Little bit of advice for other future newbie fork oil seal replacers.

This was perfect tool for tapping the top bush in by hand, and the oil seals in with the combination it, a bolster and hammer.

Just remove the end cap and rubber and trim the inner seperator with a knife.

I bought a 40mm coupler and it was too narrow to fit the fork leg. Forks are ~48mm diam on my SV1000 - are they smaller on the 650 or is the B&Q expansion fitting bigger than a standard coupler?

i'll stick to proper tools thanks. ok so they are 30-40 for each size of driver but when you need it it's going to do the job.

i always look at what a garage would charge to do the job then look at the price of the tools for doing it myself. it usually works out to be the same as buying the tools but then i have the tools for future use.

Good call there me thinks, if you can afford to get the tools that is...

It's just a tube, anything that's the right diameter and has square end is the right tool.

There are many places where the right tool is indispensable, this is not one of those places.

I tapped the top bushes into place with a hammer and drift plus a little patience.

I first fitted the washer over the bush, slid a couple of toilet roll tubes over the fork tube, put insulation tape over the shaft of the drift and tapped away (12 o'clock, 18:30, 08:45, 15:15 etc. etc.)
