There's a pic further up the thread where he explains it. Take camera (Canon 5D) out of tank bag with left hand and shoot left handed while holding the camera from above. The wide angle lenses help with the framing, I'm just not sure I'd be very comfortable doing that while leaning into the corners like he is!

Suggest that Americans don't "do" corners at your peril. Seriously, there seems to be this fallacy that America is only straight roads, like when Top Gear went to some twisty road in the Alps and said it would make an American's head explode.

It's a bit stupid isn't it. I'd swap the short patchwork quilt roads round here for a road like those any day of the week.

You would be walking a long way, some of those rides were over 5000 miles long. But I do love hiking the national parks, spend many weekends and vacations each year doing it. But being that its a motorcycle forum I stick to posting mostly motorcycle photos on it.

I'm sure you will have a great time. But be warned, I have a few English riding friends that did just that and wound up moving here. :)

I'm not at all put off by a few odd comments, was bound to happen as my advrider photos have been linked to dozens of forums. What is odd is while my photos have been viewed by hundreds of thousands of riders. The only negative responses I've seen is in this thread.

I'll blame it on the rain. :)

Its a 45 liter Shad. Its waterproof, big enough to hold all I need for a ten day ride. Fully loaded I barely feel it back there. Here its legal to lane split through traffic, so this setup is much better than side bags.

how to screw your handling up on a gixer!

You would be surprised how well the bike handles. I've raced for years, and can tell that raising the bars didn't take away much feel. If fact, it made the bike much easier to handle one handed, and comfortable to ride spirited all day long. The handle bars are set up similar to a Tuono, but this bike handles much better than any Tuono I've ever ridden.

Maybe Clarkson has been visiting all the wrong spots?

I like watching Top Gear, Clarkson cracks me up. Of coarse he picked the worst roads/tracks and people/places in the US to show. I laughed my ass off at his US shows.

There are many large mountain ranges throughout the US. All along the mountain ranges the riding here is excellent. I've done some travel through Europe. I enjoyed the roads through France/Andorra/Spain and Portugal. I've seen pictures and videos of the best roads through the Alps, and watched many Top Gear shows. Given the choice I wouldn't trade the roads here for the roads there. Our roads are every bit as epic and seems we have a lot less traffic and police to deal with. However I am very much looking forward to riding around Europe and the rest of the world for the scenery and culture. You are so lucky to live in a place with so many different countries to ride just a train ride away.

Cheers!

Pete ;)From reading the ADVrider thread, no he doesn't, none at all  - the wind flapping it would cause camera shake, plus he couldn't do rear facing shots. So his $2K camera is ultimately disposable ;)

Some absolutely amazing photos!

Sadly I have to say that the way you obtain them isnt to my way of thinking safe, or something to advocate to other riders. We slate car drivers for driving with one hand using a mobile phone, and yet it is safe for a rider to use one hand to take a photo behind them whilst riding?!

I am quite frankly amazed that you havent had others tell you they think it irresponsible.

That doesn´t take away from the fact that your photos are amazing.

Did you read the bit where he says he used to race & was good at it winning races? He does this photography in order to maintain his interest & concentration focused on the road instead of riding at faster speeds. He also stated that he would be perfectly willing to drop his camera if he needed his left hand to ride.

I'd be more than happy to let his record speak for itself. The only worry I would have is other riders showing off for his photos - but, it's more than likely a regular group he rides with that would know better.

Stu yes I read his post in its entirety.

You can drop a mobile phone too at the drop of a hat. (pun intended) Does that make it safer no.

He used to race on a private race track no doubt, without other cars on the road and without the hazards that public roads bring.

I am sorry but you can not justify riding one handed whilst one hand is behind your back as riding responsibly and saftely. FACT.

I don't see how you can compare what he does to drivers who completely zone out & divert all their attention to their phone conversation.
I maintain my interest & concentration by riding at 100 mph. If you look at his photos you see his speedo at 55 a lot of the time. So who is safer?

In no where in my post did I say he wasnt welcome.

..The photographer himself has said that this is the only place he has come across negative comments. So clearly this point hasnt been raised previously.

Gosh, clearly because you like someones photos, allows you to also ignore the fact that they might have obtained them whilst putting others on the road at risk.

Stu I think you are being a little petulant over my points, I raised a comparison that I know is a bone of contention with most bikers to show another point of view. A comparison that shows a driver being restricted due to the operation of something other than the car with the other hand.

However I dont want to create a bad vibe here, and so will unsubscribe to the thread.

As has already been said, the photos are amazing and some fantastic scenery there too.

Thanks for checking them out again, but sorry, had to take them down for now. My photo hosting site complained about too much traffic. (want to charge me more money for unlimited account) Seems the photos are making the global rounds again being posted on hundreds of moto forums, and now being linked all across facebook. Over 4 million unique views to date. Yikes!

I am sorry but you can not justify riding one handed whilst one hand is behind your back as riding responsibly and saftely. FACT.

I never claimed to be safe or responsible. Dangerous and Funloving should be my middle name, but it wont fit on my drivers license.

From time to time, I see a lot of traffic on my photo hosting site. I take a peek to see where its coming from and get a kick out of reading what is being said about the photos, rides, and roads in my country. Example, its very cool I can hit google translate, and see what the Russians, Japanese or Greek have to say. Overall its been a very positive experience. Making me want to travel to these countries and ride with these fun loving people. (In Italy, the women want to have my babies. :D)

I don't normally post on these forums, but find your country interesting. It is the only one where people are so worried about my safety, that they call me things like idiot, and feel the need to point out what I do is very dangerous and stupid.

Um, hello... riding motorbikes is dangerous. Especially having fun on the sporty kind. I can ride better one handed than 99% of my friends two handed. Chances are I can ride ride better one handed than 99% of your friends as well. This includes braking and in emergency situations. I even enjoy one handed stoppies and cracking mile long one handed wheelies. Not every ones riding talent is equal. Does this mean those who can not as well as me one handed, shroud be deemed unsafe to ride? Are they idiots for swinging a leg over a motorcycle?

One of my closest friends is missing his left arm from an auto racing accident. Despite riding one handed last 15 years. He is one of the best moto riders I know on street, track, and dirt. I'm curious... In your opinion, should he be allowed to ride motos on the street?

I bet I can out ride, out turn, out stop you, riding one handed while you use both. Does this make you a more dangerous rider than me?

I knew the UK was a nanny state, but really you should be ashamed of yourselves. Women bitching. Men acting like little ninnies. How do the real men living there put up with this crap? If only you knew how bad you look compared to the rest of the world.

Do yourselves a favor. Grow a sack. Take the sticks out of your butt. Tell the worried women and ninnies to STFU. Build some rifles, shoot out street cameras watching your every move. Shoot your politicians. Build a flamethrower. Burn your nanny state to the ground. Start from scratch before its too late, and all your balls are all clamped in a vice for good.

Remember... dangerous deeds are good for society, as they weed out the stupid and inept. A super safe ninny country is a country overrun.

Some friendly advice from across the pond. :D

Yikes!

Eecks... Sorry for your hassle, but your photos are too great to be un-shown.

as a person Sorry, as a biker No... you give us the inspiration to get out there pal and ride and for that I =D> you... :0)

Oh, and thanks for the kind words and checking out the photos.

=D>=D>=D>=D>=D>

well said that man.

but i'm afraid that it would never happen and the reason being that most people in the UK are now sheep and subdued. they think more material value of life rather than life. even if the people in the UK actually grew a pair and got up and done something i'm afraid to say that the politicians would never let it happen and would call in the army rather than let the public have their own way.

it costs so much to live here that people are scared to do anything that would endanger the way they live so they put up with the politicians shifting us up the jacksy.

keep up the good work as your photos are an inspiration, no matter how you capture them and the more dangerous the better :smt045 :D

may i take this opportunity to say a huge thank you for posting such fantastic eye candy.

Bikers preaching about safety is so ironic :D
