I have a genuine suzuki topbox and rentec rack for my pointy but unfortunately they dont both fit at once.
so I dont have the luggage capacity i'd like. ie if i want to take a tent then i cant use the topbox, whereas i'd prefer to use the top box rather than rack as its waterproof, lockable etc.
Just wondering if anyone has modded the topbox fittings so it sits behind the bike (allowing use of pillion seat) or modded the rentec rack so it can be fitted while the top box is on...
Failing this i may have to get a givi (or similar) set with topbox and panniers and sell the suzuki topbox and rentec rack.
Answers on a postcard.
Unfortunately as far as I know, the Suzuki box doesnt fit Givi plates....
I bolted a Givi plate to a spare rear seat so on and off within seconds. Also the Rentec rack is good for the tent....

Could you just bolt the box straight onto a spare rear seat (using a plate on the inside to add support). If you wanted to remove the box whilst camping etc, taking another seat or cowl wouldn't be too much hassle.

Where would his pillion then sit?? :smt064
Other than that its a decent idea for solo riding.

Hmmmm there was a thread somewhere about making a top box as suggested above, im contemplating the same thing onto a second sv seat, then just strapping the orginal seat onto my bike when i go, and switching as stated above, i'lll try find the thread for you KG.

The suzi topbox is good, its waterproof and a decent size. However for a weekend away a sleeping bad takes a lot of space and a tent just will not fit.
The simpilest solution is to find a way for the rentec rack to fit whilst the topbox is on. 2 problems, the fixing point is the same for both and would need modded in some way. Secondly the raised crpss spar of the rentec and the topbox are in the same space.
The second option is to find a way to reinforce / support the rentec and mod it to allow the suzi box to bolt to it. This would alow me to use the topbox with a pillion (handy for days away) and when in cunjunction with soft panniers would allow us the weekend trips that we currently use the soft tailpack and panniers for. However if this option i would like to only mod the rack and not the fitting plate which would allow the removal of the box (better riding whilst away) or the option to use instead of pillion.
confused, I am. Didnt say it woulb be easy.
FGO is that a rentec rack? did you have to cut / remove the raised cross member?
I realise reading this its not easy to picture, i'll try to get a couple of phots when i get the bike back together.
It is a Rentec rack. Nothing was cut or adjusted. Admittedly it is tight getting the key in the box but tbh it's nothing to be concerned about.
This is the underside of the seat. You can see the 4 bolts holding on the plate.

This is the plate/seat in situ.

If you need them, I will try and get some pics of the box and rack fitted together, just to show what room there is..
do you have any more pictures?
Here you go...

Which box and plate do you have?
That's tempting as then its just on and off when wanted/needed.
I'm liking....
Is it quite stable and safe?
That is a neat idea ....
.... and it looks sillier than my topbox :smt118
It's a Givi E450n with a Givi plate. I would have prefered the squarer box but there weren't any around at the time.

I don't know if you'd want it but I'm selling my sv and getting rid of all the bits, including the topbox and pillion seat mount(both genuine suzuki) next month.
Hmmm intresting!
PM me a picture and price. :-)

Been thinking of doing this myself for a while but don't really have the balls as I will probably mess it up.
FG1, would this box be suitable for your mounting method?

Yes that would be perfect! If you were going to do it, I would say get a spare pillion seat, The cheapest I have seen one for is £25 plus postage on eBay. then you can take the top box and rack off and fit a normal seat when and if you choose, at least you will have the option.
I am gonna get a seat cowl so I will just buy that instead of another seat, Never take passengers so not a problem.
Just worried that box may be a bit pants as it's cheap but I can't really afford to spend a lot
That box is fine! Don't worry about it!
Aslong as you fix it to the pillion seat well then you wont have any problems.
Cool, think I'll take the plunge come pay day. Keep an eye on the for sale section for my soft panniers. :D
Or the wanted section for a spare seat after I bodge the first attempt

Is this not a worry? QUICK RELEASE: This model is equipped with a quick release facility, so once the mounting plate is mounted on to your bike, to quick release the top box from the universal mounting plate, just push the red button at the front of the box to release it from it's plate, so it is so easy, which is a very useful function to have.Sounds like it's not locked to the mounting plate so someone can just push the button & steal your top box + contents? :???: or is the button inside the locked box?
It must be locked on otherwise what is the point in having a key in the first place, will email the seller and check mind.

It is locked, key turns one way to release lid, other way to release entire box

Rear seat, £20. Bargain!
Cheers, shame it's for a curvy though
L3nny, I cant see why it wouldn't work. Be carefull those two bars don't foul anything under the seat. I was carefull in positioning the bolts so that nothing was in the way when the seat was on.
