View Full Version : Rim tape - yes or no?

STR

Hi there, I have tried to look everywhere to make sure this isn't a duplicated thread. All over this place I keep seeing awesome looking bikes with some nice rim tape.

However it seems to be a conflict of interest so wat is the view.

Rim tape yes or no......

May as well ask pointy or curvey? IMO, it's your bike so do it if YOU think it looks good.

I see difference of opinion coming up...

I love it!

The florescent stuff is excellent too for pulling out of turning in the dark!

I have normal tape on my GSXR 600:

Well I have fLorescent blue and love it and thought the same as you can be seen from the side but lots of comments especially on photo thread and wondered what the general thought was.

On a sportsbike? Chav!!

On a supermoto? Acceptable, but only because they're the most Chav form of motorcycle anyway

Well, save for the scooter perhaps...

You do what you like mate , it`s your bike , you do what you want with it . I just usually punch people in the face if they don`t like anything on my bike . Not because it upsets me or anything . I like to re-program people into shutting the hell up as it`s my bike and I don`t critisize them for what they do or have .

I have ordered some red and dark red for mine this week but not sure which I'm going to use yet as might be getting rid of red leather seat so might need to choose another colour, lol.

In another thread (found it, post number 9 (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=144992))... I didn't think anyone would take it seriously though. :-k

ref :- Rim Tape... NO.

when rim tape was first introduced in the market, they said it offered better visibility....I don t know...can it replace reflectors? I Said NO because I saw some lousy " attempted applications" that didn t flatter the bikes appearance at all....

Which seems entirely fair, (if a dab harsh), but the OP did ask.

So offering an opinion is precisely what he/she requested.

BTW: No to rim tape.

I'm not sure why that's as funny as I find it :D.

Thanks for the chuckle - I may be saying that myself soon ;).

rims can look good if they're the right colour I think. A k7 GSXR is always parked outside my flat, and has red rims that I think make it look sweeter.

I bought some red rims for my er6 because I think they will complement the red frame well.

At the end of the day they cost peanuts and are a piece of cake to apply. If ya don't like em, you peel em off, just like a plaster! Imagine spending £x hundred to get them fully painted to realise they looked better before.

I reckon, buy 'em, stick 'em, see how they look. That's what I'm doing.

My opinion is it usually depends on the bike.

Older non sports rep bikes I'd say no, latest sports reps, from 05 onwards or so, I'd say yes - but only on black wheels.

STR
17-01-10, 05:47 PM
I think modern sports/ sports looking bike like a pointy with dark wheels looks really good. I just come back from a ride with a friend who has a sub zero cbr rr 600 and he said that the blue and black really set the bike off.

Its great to see what people have said and amazed at how split the pack is.

I still think yes but thats because i feel it looks good on my bike im not sure for instance if a blue naked sv would look right with tape i think it comes down to the bike.

I have black rim-tape to set off my wheels nicely, I've had the same black rim-tape on the last three bikes I've had and think it looks great on my bikes, can't say how it'd look on yours though.

Rim Tape. ;)

That would be a NO for me.

But..... I have seen a few bikes I thought it looked good on.
IMHO it looks better on black or dark coloured rims but it really depends on the bike and if it's tastefully done.

How does rim tape define chav? Besides, chavs only know how to ride scooters dont they?

allantheboss
17-01-10, 07:17 PM
Big yes from me.

Chavs don't, and can't ride motorcycles. They ride "scrammys" and "'peds" with neons and stickers from Halfords.

I use the reflective stuff on my bike.

How reflective is it? Nice and shiny, or only-a-glimmer-at-a-certain-angle sorta thing? Link? Picture? Question?

The stuff I had was very reflective, especially when illuminated along the line of sight - a bit like the scotch reflective stuff on some jackets and bags etc.

If you are worried that people will think you're a chav if you apply rim tape to your bike.... You are way too concerned with the opinions of others.
It's your bike, do what you think looks good. :D

You iz sexi chav on wiked bike yo'.

Speaking of chavs-
I was approached by to mini-chavs (about 13/14 years old) whilst getting on my bike in college a while back. They were on their bmx bikes riding around the college's bike parking-lot checking out the bikes. Mine was (of course) the biggest and fastest there, most people in college are on scooters mopeds or such. As I straddled my bike, and put my lid on, one of them approached me, and said:

"Ent dat a 125?"

To which, I proceeded to punch him in the face, and rode off.

ophic

Mine came from ebay, it was years ago but it was quality stuff. Stayed on for a couple of years and then eventually started looking tatty so I pulled it off. Most of it was still very well stuck down!

It was dark blue in daylight and only "glows" light blue when lit up by camera flash or car headlights or whatever. But then I never kept my wheels clean enough for it to be really effective.
