Hmmmmm, suitably out of focus to preclude any clues, I presume it's just snapped, and good clear image of both ends would help and some history.
Cheers Mark.
I was glad when mine snapped when pulling off..not too much damage to the engine casing. Wouldve been worse tearing down the a13.

In this weather, you may have been actually doing 5mph, but the wheel could have been spinning at 100 :p
Tight spot on chain.... Plus wear and tear.... How many miles the chain done? Any who I take my hat off to you for riding in this weather :) mines tucked up for winter....
ive only had one chain snap on me in 26 years..that was about 3 years ago..doing 140 on my tl1000s.....luckily for me it did no other damage, apparently it flew outta the back of the bike and landed 200 yards away in a field just missing a bloke walking his dog:smt016.....lol he picked it up( was red hot) and brought it back to me...

It's more likely to snap at that speed, actually pulling away probably strains it a lot more than when everything is nicely moveing.

Have you adjusted the ride height recently?
Have you adjusted the ride height recently?
Nope.
Chain's done just shy of 8000 miles. It wasn't particularly well looked after between November last year and when I had the bike dropped off in October-time (also did basically zero mileage), but it's been cleaned, lubed and adjusted to be lovely again since. Looking at the edges of the pin it's just snapped through. Just glad it happened while travelling so slowly. Though it was an absolute ball-ache to get the bike the 200 metres back into the garage across the sheet-ice that covers my estate :D Had to use an improvised pulley to get it up the kerb because there just wasn't enough traction to push it hard enough without assistance.
Luckily my local bike shop are absolute god-sends, and they've actually dropped a new chain off through my letter-box, so I'll be back riding tonight. Which is handy, since I don't have a car, and wouldn't have had a Christmas otherwise :)

Lol, thats what i thought. Watched a lass trying to get her motor out of a side road today and her technique was to floor it and hope the tyres gripped while she was wheel spinning madly. Kept mouthing '2nd gear love, 2nd gear' but no joy.
To the OP though, yes you were lucky, that happening at 70 on a dual carriageway doesn't bear thinking about.

My chain snapped on the M20 at 90mph once. It really wasn't much fun.

Technique for getting the CBR out involves 1st gear, zero throttle and clutch control. Never gets above 2000rpm (as it's on fast-idle until I get out of my estate) ;)
Works like a charm, but I can't wait to get the SV back up and running so that I can just put both feet flat on the floor and still have room to stand up.

Seriously. You have no idea what my luck's been like for the last 3 months. I've started laughing about it, because otherwise I'd have just skipped the crying part and gone straight to topping myself ;)

Would it not be wise to fit new sprockets too? My concern would be wear to current sprockets after 8000 miles and them not lining up with a new chain. I come at this as a push bike mechanic and know that fitting a new chain to old cassettes will cause the chain to skip and jump and in some cases snap again. My girlfriend is a motorcycle mechanic and says that she agrees. ;)
Ride safe on that snow and ice up there, legs do heal, but they are never the same. :smt101
Have a better one in 2010. :thumleft:
Having to wait on a chain at the moment, but it needs new sprockets anyway. This is Dissuade's CBR, btw. Unfortunately I needed a bike to run with, so I had the damaged links removed and have fitted a temporary spring-clip link. I *should* have the SV back up and running in the next day or two, so it only needs to run another 10-20 miles on the current chain, which is being ridden on very gently. Once the SV's running the CBR is getting completely laid up, resprayed and major service with just about everything replaced, ready for MJ to have some fun on it in 2010.
