Pffft....you have all of that () and then you go and spoil it all with a surface mounted LCD in the Kitchen? I'd at least have expected one of those flip down LCD's that are attached to the underside of the cabinets so that it could be hidden away.
9/10, must try harder.

Yep, I work for a custom install company. Our average systems these day range from £100000 to abuout £500,000 and we work for a lot of big names.
I'm mainly office bassed but I build the equipment racks as in the photo. Our complete systems can control lighting, heating, aircon, door entry cctv and of course blinds and plasma lifts etc. We also do full power home cinemas with projectors etc.

Here's a little shot fo cabling in the smaller of the two racks when I'd just started it.
As you can see most of the audio and networking is in, as are the phone points for the sky box. Still to go in is all the control, Rs232, IR and Crestnet plus a 16/8 HDMI matrix switch and all the video cabling that goes with it.

Well- a few days into my new setup ownership now. Here's the list-
Panasonic 42" TX-P42G10 plasma screen
Sony BDP-360 Blue Ray player (anyone know how to make DVD playback multi region on this?)
Pioneer VSX-C301 amp
TDL Saturn 10 front speakers
Yamaha NSP-110 speakers- rear, centre and sub (slowly being replaced!).
The screen is fantastic, as is the player- watched District 9 and Terminator: Salvation (OK- not great, but not meh either) now on BD.
Also watched LOTR- Fellowship disc 1 to test the upscaling. Very good- better than my DVD player, but it does show up the artifacts of DVD M-Peg compression on the finer detail- you can easily see where BD will improve on the DVD picture. My DVD player is now kept in reserve- once I get an amp with 6 channel co-axial analogue inputs, it'll be put back into play as an SACD player.
That said, DVDs still have a great picture and the new setup really shows them off. It's about as close to being at the cinema as I can get in my flat now. All I need is a sofa, a set of motorized curtains in front of the screen and an usherette for the popcorn. And a few more Blu-Ray discs!
I'll post up pics once I've sorted them- before and after, so you can see the vast improvement to the flat.

Probably written by the same people who will tell you that a really expensive co-ax (with a signal direction identified on it so it only runs properly one way) is much better than a £5 cable pair. Yeah...right, I am sure they can hear the difference.
There seems to be a huge amount of BS around the audio world.
barwel1992
05-01-10, 03:21 PM
yup now what im getting is older stuf was limited to 33ft and now it can do over 100ft but the cable must not be kinked or bent over 90o lol confusing
amnesia
05-01-10, 04:11 PM
Depends what the fibres are made of I guess. If you kink them then the structure of the material is damaged and you would get reflections in the fibre.
You can bend fibres anyway you like, providing you don't have a radius on your bends smaller than recommended.
barwel1992
05-01-10, 04:40 PM
true also depends if the toslink cable is plastic or glass/plastic compound
aparently the glass is better for longer cables but glass is more fragile so is not good for long cables (as long cables tend to kink) so its a no win situation lol i will just use coaxal(digital) if i need to use long cables

Well- I have War of the Worlds and really want to hear the 5.1 mix- one of my favourite albums. There's some other stuff I'd like to hear on SACD- Floyd, Peter Gabriel, a bit of classical. While I've got the player, I may as well take advantage when I eventually get an amp that'll do it.

lol that much money and my GF has a bigger screen than that :P
120 inch projector 1080i 5.1 digital surround sound 2 tanoy floor standers mission center and self made rears and a big very expensive valve sub (200w)

13-01-10, 01:53 AM
got my sony speakers and thorght ohh god what have i broght when i first fired them up so so tinny and dident sound/look like they can do 120w (rms) but then realised i had the speakers set to small and my sub on (couldent hear it as i was on top of it and volume was low)
so then fliped it over to large so they got the full range and lo and behold they come to life a little more so gave them a work out of BnB electro and metal and they started to losen up so then disconected them a wired them in the the rear suround channel pluged my maudaunts shorts (ms25ti 300w rms pure titanium tweeter, using gold bannana plugs) and decided to switch them back down to small (all channels) and let them rip with a bomb sene from tears of the sun (the were on top the maurdaunt)
the sound was prety awsome bulet noises and fighter jets going from one speaker to another and visa versa front to back left to right, shame i carnt use them as surounds at the moment as my bedroom needs to be changed for that but still can use it in 2 chanel suround mode so they all out put the same thing they seem to add some definition to the top end along side the maurdaunts due to the smaller base pin. crossover is set to 100hz at the moment as 80hz seems to make the sub a bit weedy as it dosent go that low (cheep yam good quality thogh)
still need some tweeking and so on but overall im quite impresed for £38 open box from amazon inc next day delivery :D
next thing im ordering (this friday) is a wharfedale 9cc center speaker 120w(rms) 6 ohms impedance 80hz to 24khz
then a new sub im posibly going to buy a rel acoustics stentor(1 not 2 or 3) 200w -400w Max active sub 25hz to 150hz £4000 rrp but it dosent work (at the moment) see if the GF's mum will let me have it for £20 or so :P ohh and it weighs 50kg :p
all good fun

running 3.1 atm :/
also spiked my sub had to drill holes and fit the spikes that were a pain in the ass because i managed to drill in to a odd placed brace, oh well
my room as it is at the moment the two small rears will be wall mounted as rears at some stage the center will also be mounted above my screen as well on a adjustable mount so it can be articulated to where ever i sit/lie

Took delivery of one of these yesterday to control our TV, Bluray, DVD surround system and NTL cable box.
Easy to use, simple to set up and the online upgrade process works a treat (no pre-installed codes worked with the bluray player).
I have programmed a couple of functions that were not part of the pre-installed codes by making use of the remote's 'learning' function. I am sure I will program a few more as I come across the need for them.
Not keen on the buttons in the centre, but for £17 its great. Looks good in the dark too.
