View Full Version : Snow day...

Richie

Got up at 05:45, defrosted the car....
Set off to work at 06:10, from Nr Sunderland, got as far as A1 junction 57, met a nice police officer who asked where I was headed. "Catterick" I told him, He said don't bother..
I rang work to say I was stuck on the A1 in a jam, they said "Go Home..!"

Yippy, I've got a snow day.

I phoned in yesterday as I could not make the 200 yards to the A6 which had been gritted, 3 cars making love at the bottom of of the hill. All bus services out of Chorley suspended. All taxis off the road.

The wife had to walk home from work and walk back in this morning. NHS staff have been told if they live within an hours walking distance they must come in. Great she has a blue badge because she cannot do more that 100 yards without pain and needs to rest. She left this morning at 7:30 to start at 9.00.

Snow hasnt stopped play here :(

Its stopped play here too. its about 20cm deep so the front acts as a snow plow. That in itself is ok but I have a very steep hill to go up as I live in an old quarry. It doesnt get gritted but the council said they might come and plow it soon.

At home today, not because I couldn't get in (we've only had 4" of snow and I'm a rufty-tufty northerner for whom this is a light dusting) but because the schools are closed.

Mrs Jabba made it into work OK in the Skud Roomster (which she now likes ) but may be sent home.

Still snowing here quite heavily. Will teach the kids (aged 11 and 9 and who've never seen snow worthy of the name before) to build a snowman later :-D

Its not to bad here, but theres enough to make driving on the side roads fun. Seen a few slides. TBH I dont why the bloke in the van attempted to drive down the steep hill by our hous, well he didnt really drive he slid quite along way.

I took the 4 x 4 to work Liz has stayed at home today.

About 8 inches here and still coming down nicely so a snow day for me. I just hope at least one member of staff at the pub has made it in cos that's where I'm heading to 'work from home' later.

I used to work with a lad who would phone in every winter with the "I'm snowed in excuse". Pilky lived in the hills down a 1 mile farm track off a country lane.

1979 the apprentice training officer had had enough of this and decided to pay Pilky a surprise visit. Borrowed the training managers company car and set off.

3 miles from Pilkys he drove into a snow drift and wrote off his bosses car and set off on foot. Eventually he saw a light in the distance and went cross country to it. Pilkys mum answered the door to him. She being a nice sort put him up for two days whilst he assisted in the digging out of the track that would enable them to get their landrover onto the road.

Strangely after that it was always accepted that if Pilky phoned in. It was genuine.

Well... the car would not get out of the close. It's a steep hill and no-one has even attempted for the last 4 days as its about a foot deep in snow. And its a sports car - rear wheel drive, and the front bumper would probably act as a snow plough up until the point where it got ripped off.

So that left, parked in the garden with direct access to the road on the other side of the house, the SV. Fortunately the battery was indoors on a charger, so I popped it all back together, losing one of the side panel bolts somewhere in the snow in the process, and off we set with no further issues. Until I got to work 55 miles later, and the car park is 8 inches deep in snow as well. Ho hum.

So... does anyone have a spare side panel bolt?

I've also realised that the standard control layout isn't good for snow & ice. When you're skating across slippery stuff, you really want both feet down. You also want your rear brake. The two aren't compatible.

I live 67 miles from work. I swept 8 inches of snow off the car before I set off. I made it just fine. Not so sure about the drive home though. I was told an hour after I left another 8 inches had fallen. It's still snowing here in Reading as well. Looking at the AA road watch map, traffic is at a stand still on the M4 between Reading and Swindon Junc 11 to 15. I am going to Junction 17 with another 6 miles along country roads after that.

With overnight temps predicted to be -6 degC between 3:00 and 6:00am and it still to be -4:00 degC at 9:00am, the Council has decided that all Cardiff's schools will be shut tomorrow.

Another "Snow Day" for me :-D

Messie
06-01-10, 03:41 PM
Snow came just at the wrong time today - about half an hour AFTER getting to work, and just as all the kids were arriving. We had to close the school at 11.30 mostly because of the buesses. About 75% of our kids get into school by bus and the companies were saying they wouldn't be able to run after 12. They were right too, as it has been chucking it down ever since.
I wonder whether we'll be open tomorrow? The Head will make the decision at 6 am, so we all have to get up early, just in case!

neither i say. Desperate to get home and not wait for hours on end on the hard shoulder, i think.

I did the same thing last year in the snows. Not cos i wanted to but cos the day before i'd had to wait 4hrs for recovery to come get me. But i was lucky, i noticed the nail in my tyre when i was at a petrol station so i got to wait in their nice warm shop and brink coffee etc.

I took a snow day today - my first ever I think!

TBH despite 6-8 inches of snow I could have got in, but with snow still falling all day I would have just spent most of the time worrying about whether the trains were going to be stopped, thus leaving me stuck overnight 30 miles from home with only my office to sleep in. And waking up in the office on your day off is just not a good plan!

Instead I took stuff home with me last night to do at home. And I have been doing some work...in between building a huge snowman and taking photos of snowy stuff :D

Maaan I love the white stuff...snow that is of course ;)

It snowed about eight inches here yesterday, froze solid, then another inch overnight.

I left at 0545hrs for my 20 mile commute, made it in at 0655hrs. Then I spent about 130 miles worth of fuel on the motorways of Manchester, pulling cars out of the central reservation barriers and dragging cars out of drifts.

Now did you know, that white flaky stuff ain't dandruff, it's SNOW. it's SLIPPY, you'll CRASH! Ho hum, they leared the hard way.

It was a beautiful day though! I managed to get a few snaps;

Going by the X6 on Top Gear, is that ^^^^ any use?

In the dry, yep, brilliant fun. In the snow, barely better than a normal car. Put it this way, one went to drag a local patrol out of a snowy road. The X5 got stuck and had to be dragged out by a shonky old Landy Defender transport services use for dropping rock salt around one of our complexes!

Several times today, I thought I was going to have to ask for help, but through luck or skill :smt037 I managed to stay mobile. The gearbox is a nightmare to get the hang of, it's electronic auto and as I often have to do quick U-turns to go after potential "customers" I find it very frustrating. The management system won't allow reverse to engage until the wheels have been locked stationary. Then the same again to get into drive. In the old X5's, it was a typical, forward and back auto box, nice and easy. This one is carp! The engines let go quite often too.

However, I would rather use the X5 than the Volvo T5's. They are a nightmare in the snow. Very powerfull, front wheel drive and auto, so no clutch control and the very wide tyres that just spin out.

Back in again tomorow and Friday, it's minus 3 now, dropping to minus 8 overnight.

Wish me luck!

I have had an email, my driving lesson (Because work consider me a risk) for tomorrow has been cancelled. they were sending the instructor up from Birmingham and he was to meet me at Billsborrow, north of Preston. As one or two PM peeps will know I know quite a bit of the fun roads round there and I was looking forward to taking my instructor on some scenic routes, specially in the snow and ice in the trough.

Personally I thought a day with an ex police instructor in those conditions would have actually been a very useful exercise.

I drive a fiat cinquicento and where there is chaos all around me, I am having no problems with my skinny little tyres. Today on the way home from work I was driving around vehicles which were getting stuck all over the place on 2 inches of snow. Who was laughing then.

I have to say though that some people just did not have a clue what they were doing and doing just about everything they should not have been.

Okay so today I am NOT travelling the 67 miles to work again today. The big freeze last night has made the country roads, and most importantly, the big hill an inpassable object. Snow day for me as well (although I think that should be ice day. -9 right now). Brrrrr

Sally - you must be in the eye of it for once. I tell you live goes on here as normal despite the snow, this ice and the -15's -
there are a few prob's with side roads and trains but apart from that we are all functioning as normal
Though I did laugh myself silly last night watching the news and seeing poor old Englandshire struggle
Wonder what would happen if they had the same amount of snow that my friend has - 25 inches deeper in the drifts
Snow days don't exist up here for many (unfortunately)

Jeez I don't believe it. Yesterday when the weather was at it's worst with over a foot of snow already on the ground and still snowing, I travelled 67 miles to get to work. I was the only one on my team to have made it in and I live the furthest away. Today because of the freeze last night the hill I have to drive down is like a sheet of ice so decided not to risk crashing and stayed at home. My manager is now complaining because the rest of my team are in and I didn't make it. What a w****r.

I have given the whole of my team ( 8 people) a Snow Week! there is no point in getting people to drive to work if they are not confident of driving in Snow/Ice and also do not have the required equipment to get themselves out of trouble. At least this way I get 8 people who are happy to be at home, remain motivated and will probably want to catch up on missed worked time sometime in the future.

Where as I feel I need to take the risk tomorrow morning because I know my manager is not impressed I didn't make it into work this morning. I am sure he will be willing to cover damage to my car if it slides down the big hill I have to negotiate and crashed into the house at the bottom, and to cover any hospital bills. NOT. Good on you Saeed. Not so sure they are going to be THAT willing to catch up on missed work though.

I have just been informed my snow day yesterday is in fact a days annual leave. Not happy. I think I may be feeling ill sometime soon. :(

I would have expected it. Thought it was standard most places.

Is it? Well I will be getting my day back one way or another.

Pretty sure it is most places I've worked, not huge companies though. I only live 6 miles from the office so never had to take on yet though.

My school has been closed since Wednesday so I have been having a few snow days. Hope the snow over the weekend doesn't mean more closures next week!

I believe it has to be agreed by both employer and employee. The other options available are to take the time as unpaid leave or your employer can make you make the time up in overtime.

I have had the last two days off because of snow. Wednesday wasn't so bad because when I phoned in to say I couldn't get in I was told that no one was going out that day anyway (being a courier service).
Yesterday my car decided it wasn't going to let me in via the key fob and unlocking it with the key in the door just triggered the alarm and immobiliser and it wasn't until half eleven that the sensor unfroze and let me start the car.

I have Monday and Tuesday of next week booked as holiday but have been asked if I can cover because the boss is on holiday and probably will have trouble getting a flight back here. Am a little pi**ed off but having had the time off last week can't really argue.

Just as well you said that! ;)
You're also supposed to do the roof so it doesn't fall off when you're driving. :p

Oh mate! That looks awefull! It was suppose to snow here today, but it was just cold. Minus two or so, which after the minus fifteen I was out in on the hard shoulder yesterday, felt positively warm!

We went out to play today at Dunham Massey!
