I noticed smaller plates than the one I have around, and I assume they're legal, or they wouldn't be using them, surely! Where can I get one? How much?

I've seen plates 7 x 5.5.

It is a £30 fine if you are court but it is normally too much hassle for someone to pull you over and fill out the paperwork. Depends how often you use your bike and where you ride it, I think, As the smaller plates do look ALOT neater I must say.

got 3 plate sizes for the R1, legal , slightly smaller , and a stupidly illegal, single line strip one.

Think thats about as small as it gets while still looking ok.

Those tiny ones just make me think the owner also has a Citroen Saxo with plastic skirts, neon blue lights underneath and induction kit.

Fine is £60 since early 2009

Unlikely to get you a tug, but if you're riding like a **** they'll add it to the bill...

There is no legally specified sized number plate, there is only legally specified spacing.

If you had the number plate A1 you could have a tiny plate. I have 6 digits some of which consists of 1's which means whilst legally spaced I can manage a 6.5" x 6.5" completely legally spaced.

Just worth thinking about (I know I'm a spoilsport) but when you put a (n arsey) coppers back up with a loud exhaust or number plate (or speeding/offence£££)he's going to pull you and check everything over so if you have tinted visor (£30) + Exhaust (possibly now £60 but atleast £30) and the plate (£60) it all starts to add up.

Technically if you have a show plate or such like on, it should now fail the MOT.

New checks have been introduced to the MOT Test to ensure the registration plate confirms to the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001.
These checks will now confirm the following:

The characters and background colour comply with regulations
The character font is an a correct type
The characters are the correct size as is the size of the margin
The plates are fitted vertically
The non-reflective border is within the permitted width
Finally an unacceptable symbol or flag, such as football team crests or logo, is not displayed.
Also for vehicles registered on or after 1 September 2001 ( i.e 51 plates and later ) the additional checks will also be performed:

It displays the BSAU 145d marking
It also displays the name and postcode of the registration plate supplier
It does not display a honeycomb or similar effect background.

MOT yes, but that is once a year, so you either swap it or you double sided tape a good size one on for the test as they aren't allowed to touch/mess with anything.

I.E. with a car, you fail if you have a headlight bulb out, but if you go in the garage in daylight and leave in daylight and state, "I never drive in the dark" then the car will pass with faulty or NO headlight bulb.

I'll have to dissagree with you on that one.

If lights are fitted then they must operate.

Dual marking (Flag/football team etc, BSAU145d and postcode/suppliers name was nto reintroduced into the MOT test last year. They are a legal requirement but not for test

As above, this was not reintroduced last year. You could suggest the tester re-read section 6.3 (http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/htdocs/m1s06000301.htm) again. Also Special Notice 4/2009 (http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosa/repository/Special%20Notice%2004%20-%2009.pdf)

The introduction to the side (position) light section (http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/htdocs/m1s01000101.htm)states
"This inspection applies to all machines except those which have neither front
nor rear position lights, have such lamps permanently disconnected, painted
over or masked that are only used during daylight hours and not used at times
of seriously reduced visibility"

This 'exemption can be found in the start of the section for all lights.
It does state permanently disconnected so if its fitted it must work
Removing the bulb doesnt work unless the entire light unit, switch and wiring is also
removed

Edit, a 'daylight use' vehicle MUST have an audible warning (horn)
HTH

How does that apply to a road legal off road bike with no battery?
Thanks

On a motorbike without a battery it may be necessary to run the engine.

It would also be acceptable to fit a horn powered by it's own battery provided it was loud enough to be heard.

I would argue that to be a road legal off road bike it must have a horn, of one shape or another, certainly for MOT or it would have an exemption in the information column of the manual.

I would also want one, if another road user hadn't seen me I would want a method of signalling my presence

Surely a true off-road bike doesn't need an MOT, and by extension a horn?

I don't care about a true anything. I would like a road legal off road bike though if that's alright?

I understood that if you had lights fitted they had to work? Same with indicators, but you don't have to have them fitted for daytime mot?

Just re-read up a much more comprehensive post covering this. Sorry!
