I'd like to get my wheels made into gloss black. Anybody know where, and for how much I can get this done?

Altermira (sp?) which is in reading (i think), repairs and sprays bike parts, my brother has always gone to them when he has come off in the past, were very affordable from what i remember can't give a figure though. probably looking a hundred or two for wheel being painted.
hope that was of atleast some help :smt083

they would most likely powered coat not spray, if they advised spraying I'd be i'd be looking elsewhere ....... i sprayed mine but that's because i don't have a big oven :)

Did you just rattle-can spray it? Did it work well?

i stripped them down to the metal, polished the polished bit, masked off, primed, sprayed then lacquered

Try over at Farley Customs. I think he does powder coating, or he could advise. However hes not always quick and budget for new bearings.

That looks so pro! How do you strip it down to the metal? Pain thinner? That looks really good man, exactly what I want! How did you get them off too?

+1 asking at places always gives good results, especially custom build places

Wideboy, Sorry, I meant the tyres and shizz.. How much did you spend over all?
Sensai, I will check them out and pop the question. I'd rather mimic wideboy if it's cheaper.

the front didn't have one on and the rear was farked so i just did it all with the tyre on then got a new set put on........ cant remember how much i paid, no more than 15 quid for tin of paint, primer and i had some petrol resistant lacquer laying about, 2 part lacquer (the stuff your tank is lacquered in) would be more resistant to shiz but it gives of cyanide when you spray it so its very bad
not one to put a downer on the whole thing but its not easy. takes alot of patients, need to be methodical

Tain't gonna be as expensive as that for powder coat, about £45 per wheel, but you must take the bearings out.

Once I've taken the bearings out, I have to get new one's right? How much are they, and are they easily available?

^ about £12 for 2 (fronts)
you hit them out with a hammer and a long screw driver (from behind) and you hit them in to lol but you must read how to get them in its verry important

Wemoto or a bearing factors (shop) just quote the bearing number.
If you're carefully you might get away with reusing the old bearings, but it requires careful extraction, so warm the hub with a hot air gun or boiling water (might not work) and tap the outside edges of the bearing evenly.
But with all the stuff the wheels have to put up with, the bearings are probably going to be hard to remove without damaging them

Have you tried JHS in Keynsham?

Do I need to knock out all 5 bearings (sprocket carrier bearing too?)
I haven't tried anywhere yet, I think I will call places tomorrow and ask. So Powder Coating appears to be cheaper. Does it look as nice? I would have gotten a shiny black if painted.
Will powder coating hide all the muck as well as painting would?
Altermira; JHS; and Farley were all recommended. Any others?

Yes, if you want them powder coated, yes it looks as nice and is tough, but does tend to chip
They clean the wheels up before applying the powder coat:rolleyes:, so the finish is excellent

as saod bearings can be popped out without damaging them if your carefull
you will have to take the bearings out of the sprocket hub if you want that done aswell
when you put the new ones in use a block of wood that covers the hole face of the bearing, that way you knock the bearing in square and your spreading the pressure of the hammer hit equally, if you use a flat head screw driver to put them in you will damage the runners

Cool, thanks, Haynes says the same. Looking at the wheel, why would I need to take out the bearings if I paint it? What is the fault in just covering them up well?

No, just mask them up, to stop the paint getting where it shouldn't

Ah, so why would I ever need to replace the bearings?

you don't have to but you might damage them taking them out so it might be worth buying a set, you only need to remove them if your getting the wheels powder coated as they will put the wheels in an oven and anything non metal i.e. you tyre valves ect will melt, the bearings have plastic seals

Ahhhh! I think I'm alright then! I'm on laquering stage now, 2 coats down. I've still got to the the front wheel, gotta figure out how I'm going to keep the bike up (I have read ways of doing so, just must decide) Or to save the hassle, I might just get the front wheel done professionally.. I don't THINK I've ruined the bearings, but what should I look out for when riding the bike again afterwards?

i take it you have a paddock stand, when the bike is on the paddock stand you can use a car jack under the motor to lift the front off the ground. Takes a bit of trial and error to find the balance point but its perfectly safe, I've had the bike left on one for over a month with no front end or wheels...... place a cloth or soemthing on the jack plate otherwise you'll scratch the engine AND!! the balance point should be just behind teh oil filter so be careful you don't crush it
the bearings may be ok if you spray over them as they're sealed but its still not advised to do so . A good habit to start is to grease the bearings and spindle every time you have the wheels off, just remember how fast they spin ect on motorways  best to keep them greased
