Read before Watching, sound needed...

This guy is shooting a 50 CAL. Watch the dust when he fires. The target is
a steel plate 1000 yards away. You can hear the ping of the hit, and then
the bullet comes back and hits the ground just in front of his position,
then tumbles up hitting the earmuffs, knocking them off of his head. The
footage is amazing. You can hear the bullet as it tumbles through the air on
its course back toward the shooter. He's lucky it hit the dirt first. He is
okay, and obviously very lucky. The bullet grazed his temple. What a
difference a half an inch makes!

The Barrett Rifle is a stunning piece of kit.

I have a friend whos using one in the forces at the moment.
The best thing about these rifles is the fact that in the right hands, they can take out a multi million dollar aircraft on a runway from a mile away with a 1 dollar round:thumleft:

By the time they work out where its come from, the sniper is well clear:)

It's an anti-materiel rifle, it'll go through a trucks bodywork and wreck the engine, if it hits body armour, the round will go through it like paper.

There were a few kicking around South Armagh in the bad old days, one was concealed in the back of an old Bluebird, pop the hatch and bang bang.:(:(

Beautiful weapon with a terrible purpose.

.50 is a baby compare to this.............:D:D

If that hit you, you'd be having an extremely bad day.:cool::cool:

I can't imagine anything more scary than knowing that you could be being tracked by a sniper who could take you out at any time, the psychological damage they must do to an enemy without firing a shot must be huge!

Fake, as the bullet is faster than sound, you would of heard the ping after

sorry matey your wrong, the .50 cal bullet hasnt got the speed of a smaller projectile due to its mass.

Nope, for .50 a get bullet velocities of 800m/s + sound being 330 ish through air if i recall my middle school lesson correctly lol.

Only in America would they thing its a good idea to fire at metal targets! Sigh. Wood with dirt or rubber behind it. ;)

As to the sound. It sounds ok to me. The noise of it returning is going to be after the ping obviously as after that I doubt the bullet will still be going fast at all, certainly not much if any faster than sound. Then as it hits the person its only a few meters away so there would be virtually no lag between sound and light, or not enough for us to notice. The wistle sound if the bullet was still going faster than sound would be having a Doppler effect which would explain the strange whistle noise coming back.

As to the penetration, a vehicle generally has very thin plates or armour, and engine blocks of soft aluminium or thin steel. If they are using a couple of inch of Iron or hard steel plate to fire at, it wont go through it, unless they are going for specific AP rounds, and in a sniper I cant imagine they would.

Crazy init :)

At 1000 yards away, after the bullet strikes the target the sound travelling back will take 3 seconds.

Gun goes off, just over 1 second later the bullet hits the target 1000 yards away, the sound of the bullet hitting the target now takes 3 seconds to return. So after the guns fired the ping will be heard 4 seconds later.

The actually delay is less than 1 second. So the target must be around 150 metres away at most. The bullet ricoshet will most likely be slower than sound hence you hear it coming back.

At that distance it makes the event more plausible too.

No idea where 1000 yards figure came from, someone pretending to be a better shooter than they are lol.

You can definitely get AP rounds for a Light-fifty, make one hell of a mess by all accounts.

They are awsome weapons. and huge up close and personal. There was one in the armoury in Lisburn when i was there. They are really heavy , No doubting their awsome fire power. and they are used by snipers. however their weight and bulk gives them a distinct disadvantage, hence why the 7.62 sniper rifle is the weapon of choice for sniping still.

Barrett light .50 will fire any of the .50cal (12.7mm) rounds.

Usual ones to fire are the BMG (Basic Machine Gun iirc) and thats a lead jacketed slug.

Now if you have access to military grades of ammo (or live outside the good old UK), API (Armour Piercing Incendary) or API-T (Armour Piercing Incedary Tracer) are quite reliably available.

Other more exotic ammo types are purely military only such as Depleted Uranium but generaly only available inb 20mm+.
