Lubrication - chain

Hello, I'm being tempted by a Loobman after wondering why my chain, despite regular and generous spraying has some rusty bits. Any advice from the experienced? (boom-boom)

Yes. Get a Scottoiler instead.

Use elbow grease, some parraffin and a toothbrush to clean the chain. Then lubricate generously. This should be ok until your scottoiler arrives in the post, which you can then fit and can pay far elss attention to your chain (but dont ignore it completly)

a loobman will do the job the same as a scottoiler clean and re-lube it while you wait for your loobman to arrive

ive used a loobman before, simple neat idea' just remember to give it a squeeze whilst out riding, scotoilers are no fuss maintenance but they can go wrong, and not work...either one tho is alot easier than normal routine'....shaft drive is BEST THO;)

I had a shaftie before! Wuz nice but SV is more fun. BTW Thanks Alpinestar hero, did what you said and the chain looks virgin again! Am too hard up for a Scottoiler ATM - website says 80 odd! **** So will get a Loobman until I find a reasonable price / better source of pennies! Cheers for all the advice all those who have advised!

I think you can get them cheaper, look on ebay for them :D in any case though, £80 on a scottoiler will instantly potentialy save you £110 on new chain and sprockets, since they have the potential to double the life of a chain and sprocket set

As for chain lubes, thre is some castrol stuff that is quite good :)

Scottoilers are great, once fitted and set up then the keep the chaining looking nice no matter the weather and IMO extend the life of the chain considerably. It doesn't mean you can leave your chain completely as its no substitute for a good clean of the chain now and again. :)

Agree totally. When I can stretch to one or get a decent 2nd hand one I definitely will. Im not a complete lazy sod about maintenance, but I only have Sundays to play with bikes ATM, and getting her on a paddock stand and going at the chain with a pot of paraffin and toothbrush every week is too much time off my riding! I don't think just spraying more lube on top of the old crud does the trick either! It was satisfying cleaning it up though...

After chain cleaning in the winter, I put a light coat of ACF-50 on the chain and leave to settle before previously using chain lube, but now have scottoiler - still clean chain every now and again, and add ACF-50.

I shall do that - the rest of the bike's pickled in the stuff - I thought the drowning in sticky stuff would keep out the dreaded rot. Maybe not then! [Kicks own head]
