View Full Version : The Godfather - Please post in this thread if you loved it
Because i couldn't stand it.
The last few months weather, has meant that sometimes the best thing to do is to sit at home and watch a good film.
I watched everything from Mr Bean to American Beauty, Fight Club, and then thought to myself id go out and buy a decent blu-ray with my birthday money.
So i have a look on the IMDB top 250 films, see that number 1 is Shawshank redemption (quite rightfully so!), and number 2 is the Godfather.
I'd never seen the Godfather before, so i thought id give this 'epic' film a try, so i got the blu-ray box set.
I found myself bored through most of the 3 hours running time, with the occasional tense atmospheres such as the scene where he finds the gun in the cubical. But the majority of the acting seemed typically false, which seems to be the case with 1970's films.
As for Marlon Brando being the best actor of all time... :-s. With all respect, i doubt if he were still alive, he would get the same reviews. There was nothing at all special about his acting skills, and in my opinion, many new actors. The same can be said for Al Pacino, and ill be watching one or two of his newer films to make a fair judgement.
I will be watching the rest of the box set, just to make sure im not missing out on anything, and not wasting my £25.
If you loved this film, can you please tell me why? Because im stumped. It didnt appeal to me at all, and i'd much rather watch the great Goodfellas anyday over the Godfather.
£25 haha got mine for £14.99 godfather's good as it show's more of the family and what it's all about rather than the action fest most mob film's end up being.

H'mm I enjoyed it, although I can't put my finger on why. No 2 is good too, but number 3 is a stinker. But I still found it ok
I tend to enjoy any good gangster movie, Goodfellas being one, once upon a time in New York is another, with the French connection being one of my all time favouritesr (although its not a gangster movie as such)
But for some reason I just can't get into the Soprano's, rented series 1, but couldn't be bothered with the rest after the first disc.

You seen the episode of Family Guy where they are all drowning in their panic room? Well what Peter says about the Godfather is exactly, word for word, how i feel about it.
Oooh, found it. Badly filmed off the telly but still...

Godfather 2 is the better film, but having said that the original is still an epic film.

it was possibly the first to show the human and uncut side of a mafiosa, it is a human story more than a action flick, more reality based than and charachter driven. a trials and tribulations story, i still love it but put it in a different genra to the likes of goodfella ,casino etc

Pure class. What did you think to "the family", bit different but interesting considering the religious discussions in other threads...

i enjoyed them all but the 2nd one is the best, the best mob film i'd have to say is road to perdition, that is an epic film and tom hanks is awesome in it, public enemy, bronx tale and casino is a must theu are brill mob films
as for brando, people say he is one of the best because of his contrast of acting with being able to play different rolls not because of the godfather

Love everything about it. I just love that era and find the whole story line fascinating, as its such an unknown. Plus the music is awesome.

:smt003 gotta love family guy. I remember seeing that on BBC 3, and thought id still give the film a chance, as much as i value Peter Griffins opinion
as for brando, people say he is one of the best because of his contrast of acting with being able to play different rolls not because of the godfather
In that case, ill try and get round to seeing some of his other films. I thought his role in the 'best movie of all time' would be the one he had the best performance in
plus it has some pretty legendary actors in it Pacino, De Niro, Brando, Redford.

I too watched all three under the same circumstances, i remember them being boring.
As for shawshank, i remember being shocked at how good it was.

yeah them altogether makes for a gravy film
these are some good films based around the mob; road to perdition, casino, miller crossing, once apon a time in america, mean streets, public enemy's, donnie brasco, a bronx tail, scarface (obviously) good fella's
i saw public enemy's when it came out and was surprised, i thought it would be poo but it was really gripping and quiet an accurate tale of john dillinger, which again surprised me as they usually like to jazz things like that up, but it is one worth watching

well each to their own but its by far the best mob film that been release for a while!
bar road to perdition tho
As for shawshank, i remember being shocked at how good it was.
When that film finished, i felt like standing up and applauding. In the middle of my living room. Epic
the godfather is a brilliant film, but as already said, hard to pinpoint why. I do disagree with the op however, and think Brando is great as Don Corleone.
Also, South Park owns family guy.
