I got some wheel bearings today. They are the right codes, but they are sealed at both ends. The ones that came out the wheels are only sealed at one end. Does it matter?

no you plonker. mr suzuki saves millions a year not having the other seal added by the bearing manufacturer.

No, you can prize one side off if you are really bothered about it.

Is the rear wheel spacer that goes between the two bearings meant to just wobble around in there?

Also.....

I've got one bearing fitted, but when I put in the long spacer it doesn't sit flush with the other side's bearing seat. It is sticking out too far. Why would that be?

First install the right wheel bearing hard against the inner wall lip, then install the left wheel bearing and spacer, right being the disc side. there should be a verrrrry slight clearance on the left bearing to spacer so as the spacer is ever so slightly loose (you can just slide it about in the hole but not wobble it)

well thats what the workshop manual says.

Well just to be different I installed the left one first. Ooops

It's the diameter of the spacer that I meant was very loose. It terms of length the spacer seems too long just now ??

yes the spacer is meant to be loose between the two bearings in an up and down motion. the reason its to long is that the left bearing sits away from the hub as sorts. you must put the right hand bearing in first. also watch if you have taken both wheels apart as the front has a bearing spacer to. so dont get them mixed up. oh and when it comes to doing the front bearings they have to go in a certain way to.

the reason you have to do the right hand bearing first is because of the brake disc alignment with the caliper hub so the dis sits in between the caliper properly.

Ahh right. I'll need to chap the left bearing out a little then.

Why couldn't they just make the thing the right size

the spacer is there so when you compress all the components together with the spindle it does not move the bearings and helps keep the bearings in the middle of the races. this is why you should not leave to large a space or to small a space with the inner spacer. as i said it should be a slide fit, like feeler gauges on a perfect spark plug size.

did you take your wheel back yet?

Yeh got it back today. They said that there was some grease inside the wheel and when it went in the oven it melted and reacted with the powdercoating. I don't know if I believe that though. I think they just missed a bit

But I've got it back now and it's perfect, so I'm happy :D

Should get the rest of the bearings done tomorrow. I did the sprocket carrier bearing yesterday and the grease in it really stank for some reason.

I didn't have a socket big enough for the front bearings. But found that a R&G fork slider is the perfect size for the bearing :smt115

what ever you do................

do not hit the centre part of the bearing as it will leave markings on the race. which will make the bearing notchie and wear it out prematurely.
