To my and many other's frustration, my work have introduces a URL block on Facebook & Twitter,
Personally its not a big issue, its their internet they can do as they like, however its permanent, no lament during lunch.? now this is the frustration because I used to spend 10 - 15 minutes at lunch on fb, be content and get on with some work during my lunch.
Now the stubborn part of me wants to get up and leave at 1pm and come back at two, I have no interest in using a proxy server just to get at them, generally they are an ok employer.
I don'y smoke, I don't chat with everyone all day, and it used to keep me borderline sane and in the office.
I genuinely think it will be counter productive,
Whats your workplace like for this sort of thing?
and before you say "oi.. ur using the org during work hours you cyber skiving slag). I'm on a t break..

You will probably find it's Ahole thats just being annoying, so yeah have a word with someone that might be able to change it.
I use my phone to keep in touch on FB as well as browsing the net. You might find it easier to do just that instead.

no blocks here, although its meant to be monitored.
Never had any complaints from bosses apart from when been caught on mini clip playing games.
But like you I take multiple mini breaks through the day and eat at my desk. Makes the day go quicker and work seems less of a bind.
I've thought about blocking social networking sites but as I use them myself I'd be a hypocrite. Anyway it's good to be able to have a break from time to time, if I thought that matters were being abused then I'd clamp down.

Lol i think at work they would be happy if all i did was go on facebook, instead of messing around creating little movies on cctv :thumleft:
As part of my role I get to decide/influence strategy in areas like this. I work for a very large FMCG company that has held fairly traditional views on these sorts of things but we are now in a position where I would say we are fairly forward thinking.
We are actively encouraging freedom of choice, trialling schemes such as providing a budget to some users to go and buy their own laptop etc, manage it themselves, use whatever software they deem suitable and so on. We are learning alot from the experiences.
In the case of social networking and just general internet access we are pretty much totally open. Yes we have usage policies but we treat people as adults and expect them to act responsibly. We provide company cars but we dont fit speed limiters, you know the rules and are expected to follow them.
If the right level of trust exists between the manager and employee then thats all thats necessary.
For every disciplined employess, there are 3 or 4 non disciplined ones, hence the ban!

Only p0rn and gambling is blocked at my place, so can use near enough everything you'd want to at work.
we had a ban on the usual (pron/downloads) then they went further and banned lotto - had to reverse that as several board members complained lol. Personally although its good to have in my lunchbreak if its not there I dont miss it...not enough hours in the day mostly!

yep, thats what we have experienced, leave it based on trust and you get all sorts of sites accessed
we took over 4 sites recently and since their old system was based on trust, for now we will leave them like that but within a couple of days there was some "interesting" URL's showing up on the log files.
Even though they now have to input their user name and password to get to the above said sites..........jeeze, how complacent or thick can some folk be :confused:

it was the MD who instigated it, Cant really tell him to stick it.
Internet usage is monitored at work. There have been people sacked because of excessive usage. There has even been one sacked for the sites he tried to access even though those sites were blocked.
you are paid to work not surf the internet.
do what you want on your lunch hour, just dont use company 'bandwidth'. your company pays a lot of money to have a certain bandwidth, if employees use up this bandwidth by being on the internet then the company has none left to run its business.
I work for BT so that rule doesn't really apply. :lol:

Work blocked fb after serious abuse of time on it, its available between 12-2 only now and is still using more traffic than anything else... :smt037
Gradually more and more sites going lunchtime only as and when its picked up on, we've also had people sacked for trying to bypass

All social networking sites are blocked at work and I can use the org from work.
Work have a strict policy on how I can use Facebook full stop let alone limit its use to a dirty LAN and no access whatsoever on the main network. Ive always accepted there are some jobs within the civil service that put you in that position where work can dictate a number of things in your private life and have no major issue to it tbh.
But in part its why I have a generic account, no private info, no private info in any status comments or anything that goes on my or others wall, and generally why I really only use it sparingly these days. :) Its also why on any forum Im on theres never any info in my profile :)
It must be a tough life being a deep undercover secret agent, brokering deals with the CIA, Al Queda and the National Front for the Liberation of Garden Gnomes.
