View Full Version : new apple ipad
just been looking at stuff on the new apple ipad, now i know apple/ipods/iphones/macbooks etc... are all loved and loathed here in equal measures. but is there really a market for this new tablet computer?
the way i see it, its basically a big iphone/ipod touch, so would be marketed that way, maybe something to have sitting about in the living room for surfing the net whilst watching tv. use it to sort out your itunes and pics and stuff from a digital camera.
i can see this being a bit of a flop. i love my iphone and my ipods before that but i just cant see a need for one of these? anyone any opinions on it?

I reckon it'd make a fantastic remote surface for creative workstations, once the apps are out there.
Imagine running a ProTools, Logic or Cubase rig where your plug-ins appear on the iPad so you can manipulate them with touch, rather than a mouse and rather than cluttering up your arrange window.
Yes there are many control surfaces out there already, but I think this is the most elegant and potentially flexible, plus it's wireless.
It's still the first generation of hardware and software- so not all it's potential will be realised for a while yet. But I like the look of it.

I was disappointed when I realised this wasn't an electronic sanitary towel like I first assumed...

i see it as a netbook replacment and therefore a good thing?
Its expensive and limited, I wouldn't mind if it was cheap and limited. But no usb/sd card slot for ease of reading media, photos and other files, no multi-tasking at all, expensive price, no flash support.
A camera would nice as it would make it a great conference tool, but alas no. I think I'll wait till the Lenovo tablet comes out.

But it won't be a netbook replacement, it could have done a lot of usefull things if it has a usb/sd card slot as a easy way to sort photos and other tasks at home. It won't replace the netbook to me, as if your using it to sure the internet the on screen keyboard will make typing difficulty.
I don't see the point of it, but it will probably sell like a hot potato still to all the apple lovers even with its short comings.
If it had those extra things I could have been tempted, but its no use to me the way it is.

I have the smaller, lighter cheaper version of it...and it makes calls.
I think the iPad has a market, but I think its morr of an indicator of whats to come. I reckon in the near future you will see a macpad or propad with all the extra bits n bobs grinch mentioned which will basically replace the laptop range.

One more iToy for the iDiots...
Only useful if you want to proclaim to the world that you're Steve's iBitch
I found it funny when I read there's a basic version, and then one with Wifi and 3g. So the basic one doesn't even have Wifi?! Insane.
I also couldn't quite understand why people thought it was great because you can use it with a stand and a keyboard. Like a computer then.
If someone gave me one for free I don't actually know what I'd do with it.

I certainly wouldnt know what to do with one either. Last time I looked at my sisters ipod touch I just put it back down and grabbed the laptop... (or I ususally go to the PC :D).

You could get a nice laptop for that or 2 or more netbooks.

Indeed, that is crazy... but then thats apple!
you probably get it for the same amount in the US in $ rather than pounds though for $693 its still pretty expensive for a placemat. I like the idea of a slate pc like nokia n900 or archos 5. The idea has been around for a while
You have the choice of the light-medium-heavy flow models, relating to the iPad storage space.

I just did a bit more reading and man it seems a lot restricted, especially for a device that is supposed to replace the netbook...

LOL
It looks like an Iphone that needs Wonka vision
Im sorry but a serious multimedia system needs more Hardrive space
A mobile surfer needs more than just wifi
A serious internet machine must be able to use flash
A work station needs a keyboard
A mobile book needs a better display to make it comfortable to read over long periods
I dont like apple but admire there ability to get the zeitgeist of the moment
Ipod was brilliant as the first mass storage easy to use portable music player.
Iphone first phone to combine filofax internet games and phone into one easy package.
Ipad.................................errrrr oh I know the first technology to put Steve Jobs on the dol queue (hopefully)

these arent rumours, its by design. iPhone OS development guidelines actually state that your app will be closed when another one is launched.
Why they dont provide support for flash I dont know, same for iPhone.
Cambridge council is spending £30K on 42 of them to save paper

It may be possible to bootstrap code via Flash that would allow the installation of non-sanctioned Apps, or even create Flash apps that Steve would not like you running on his, erm your, phone.
So lock out Flash and keep Jailbreaking as the only vector to do what you actually want to, instead of what Steve wants you to be able to, do with your expensive toy.
Right, I have one in my hand ;-)....an iPad that is. Quite a cool little device, much smaller than I expected it to be.
