Has anyone else noticed their premium sky rocket recently?
I have just had new renewal through and they are asking £100 more than last year despite me turning 25 and having 6 years no claims!! So my premium is now £450.
I know they normally try to swindle you on the renewal but last year they gave me the cheapest I could find and actually if I go do a quote elsewhere they are all more expensive than my renewal even directline who I am with.

Not only that I am looking to buy a new (to me) car, exactly the type I used to own 3 years ago when I was 22 and had 3 years no claim and they are quoting the same amount now as what I paid then!!

What's going on?

I wish my car insurance was £450!

Just have a shop around when i got my renewal it was the cheapest and i couldnt find a better deal, but when ever my Dad gets a renewal he cancels the policy and then takes out a new policy with the same company because some how its cheaper

Did you tell them about the claim on your curvy Mr Spiers?

Mr Speirs
02-01-10, 11:09 AM
Yeah I did that the first year or two cos they were cheaper to cancel and take out a new policy but this time and the last my renewal was cheaper than a new policy. And actually the renewal now is still cheaper than a policy but it's still £100 more expensive and I can't understand why??

Mr speirs, i used to use direct line, but now use priviledge, who are underwritten and owned by driect line.
They are cheaper for some reason, same cover everything.
Try them, or one of the comparison sites, there is always someone cheaper.

Mine was stupid expensive in October when it was due...... direct line wanted £650 to renew!!!! Shoped around and got it for just over £400 with break down cover.

On a good note, my van insurance went down this year to £250, im with Quoteline direct for my commercial insurance and for some reason went down £50.

Cheapest cover is not always the best BTW.

Didn't make a claim.

Ok, there goes that theory then!

I still think its stupid that if you bin a bike, your car insurance gets affected:confused:

Mr Speirs

Privilage was more than £200 more expensive than my renewal quote.
It looks like my renewal quote is the cheapest but when you are paying more than the previous year you can't help but feel cheated somewhat.
But this is what I am saying everyone that provides car insurance seems to have bumped their prices up significantly.

I know that's what's bringing the price up also. I always have protected no claims, no voluntary excess which always adds upwards of a hundred quid. My renewal still has this included too.

It seems everybodys insurance is different, even when the details are similar.
Shopping around is the only way if you feel your paying too much, maybe offer higher excess, limited mileage etc that can sometimes lower the premiums.

I've often seen my premiums jump up for no reason. I think they just rely on people being lazy and not shopping around. I have a diesel Scenic. I have 20 yrs no claims and just lost the 3 speeding points I had as it was more than 5 years ago. In December the insurers bumped it up by £75 to £280. I shopped around and got it for £180 comprehensive, even with business use.

My advice - go to moneysavingexpert.com and follow his guidance for getting the best quote using a combination of comparison sites. I got mine through gocompare.com, which directed me to M&S financial services for the best quote.

just had myine renewed. £611 with 7yrs ncb with 1 claim. They originally wanted £970 till i told them where to go

Mr Speirs
02-01-10, 01:13 PM
See I think £611 is too expensive as I paid £360 fully comp, protected no claims and no voluntary excess lasy year, now its £450 and the compulsory excess has gone up to £450!!

Well I can't afford to buy a car thats worth much so if i want to drive a car as well then i have no choice really.I could have gotten maybe £400 quid cheaper if i had chose a different car but i wasnt willing to drive something thats the same size as a lunch box with a piddly little 1.2 litre engine.

Its not all based on engine size.

Some of the ratings are based on security too.

Jenn went to the freelander from her saxo and although the car was worth worth more and had a bigger engine (nearly a litre bigger) the insurance was the same.

I paid way more than that last year

Was that a rhetorical question?
Well if not then, because it's necessary to work. I pay the ridiculous premiums so I can have a slightly better job, I need the car to do my job which makes the car pay for itself.

Yes it was.

I must have been lucky as I have never (and make a point of) paying more than £600 at the very most for any insurance.

I dont drive small cars either, first car was a 1.9 205 gti at 17 £598 fully comp.

Went onto all sorts, 309 gti, 405 mi16, fiesta rs turbo, escort rs turbo, primera ezx, mondeo st200 then the 220 the list is endless but all under £600 and TPFT at the very least (usually on the older cars).

I know its based not just on age and engine size etc but also on postcode and type of car and type of security too.

Am I just lucky or do I just shop about for the best deals?

Its not like I'm really old either but both my bikes and the car put together dont even come to £600:confused:

Where are you guys getting these quotes from?

You possibly got there before all the spotty spaztics raped the statisics, I shop around extremely well, can't afford not too. I could make a point of refusing to buy insurance if it's over £600 but if that means I'm doing a job and earning £6k less I'm shooting myself in the foot for not just splashing out £3k on insurance.

Fair point.

Jenn has just totaled one of my cars, lost her no claims bonus (insurance company seems to have frowned at the fact that it was on its roof when she climbed out:rolleyes:), has been driving for 2 years now and it 27.
The car is parked on the street and is a 2001 1.4 206.

Insurance, FC just over £600.

Age and gender will be the main factor for her, I'm 19 and male and needed a high mileage policy with business cover. I've had an old bike accident settled in my favour now and aged so things are getting a bit better.

Slightly more on topic with monsieur speirs - sounds like they're just trying it on shop around if you hadn't already. I would every year regardless, I wouldn't trust leaving it up to them to name a price.

I don't pay for my car stuff but my girlfriend who has 8 years no claims and is 25 just tried to change the car on her insurance as she is 6 months in and they refused to insure her new car because it is over 20k. So she has had to cancel her insurance for the year and start again.

It's a bit of a joke nowdays this insurace business.

becos fraudulent claims are costing the insurance industry billions and they need to recoup their losses somehow... for every 10 files we handle.... 1 is fraudulent. :( impacts the your premium come renewal....

This is aimed at the companies rather than just you but; if they can prove that statistic why can't they recoup the money from those responsible?

I usually go on all the usual comparison sites, compare/confused etc, and then check the cover/conditions to make sure there are no hidden nasties. I have business use but reasonably low mileage. Inevitably I end up with one of the well known names (RAC/AA/MoreThan/Aviva etc).

As the others say, I think they do tend to try it on a bit on the basis that quite a few people will simply renew anyway. Also it's quite common to get a quote online, then phone them and give the quote reference, and they come up with a lower figure than the online quote. That happened to me last car renewal with the RAC.

It might be worth speaking to a broker, sometimes they can get a good deal for you specifically.

As we all know, the insurance business is a complete mystery, but that's the way it is.

would make more sense and i agree totally

takes lots of man hours to investigate and the police arent that "bothered" with white collar crime... (and that from an ex cop now investigating insurance fraud) and its not really the insurance companies themselves, but the insurance institute affiliate which also covers you and pays out your claim if hit by an uninsured driver etc.

Mine was around £600 with Admiral... very expensive but I aim to shop around in June when my insurance is up for renewal.

£450 is actually alright!

I don't trust comparison sites at all anymore they just don't work, there's a problem somewhere whenever I enquire about it all they say is 'we make some assumptions about you' however I've entered all information correctly into the bloody things (same questions individual companies ask you) yet when I get back the results on further inspection the companies somehow have incorrect info. I always have a gander online then ring round, usually takes a couple of days but the only way to be sure. Oddly enough this year I had the first time a comparison site over quoted for a policy I rang the company they went through the details I corrected them on a few things and it came back over a grand cheaper.
Aviva's phone price was also about £500 more favourable than online - the 10% buy online discounts are a load of balls.

Same for me Dave. The comparison sites never seem to be right when I actually phone up a company and use that quote ref. They ask to run through the details, then the price is bumped up loads and they try to convince me that it will still be cheapest.

LV have consistantly been cheapest for me for the past three years.

yep..

TPFT was the same as comp last year

Its due to the economy, less money to invest so premiums have to go up

2008 to 2009 My premium was £300.18

2009 to 2010 premium renewal was £322.80, despite not having any claims. Phoned them up, complained, and it got it renewed for
£295.60

That's for a top of the range Mondeo with all the toys (leather, cruise, etc). Can't complain too much that, and thats fully comp with 3 named drivers on the policy too, each earning their own no claims bonus.. and I can drive any other car or hire car should I need one....

Admiral are competitive when it comes to wanting to keep your business. The AA were chancers with then quoting me "a greal deal at £864 and that's with no driving other vehicles, and no named drivers - ha!!" Needless to say their quotes and chance for my business was binned....

No but being a 18 year old lad doesent help at all, anything above a 1.6 litre and insurance basically shot up by around 800 quid. I do want a 4x4 though and a 2.5 litre frontera is cheaper to insure than a 2litre frontera sport, I need to find an old disco there not that much of an increase.
