What's this thread all about then?

Well a few people have wanted to comment and chat about the pictures in the monthly photo competition but to keep the thread clean to make it easy for moderating and judging chat isn't allowed. This thread is for chat, comments, “I've been there!” remarks, etc, etc, you can even ask for tips on the pic you have posted if you wish.

Firstly for the rules of the photo competition go to this page: http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=144708

Showing an image in this thread

Next if you want to comment or chat about a picture how do you reference it into this thread?

Simple, if you are using Internet Explorer then right click on the image and select properties from the menu.

A small window will appear and you will want to copy the Address (URL) of the image. Highlight the text, right click and select copy.

Next paste this into your quote or reply in this thread and add image tags before and after the address, so the images address is:

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q37/5hort5/sachs1.jpg

The image address with the image display tags is:

IMG]http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q37/5hort5/sachs1.jpg[/IMG]

(Note the image tags start with [IMG] and not just IMG], you need both square brackets but if I put both then the image would display and not the exmaple tags.

As this example shows:

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q37/5hort5/sachs1.jpg

If you are using another browser then you'll probably know how to do it ;-)

Last thing when posting peoples pics always credit the poster of the image as it is their property.

Chat away :-)

Ok if i remember right we got 20 quid return tickets with Ryanair for a day trip to Venice at the end of 2007. Had 7 hours in Venice and just walked all over the place. As the light began to fade i could see the sky getting some nice colour but i just could not find a good composition. All at once this scene welcomed me as we crossed a bridge and the beauty really caught my eye.
At the time i had a Pentax dslr with a FA50mm 1.4 lens attached. The pic was taken handheld at 1/6 second with iso at 800 and aperture of f2.4.
It has been printed in both colour and also looks good in black/white if you add some contrast and several freinds have copies on their walls. Technically the white balance is a teeny bit off but other than that i was happy with what i got. Could have cropped out the bottom boat too but would square pic off a bit too much.

Well traditionaly its been vote on just one, but the standard is very high this month and some fantastic pics have already gone up.

So maybe top 3, but I'm going to struggle to pic just 3 out of that lot.

The 6 days is brilliant. It not worth it for the whole 6 days but i would say the middle 2 or 3 would be a safe bet. It starts off with the pre 65 bikes but the best ones to see are the modern ones. I might be riding up from sussex to see it should be good. And there is plenty of places to camp where no one will bother you.

I am about to buy the 50mm f/1.4. Pretty much as fast as you can get without spending huge cash.

If you had a Nikon, I (and Filipe) would send you down to Grays of Westminster (http://www.graysofwestminster.co.uk/) as they have some awesome 2nd hand lenses in stock. 10.5mm f/2.8 is next on my list.

Yup, just checked the website, there's a 50 mm f/1.8 and a f/1.4 going for very decent prices.

And I'm still kicking myself for not buying the f/1.8 last January when they were going for £75 new. Dumb@ss.

is this 50mm f1.8 ok?

I have a canon EF 50mm f1.8. It's a plastic built lens (including mount) with a fairly slow and noisy focusing motor (compared to USM, fine in isolation). It also suffers a bit of CA when wide open (f1.8). However, for under £100 it lets you take nice pictures in low light. It gets sharper when stopped down a little (f2.2 or so and up). I'd say the 1.4 is probably a better bit of glass, but it's over 3 times the price!

I like mine, and often use it to hand round at parties on the front of the camera, though on a crop body like the 20d, it could do with being a little wider for that purpose. I'll send you a link to some of my photos with it on FB.

In terms of IS VS wide apature, both help you take clear shots in low light, but IS doesn't help get your shutter speed up, so people moving are still blurry. For a portrait lens (the 50mm makes a lovely portrait lens) it's also nice to be able to throw the background out of focus, and F2.8 and below help with that.

It's a Sigma 105mm f2.8. I know you aren't going to pizza but let me know next time I'm likely to see you and I will bring it along.
Oooh, well I'll let you know when I'm next being sociable :)

If the DX is being used as Nikon uses it, then it's for DSLRs with cropped (1.5x ratio) sensors, and yes, your D90 is one of them. ;)

The whole Crop / 35 mm (full size, 24 x 36 mm) thing is about lens coverage for a given sensor size. The so-called "digital" lenses are usually designed to be used in lower end digital SLRs, with small size sensors (APS-C, 18 x 24 mm or thereabouts - Nikon D40, D60, D70, D80, D90, D100, D200, D300, D3000 and D5000).
This means they can be smaller in size (lighter and cheaper) since they don't have to cover as much area as the 'full size' ones (FX on Nikon speak). Confusion begins when Sigma use Dx for their 'full size' range while Nikon calls their 'crop range' DX.

In a nutshell:

You can use both on the D90, only 'crop' lenses will probably be cheaper, lighter, and have worse corner performance when compared to the full size lenses.

How is everyone interpreting the "caught in the moment" theme ?

Just simply caught in the middle of doing something that wouldnt normally occur or was unusual.

That Pic of mine of Lorenzo, he was sat up looking round to check behind him before peeling off into the pitlane. I just happened to snap him like that, it almost looks like he is looking at me... or I caught him in the moment as it were.

This is what I like about vague or wooley themes it means that personal interpretation can be used and it means more people enter pictures.

Wouldn't that be more of a "once in a lifetime" type photo?
What's that on their chests?

If that's how you would interpret it then yeah.....but it's down to personal interpretation and for me...the photo fitted the brief! :-)
Cool cool :)

It's a harness to attach their leads to. Instead of choke chains

errrr mine prefers to keep himself clean, and if I tried to shove him under a shower or in a bath, he'd rip yer frickin face off:twisted: Much as hes a big baby and as soft as muck.
