In a fit of ebay madness I bid on a brand new Snap-On toolchest this morning. I thought it would go way over my budget but stuck my bid in just in case I got lucky and thought nothing more of it. It's £1150 worth of brand new toolchest and I've bid £410.

I went out later and splashed out on a complete new set of Held textile riding kit and some other rather pricey bits and bobs without giving it a second thought because I had it in my head I was never going to win the auction.

Came home this evening and settled in watching telly then remembered my bid, checked up and with an hour to go I am still the top bidder. Now I have to wonder if I can justify the toolchest as well as all the other guff I've bought today. As much as I really want and need a new toolchest, I'm half hoping I get outbid.

I wouldnt worry to much, sit back and watch the bidding go nuts in the last few sections of the auction.

I reckon you'll get outbid...

I reckon Lozzo is actually selling the tool chest to pay for the sex change operation he's been visiting the hospital for under the pretense of being ill, but he's too proud to try and drum up support

It's OK mate, we're very open minded here, you can tell us:cool:

Its the 'apple' brand effect, people see 'snap on' and go mad, its a metal box for godsake! they will keep trying justify though lol.

You can retract any bid you make, just enter the item number on the bid retraction form with reason and its instantly retracted.

Just sell it on, plenty of other plonkers willing to buy it

I won it, and I'm actually pretty pleased I did. I've been after one for ages, and was looking to spend between 250 and 400 quid for a good condition used one.

As there is no Mrs Lozzo I can spend my hard earned on what the hell I like, so I didn't retract my bid and carried on. I've bought perfectly good motorcycles for less money, in fact my FS1E when I was a lad was nearly half that price when it was new, my sister paid £250 for it from Coburn and Hughes.

I can afford it, and I like to have the very best when it comes to tools and toolboxes. Some people spend 80 quid on a pair of designer jeans, I spend my money on good quality workshop equipment that earns me money to buy more good quality stuff - I don't see a problem.

I'd be willing to put 20 quid on my toolbox lasting longer than your SV does, and still being worth something in 10 years time.

Let me put it this way - I have a 3 drawer Snap-On box at the moment, it's a smaller but perfectly good immaculate toolbox that I paid 90 quid for from a mechanic at a dealership I used to visit in 1995 (he upgraded to the same type of box I just bought and 90 quid was the Snap-On man's trade in figure), the box was made in 1989. I have just been offered 125 quid for it and I turned him down because it's worth more than that to me.

Yer - fair point on the jeans m8, not that I would by a 80 quid pair, haven't bought a pair in three years lol

You must have some impressive tools to put in that 410 GBP tool box then!

Will it be worth more than an RD YPVS, or SV650 one day then?

Tbh my old man swore by snap-on stuff and if I could afford it I would as well, it's just for me with my budget on anything it's a lot but if you have the cash then absolutely no reason why not.

Mostly Snap-On with Britool, Facom, some Halfords Pro and other quality brands in there too. I don't buy cheap tools that will let me down half way through a job. I used to make my living on the tools in the automotive and bike trades, so they matter to me.

SV650s will never have the same cache that an LC or YPVS has nowadays, so I'd say my tools and boxes are currently easily worth a lot more than a new SV would cost and more than any mint LC or RD I have ever seen for sale.

I'd be willing to put 20 quid on my toolbox lasting longer than your SV does, and still being worth something in 10 years time.It sits in a dry garage having a draw open and shut a few times a day, hardly stressing it like a bike doing thousands of miles in all weathers.

If you have the mpney spend it :)

So why start a thread worrying about buying one in the first place??

Lozzo

I'd never doubt buying the toolbox, just the timing because I spent the best part of 500 quid elsewhere today thinking I'd lose the auction anyway. As it is I didn't lose so I just have to bite the bullet, pay the man and laugh it off.

I think I've got some money, I'm going to buy something, I thought I'd get it cheap, I didn't so I thought I'd tell the .org I can drop a wad easy, no worries.

P.S. i used to import leathers for people, it's exactly the same then as now, nothing changes I tell you.

Enjoy the expensive box. Bravo.

This thread isn't about cash though, is it? It's about different peoples' perceptions of value. £80 on jeans? - nope I never would, cos designer brands don't interest me, I'm very happy with Gap. Or even M&S. But I just paid £60 for an iPod Shuffle rather than the £20 for Comet's own make, cos I think it's far better designed, will do the job well, and it will probably last a lot longer. Same as Lozzo's toolbox:D

hey lozzo id be more willing to put a £20 on the sv m8 .....
im going to get my third bottom box off snap-on in 3 years due to it going rusty, ive had 2 red ones now im going for the black ,the only thing thats good the boxes have the same warranty as the tools ,the only bad thing they have a nice price tag !!!!

I got my 4 draw rolling tool box for free when a local garage closed (no tools included).
it should be a 5 draw but one draw is missing. It does the job I need it for, IE storing my tools in neat and sensible order.
Wish I could afford to spend £400 on a new box, as Lozzo said, His money does what he likes with it.
I hope you have great enjoyment opening and closing and putting your tool in your new box... ;-)

my bro is a car mechanic and he buys quite a lot of snap on stuff. I nearly died when he told me the price of it tho! but do snap on not offer an amazing warranty with all the tools/boxes? if things break they generally get replaced easily/quickly for free etc.... especially if you know the rep who sold you them.

when you think they are the tools you use to make a living, why not buy the best if you can afford?

Richie
24-01-10, 11:40 AM
not on all tools.

For SNAP-ON brand hand tools (other than torque wrenches) and tool storage units, the warranty is a LIFETIME warranty effective as long as you own the tool.

24-01-10, 11:47 AM
as i said a few post up ...... the boxes are under life time warranty, ive had a couple in the last few years getting rusty and the snap-on dealer changes them... ive now changed from the red box and just orderd a black one to see if the paint is better....

Don't worry Lozzo. I come from a family that own snap on chests/rollcabs etc and understand. you got a bargain. Well done. Jealous me.

Lozzo
24-01-10, 12:14 PM
This thread isn't about cash though, is it? It's about different peoples' perceptions of value.

Not entirely. My initial post was about justifying the outlay when I really didn't think I would win the auction. I was so convinced I'd be outid and it would go for more that I went out that afternoon and blew a wad on new textile bike kit. I got caught out and won the auction as well, so had to pay a huge amount out yesterday, more than I really wanted to.

Ok, so I think I got a bargain, but others think it's an obscene amount of money. Trying to justify it to them is a waste of time because they'll never understand, but others don't have a problem with someone buying a Porsche 911 when a VW Polo would suffice.

It's not about the money, it's about the timing and how I got it wrong. I don't regret buying the box or the new bike kit, I just wish I could have spread the cost a bit.
