be after a new-un and i guess the 'stock level/price hike/no decent deals' will reflect that.
Get ya asse down there and Sign. you never know what waits around the corner and it you cant turn back time.

If you're getting a great deal (and the bike is not due to change this year) then i would also go for it but the only saving you mention is the VAT which is not really that fantastic (<£200 if I've done my sums right). When I bought my SV (way back in 2001) I got it for £4000 when list was about £5400 IIRC, I had a 2000 model rather than 2001 (which I actually prefered - Black wheels), I also managed to get it registered in March 2001 on a Y and the dealer didn't deliver it until end of Feb so I didn't have to keep going to my garage to look at it! I don't think this will work in your case as it probably needs to be registered now to qualify for the VAT.
I've bought most of my bikes either late or early in the year due to prices being better. This doesn't work out quite as good if you are also off-loading a bike as the price will be down on that. And if you are buying from a dealer the want the advantage to them on both deals. I bought my current bike in in January this year, it was second hand, 4 months old 1200 mls. I saved about £1600 on the original price BUT the guy had put about £800 worth of extras on. Just a couple of weeks later Honda hiked the price £1000 followed by further rises during the year.
One problem with this is supply seems to dry up this time of year, I'm still looking for an SV1000 but very few for sale at the moment.
So in short (sorry I've gone on a bit), I don't have a problem buying a bike this time of year IF I'm getting a good deal and that should be the case on a 2009 bike, let's face it the only reason that is still on the showroom floor is because no-one bought it during the time it was intended for sale.
I bought my SV in December, the 2nd to be precise. I still have it to this day. However, if i had the cash i would be going down to the local triumph dealer and getting a brand spanking new Tiger SE

No buy it now, you'll get a much better deal now than you will in march...

Buy it now and eat Christmas dinner off of it.
Was a bit worried when I was reading you didn't seem to have a clue even what type of bike you wanted  but if that's all sorted & you're happy you're getting the best deal - I would go ahead & buy now :)
As said the VAT is not the biggest difference but surely the deal should be good. So how much you paying? :D
So how much you paying?
Ah, thats to be wrestled over tomorrow. Direct bikes quoted me £7849 and the dealer is aware of this so said we'll come to an arrangement tomorrow. 2 dealers have told me the RRP on the 750 is going to be near 9K in 2010.
Been offered 1700 for my K3 pointy as PX.
so basically depends on how much i can batter that down tomorrow. :smt062

This one will be kept in an air-tight bubble in the lounge and only exposed to the atmosphere once a year on my birthday when i get it out to stroke.
I'm hoping the Gixxer is not made of cream cheese and special rust-o-matic metal like my SV.
it'll be my daily commuter so will look well loved in no time!
PS - cheers for the comments folks, all positive, a lot of people i've spoke to have been negative up to now.

good call. My girlfriend has a K6 gixxer and lets put it this way its not held up to the rain and weather to well. compared to other makes, best to cover it in ACF-50.

Buy it now, they are lovely bikes and I much prefer them to the 600 or 1000.
You'll get a better deal, you'll have it now and you can ride it carefully on the better days over the season and get used to it slowly so you're not out on a new bike in the summer, wanting to have fun without knowing it very well....if that makes sense.
Post pics when you get it home :-)

I'd also say buy now. For the above reasons. Also, any improvement in next years model would probably be small and perhaps unnoticeable unless you live on the edge.

buying a bike is a bit like buying a convertible car....everyone wants one in summer and no one can sell one in winter, be smart and buy in winter i say.

I just bought a new bike.
Do it! :D
Oh and, this was my deal...
0% finance. suzuki SV650s (fully faired) including;
Datatool S4 alarm
Datatag
Rear hugger (genuine suzuki)
led indies front + back + relay
R&G tail tidy
R&G crash bungs
Alpinestars rainsuit
Suzuki fleece
Lanyard
Some difference bar ends
Scorpion Street Extreme can (mhmm yum)
All for £5426 (bike retails for £5221) and I know you can get them on their own for cheaper, but that is all inclusive of fitting and 1 years tax, first service free (the 600 mile one)
Oh yeah :D

Good analogy. Will use that against those who seek to dissuade me!

Most importantly though - what colour?
Was this like one of the George White deals? I'd seen those advertised but they no longer do them on the Gixxer.
Stuff like the alarm, can, tail tidy and bungs are certainly handy and realistically you'd shell out for them soon after getting the bike anyway so looks like a good deal.

No this was from alpha motorcycles.
Haggle with dealers, if they won't cut you a deal, go somewhere that will.
You can play them against eachother too, eg if you want to buy from a shop, tell them the deal you have, but how you'd much rather buy from them.
More often than not, a week before christmas, coming up, to end of annual year figures - they will want to sell another bike.
Clear '09 stock, more money for them, soo many reasons.
Infact just to add, I walked into the shop and said this is what I want (read list above) and this bike, this colour, and I want to pay £5200 for it. I couldn't really complain with £5426 for the lot.
And its blue the candy blue with white stripe.

i hope you do it, ive has mine nearly 3months now. im so glad i did do it. there is no difference between the newest bike other than colours.
mines tucked away in the garage now for the winter.
whats with the hatred of the toothpaste colours? its only cos you dont have one!! :D
(ps i wanted black but they onlu had the traditional colour left, i got them to reflect this in the price. :smt041) you grow to love it, i look at the black now and it hides so much of the detail.

nowt wrong with blue & white !!!!!
I bought it :D :D :D
Will post pics of it sat immobile in the snow when it arrives next week!
Insurance was a BIG shock - i hadn't bothered with a quote as i'm older and only pay 110 fully comp on the SV so assumed the Gixxer 750 would be around 300ish.
First quote was 900!!! Managed to get it for 600 fully comp and had to accept as needed a cover note so they could tax it. Going to shop around and cancel that though once its taxed as sure it shouldn't be that much.

As with everything in life.....its all lies till you post the pics ;)
Here's the beast sat having its alarm fitted out back. Sorry, rubbish pic as my iPhone, whilst doing everything else well, seems unable to take a photo that doesn't look like i've drawn it myself with crayons.
Will post proper piccies once i've got it.

Re-did my insurance today and got it lower.
Binned Bennetts as i needed the cert fast to register the bike and they were no help at all.
Me: Hi, i'm at the dealers and got a problem that i need the insurance details now so they can register the bike
Girl: Sigh, ok
Me: Can you email me the policy?
Girl: No, we wont do that
Me: Can you send the policy by next day post?
Girl: No, we wont do that
Me: Can you at least let me know when it'll be there
Girl: Haven't a clue. Is there anything else i can help you with today?
Cancelled and went with with Carole Nash and they were great on the phone and had the policy mailed over to me straight away. Sorted.

Bennetts, bad man !! i got such a sweet deal at carole nash, knocked 150 quid off the web quote.
shame i just saw this thread, you could've had my 58 plate gixer :(
Yeah, spoke to 3 people at Bennetts when sorting my original insurance, all were really surly and just gave the impression they were filing their nails at the same time and just waiting to clock off.
People i spoke to at Carole Nash were really friendly and helpful (and cheaper which is the main thing!).
So how come you are selling an '08 bike so soon?

So how come you are selling an '08 bike so soon?
3 reasons.
I've discovered trackdays ! and have a trackbike as well.
i'm terrified of getting caught speeding (i do get carried away, hence liking trackdays)
Am scared of crashing, had one mega crash (17 years ago tomorrow), which ended up with 6 operations and 4 months of hospital and also Hovis going is still preying on my mind if i get on the bike.
