View Full Version : I hate cleaning the chain

...which is why I rarely do it. But the day has come... it's damn cold out the garage so I keep nipping indoors to warm up and to go for a pee, I could have the fan heater on but no point cos the door's wide open to get rid of the fumes, my hands stink of kerosene, I have black greasy cack over my hands too, it makes a hell of a mess cos I'm brushing the chain with a toothbrush dipped in fuel, and it's mindnumbingly boring. And just to add to the list I keep seeing other little jobs that need doing.

This is a job I'd happily pay for someone else to do:rolleyes:

I like cleaning the chain, I find it therapeutic..
I must be mad.

I like cleaning the chain too.

Parafin, stiff paintbrush and a rag. It's satifying getting all that cack off, it's like grinding paste in your o rings after a while.

If you want ultimate satisfaction, take off your front sprocket cover* and scrape the odd kilogram of cack from out of there.

*assuming other bikes are as susceptible to collecting vast amounts of crap in their as the SV is.

Do it regularly and it isn't a bad job to do Ed ;)

I use foam rather than a paint brush or toothbrush. It doesn't fling everywhere and it's mad quick.
If you get the 4" foam rollers from B&Q or somewhere you can use one to apply the parrafin and one to remove it, very clean and very quick.

That's one area I keep avoiding. Stripped the bike right down to almost nothing this winter and cleaned/degreased everywhere except there lol

Awww... and you looked so cute in it too;)

I have a Scottie. But I didn't clean up before it went on the bike, big mistake, so it was simply oiling all the filth.

Before:

Anyway this is what it looks like now. Not perfect, but it will do:

You're doing it the stupid way. Get a kettenmax

It cleans the chain a lot better and a LOT quicker

Toothbrush? I use old rags. Old manky crap don't flick everywhere then!

True but it will clean it better than a rag could, and in half the time, with half the effort.

A scottoiler may lube for you, but last time I checked it didn't miraculously clean your chain for you too.

I never clean the chain, the Scotoiler oils everywhere that's needed, the rest looks after itself.

I cleaned mine today as well, hate it, i use chain cleaner on rag, then tooth brush and chain cleaner then chain cleaner and rag again, does look good tho now its gold again :D then i run the engine in gear on the paddock stand for a while, spray some wax on leave it running for a while again and it still looks lovely

Don't do that, unless you don't like fingers. (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=139851&highlight=amputated)

Just don't stick your fingers in the moving chain!

No problem with running it on the stand, but give rapidly moving metal parts some respect.

+1

just stop being lazy and revolve the rear wheel by hand. While your there, you can inspect the tyre for anything untoward aswell and you can properly inspect your chain for kinked links that need a bit more attention

Ive always done it and never been close to the chain, the stuff i use provides and extended nozzle as well so no need to get near the chain :D

Ed, that chain is minging!

I do mine every other week, a rag, some WD40 and then some green snot lube painted on with a modified paint brush.

Job done.

I've got one of those.

It's okay, but I found you need a lot of liquid going through, and you'll still probably find the nooks between the links could use the attention of a tooth brush.

I used it a couple of times before deciding it wasn't worth the hassle.

Kev - correction, it was minging. It ain't now, it's nice and shiny. It got rusty about this time last year, attacked by Peak District salt. I got home late that day, and it was freezing, so I didn't bother hosing it down - bad move!! And now I can't get the rust off. I won't neglect it again, it really was a horrid job. I have a Scotty on it but I didn't clean it before fitment, so the Scotty just lubed all the cack. I'm sposed to be going up the Peaks again next weekend, Chesterfield in fact, will make sure it's cleaned off on return home.

Anyway I took P&J for a spin after, it rained on my nice clean bike:rolleyes: and some dozy git pulled out in front of me. Doing 40 in a 40, I had spotted the car before the driver even looked right, and had partly closed the throttle thinking 'self, careful, that car is going to pull out' and the damn thing did too. Couldn't swerve as it's a crossroads, and a car from the right was pulling out and had stopped in the middle of the road. Emergency stop from about 30, so no big deal, but I was a bit shook up, the back was hopping about so I must have overcooked it a little, the offending driver saw me and stopped in the middle of the road, my bike stopped about 2 - 3 metres from him else I'd have hit his door. Car behind me - he was a bit close for comfort too:rolleyes:

Good thing the daytona has good brakes! That was the thing which seriously impressed me with the daytona, better brakes than any other stock bike I've ridden.

It doesn't get minging in the first place with a scotoiler so it doesn't need cleaning.

I've decided that I need a new smaller plate as I don't really want an airbrake. I took it off to clean and OMG it's a fugly piece of tish. So I will opt for something else but that doesn't take the pi$$.

Will have a slogan: 'I'm not riding fast, I'm flying low'
