View Full Version : Isn't Holyhead a dump!

I'm in Holyhead Magistrates court today. Easy morning drive across Wales and it's sunny.
However, no amount of sun can hide the fact that Holyhead is a dump! It's like going back to the '70s.
Get me out of here, I feel like my hair is changing to a mullett as I type.

Pete ;)

Its like most ferry ports, just a transit place for people going in and out of the country.

Dover, Harwich, Hull, Newhaven, Portsmouth, Immingham none are particularly nice

All the nice areas are outside the main towns

Nah, Holyhead is much worse than other ferry port towns I've been to. It is a ****hole, no question! It's one of those places blighted by loss of industries, unemployment and all that brings, it appears to be on a downward spiral. It really does not help that the county council is in 'special measures' and hasn't got a clue!

EDIT: Pete if you are able, call in for a cuppa.

sh*thole it is - no doubt about it! Was forced to travel there twice for a recruitment open day when they were closing down the aluminium smelter there and I needed to "poach" some experienced engineers. First time the weather was vile and I only had a couple of hours of free time to have a nosey around so gave the place the benefit of a doubt. Next time it was nice and sunny and after a quick wonder I can fully confirm the place is one of the most boring places I've ever visited

If you'd only just gone a mile or two to the left... North Stack, which overlooks the ferry port, is a lovely place for a hike. Leave your car in the Nature Reserve car park, walk up North Stack and then round the coast line to South Stack and the RSPB reserve. Complete the circle and you'll have had a nice day if the weather was kind.

Lots of pretty bays and rock pools to splash about it too just another few miles further round the coast.

If you avoid Holyhead and Llanfair....thingy-thingy the Island is a nice relaxing place for a holiday. Went there last year and really enjoyed it. Lovely cycle routes on the east coast too.

No mate, the roads and scenery to get there are top. Just time your arrival to ride straight through and onto your ferry! Fine to pass through, just don't spend any time there.

For over 250 miles travelled, I was in the box for around sixty seconds. What a waste of time.

Ed, close you eyes

Solicitors; sack of sh*te!

Some years ago i was getting the fast ferry to Dun Laoghaire and because I wasn't there 30 mins before sailing - I was too used to turning up at Plymouth with only 10 mins to go - the buggers wouldn't let us on the ship, even though the linkspan was still down. So we had to wait 4 hours in Holyhead for the next one. There wasn't even anywhere to go for a coffee. The place really is dire, it's so so sad. It desperately needs some investment.

I knew that Holyhead was nice because when I was an articled clerk the firm I worked for used to act for Sea Containers, now part of Stena line. And Sea Containers owned the port, and all the land around it, and I used the title deeds extensively - lovely 1840s parchment, the port grew rapidly with teh railways. In fact I registered the title. So we set off around the coast, just as Sir trev suggests, and it really is spectacular. Just a shame that nobody has ever thought about the town.

How come a Manc cop ends up in court in darkest, deepest Wales?

Must have raised a few eyebrows GMP livery all the way on Anglesey

Alleged offence occurred in Wales, Owner of vehicle lives in GMP. Wales send a file to us to interview the driver, which I did.

Can you imagine my evidence?

Not exactly key was it!

Pete ;)

Oh, and it was a GPS tracked silver Zafira 0.9tdi. No, that's not a typo, I have more guts than that car.

Met a bloke at holyhead when I sold my mountain bike, as a fairwell to the bike and with some time to spare I had a little play along the bridge and pathway towards the departure lounge. I'd been in Holyhead less than 10mins before I was told off by a handful of old people and then a bobby. Never much liked the place after that, nor that it cost me a fortune to park the car no where near where I needed to be :(

Why the need to travel so far bpete?

Ignore the above you've just covered it.

I suppose the GPS is simply to stop you thrashing the engine into an early grave.

Hmmm nice to know even a 20 year old Lada Riva could outrun GMP traffic these days.

And as for solicitors being sh*te, well yes, I am afraid I clobbered someone in Hereford County Court this morning. A former client in fact, he hadn't paid my very reasonable bill. I think he wished he hadn't applied to set aside my judgement;)

Yeah, was there in November (first time backin about 15 years) for work and couldn't wait to leave. I finally understood why all the passenger used to complain when the train was late and they missed the ferry!
