An old bike chain I can have?

Doesn't have to be functional as long as it's in fewer than several pieces...

Sorry

Drive chain

Will be used to create some snow chains for Bavaria...

Cool. I'll have a gander, think I've got the forked one I took off mine other month kicking about somewhere, no promises though it might be under a load of snow. You care if it's rusty?

Can't see it being a problem so long as it's flexible enough to curve round the tyre

Can you have a looksee and let me know how wide the chain is, the tonka toy knobbles on the TKCs are much bigger than on the bike in the photo so it might just swallow up the width of a bike chain:mad:

How wide or how high? If your tread sipes are deeper than chain is high then no point.

Can you not get proper chains for bikes?

Snow chains and stud the knobblies?

I duno, am just going by another thread :)

No point doing both lol
What about these?

Yeah, width/height/whatever, as you say if it doesn't peek over the treads it's not gonna work;)

You can buy snow chains for bikes but they're ridiculously expensive, €100+ per wheel

Put into perspective I've purchased 16 half decent tip down straps for £20 - add a length of chainlink or a freebie motorcycle chain and it's a fraction of the price...:thumleft:

Studs would be the best thing but they're illegal to use in Germany

Might work, but I suspect the ADV would shred nylon rope fairly quickly:shock:

Well that chain I have is a tsubaki sigma 525. I might also have a 520 from GPZ... Sure you can find dimensions somewhere.

Actually I did remove both of these with finesse, subtlety and an angle grinder. But I don't suppose that makes any odds for your use.

Hmm, I can get tech specs for the 525 chains but nowhere lists the height of the plates... I'll have a look on the ADV tomorrow as presumably they're going to be pretty similar... hopefully;)

edit: must have thrown it out, canny find it

Hmm, had a look at the tyres this morning, treads aren't as tall as I thought, only 9mm in the centre and 11m at the edge of the tyre. Problem may be there's only 19mm between the blocks as you go around the direction of rotation of tyre, ie; the chain would need to be under 19mm wide to fit between them. The one fitted to the ADV is 24mm wide:eek: - Sigma 525 chains are 22mm pin length according to their tech specs...

So... Back to the drawing board:mrgreen:

Mountain bike chain with a rubber packer under it?

TBH that 525 I've got here is probably knackered enough to bend around the tyre edge-on!

Thouught of that, but how would you fix it round the rim? MB chains are tiny

Use a chain tool and place one of these (http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.scaffolding-direct.co.uk/product_images/Large_394.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.scaffolding-direct.co.uk/Debris_Netting_and_Monoflex_Sheeting/STRONGFORGE/Elasticated_Monoflex_Sheeting_Toggles_5mm_-_Packs_of_100_394.aspx&usg=___mIwmKGEq5Aj61Y7X_dlmbHcRYI=&h=500&w=500&sz=13&hl=en&start=7&um=1&tbnid=RjyfjZDhfHo0KM:&tbnh=130&tbnw=130&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dmonoflex%2Bties%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Dof f%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rlz%3D1R1GGGL_en-GB___GB356%26sa%3DN%26um%3D1) in the link before popping the rivet back in.

Just a quick idea though.

Possible

Might just see how a lump of regular chain works out before shelling for more stuff I'd use once:D

I reckon it will sit in a tread sipe fine, maybe at a bit of an angle but it only needs to dig in, doesn't matter if it doesn't look neat!

Problem is if it's not flat it won't sit in the tread correctly, hard to describe but if the chain sits one side in and the other on the tread block the whole chain won't be pointing to the centre of the wheel:

They'll trash your rims, and see if you can get the chain between the tyre & swinging arm - if not that'll be foobarred as well.
Just to make life a little easier for yourself, use the old style spring links rather than rivet-on.
Have fun!

Is this for snow? (I imagine your off road tyres would be the best)
Or ice?

How do you know it will be ice & why are you riding on ice?

The chain will only be across the centre of the tyre, by the time it gets to the edge of the tyre it'll be flat webbing strap that'll fit easily between the tyre and the swingarm and won't shag the rims anything like chain...

Because there's been ice every year and it's the only way to get to the site...;)
