Anyone looking for a LAMP/perl/PHP webmonkey for hire in the London area?

Nothing more to say, company says they cant afford to keep me, so off into the cold I go a week before Christmas...

More details to follow - gotta go catch a plane to Spearieland...

Thanks folks.

Funny thing is I had decided I wanted out of there and updated my CV about an hour before I got the email last Thursday. Already have 2 agencies sniffing round with 2 possible interviews.

Good thing is that I dont have to work my notice so am available immediately.

Sorry to hear that, mate. Getting made redundant really sucks, but hopefully they've given you some redundancy cash to drink away over xmas.

Hope that you find something soon. Have you looked to see if there are any positions open at Apple?

Seriously, if I was made redundant now, I'd be looking to set up my own business, even if it wasn't in IT.

but it shows your dad has the right attitude though - I'm a legal secretary but when I couldnt find work (it was right after 9/11 and no one was hiring temps) I applied for work at McD's, anywhere I could think of. Low wages is better than none and staying "in work" I think keeps you ready for opportunities :)

This is so true, I left a well paid school job under duress and ended up in Halfords selling bikes and earning minimum wage. However, it got me out of the house and back onto my feet so I could feel independent again. As it is, I have been promoted and want to go for more promotions when the opportunity presents itself.

Good luck both of you and stay positive. Things are tough at the mo, but there is always hope and kitties! :smt041

Dave, very sorry to hear this news mate.

As Saeed says, take some time to relax over Crimble and New Year, perfect your CV and predict the interview questions.

I honestly think things are going to pick up in the New Year, certainly by February-March. Particularly in IT, so much has been put off for a year or more now, and businesses are getting desperate to progress.

Quick update on this, 2 months on...

Well 16th Dec was my last days work, although with notice periods etc I have technically only been out of work for 2 and a half weeks.

So,given that my new job starts on Monday, I dont think that 3 weeks unemloyment in this economic climate is that bad really...

Yep, I got me a new job, in Haselmere (which I actually was interviewed for a month ago and didnt get it - looks like the guy that did wasnt that good)

So I now have a 45 mile each way commute ahead of me, so I think I may get the SV out of retirement and put the miles on that instead of the Zed.

So Soulkiss is hereby uncrunched :)

Thanks Tim (and everyone else).

Yeah it isn't the best of times to be looking - I was responding to between 4 and 10 ads on Jobserve a DAY and rarely getting anywhere.

The job I got was due to the guy thats employing me seeing my CV on there, or Monster of PlanetRecruit and contacting me, so all I can recommend is that you get your CV out there in as many places as possible, sign up for as many things like Jobserve as you can find and check them EVERY day.

Yeah, I got lucky, but I do believe to a large extent that you make your own luck.

Bit of a resurrection going on here but...

Saturday just gone was the anniversary of me being made redundant.

In the year since, I have found another job, travelled 500miles/week to get to it, lost that job due to credit crunching again, spent most of the summer unemployed, got another job, which has turned out to be a great place to work.

Work-wise I am happier now than I was this time last year - well I suppose that I should say 13 months ago for fairness.

Just thought I would put this up after reading a comment on the Xmas do thread about people not liking their jobs or the people they work with.

For those unhappy with where they are working, look around, for those and those who have found themself unemployed/redundant, there ARE jobs out there, and with a bit of luck, maybe some of those on here could find themselves happier in a years time too.

G
20-12-10, 02:38 PM
Glad it going ok for you now, I echo what your saying though, if you hate your job then look, and look hard.

It took me over a year of looking to find a job I actually enjoy. In that time I took a job which was worse than the original job I had, it's been a crazy year.

Enjoyment and happiness is the most important thing in life. I was quite ready to go work for the RSPCA earning minimum wage if the opportunity presented itself... as I would have at least loved it.

Swin
20-12-10, 03:42 PM
I am one of the guilty party who put on the xmas do thread that I don't like the people I work with, but in my case, the shift I lead are an excellent bunch of lads and we socialise regularly - with us it's the day working management that we don't want to spend time with :)

Glad you are in a good job tho SK

That's a really nice post David:D

I'm so hoping to get an IV for a job I really want. It's down south. Closing date was Friday, IVs are to be held this week, to start on site 4 Jan. I'm sat here on tenterhooks waiting for the phone to ring. It would be 7 months guaranteed work. Come on phone, ring damn you:evil:

Yup know the feeling I applied for a job got an email back saying over 200 people had applied for it and would be writing back later this week to say how would be short listed, so more waiting...
