you still need one hand on the bars anyway so whats wrong with holding the throttle open normally i have done some high mileage days not 5000 miles tho and i find the sv comfortable to do long days all the time

I have a MC Cruise on the GS - http://www.mccruise.com/. This bike does a lot of miles so the CC is worth the expense. If the money is too much then the Audiovox (popular) and Rostra are cheaper alternatives.
The SV has done many 1300mi days and I am still using a couple of large O-rings as a friction lock. Cheap and effective. There are quite a few friction lock type cruise controls on the market so take your pick.
While one or both hands always needs to be on the bars it sure is nice to be able to take the right hand off for a bit of respite. It is also nice not having to bother so much about speed control six hours into a eighteen hour ride.
