My dad needs a new tv. He struggles to see the old 28" CRT we have just now. The max he wants to spend is £500. He'll mainly be watching football and films on it.

I am looking at the Curry's site and they have two 42" LG's for £499. A plasma (http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0765026673.126546094 1@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccladejigglldkcflgceggdhhmdgmi.0&page=Product&fm=11&sm=0&tm=3&sku=854909&category_oid=) and a LCD (http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0765026673.126546094 1@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccladejigglldkcflgceggdhhmdgmi.0&page=Product&fm=11&sm=0&tm=3&sku=141574&category_oid=-34810). The plasma seems to be miles ahead in terms of spec. Is there a downside to it?

Are there any other ones I should look at? The panasonic's seem to be too expensive for a 42"

I just got an LG 1080p thing think it was an LH4000 or something.
Very happy with it paid under £400 though so maybe he's after something higher spec. Would recommend an LG (they also come with 2years warranty as standard). Good picture, nice looking thing, good on the ps3 too.
Heard bad things about samsung, was also looking at toshiba but I know for a fact they've moved their screen production from sweden (I think) to asia recently and have again heard bad things.

LCD = motion blur but cheep to run

Plasma = leccy eater but the better picture

watch some football, fast moving sports and you will see what i mean.

ok so the newer LCD's aren't as bad as they were a couple of years ago, and the plasmas have come a long way in reliability. if you do decide get a decent brand like Samsung, sony, pioneer for LCD or Panasonic for plasma.

i personally prefer Plasma, but having seen my mates new LED i think both LCD and Plasma are well dated now. but like all new technology it was blooooody expensive.

try this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-37RV635D-37-inch-Widescreen-Freeview/dp/B001TUYQ50/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1265483635&sr=8-3-spell

its a 37" - needs a HD input to get the best out of it the normal picture is not the best, but its a good spec tv for the price

Richer sounds seem to have the same LCD £100 cheaper (unless I'm missing something?)

Yeh that looks better because it's 1080P

This is confusing me though. Why is this one £100 more

If you can wait until XMAS - get a standby set incase his goes pop from freecycle or local free-ads.

The first gen 3DTVs (which will be normal TVs as well) will be hitting the stores at reasonable prices shortly - They should tumble towards Christmas, and become about your £500 mark around XMAS/January sales 2011. I know that if you wait, you can wait forever, but in this case it may be a set that will last a while.

Good luck with whatever you decide - buying TVs is always a minefield of second guessing what is coming next.

That's all well and good but how many shows are going to be in 3D? HD has been around for 5 years and there is still hardly any HD output broadcast.

Also I find if you buy the first generation of a new technology you are basically taking part in the final stage of testing for the manufacturer.

Darren, does your Dad actually have any HD devices such as Sky HD or a Blu Ray player? If not then don't worry about 1080p and if his eyesight isn't so good he's not likley to notice the difference between 720 and 1080. I have pretty good eyesight and I cant.

I found my tv on richersounds trouble is they have trouble getting stock for the stuff they advertize :( I ended up buying from currys but they price matched richersounds and I collected it rather than paying £25 delivery, jobs a good'n :) I got the 42" lg LCD 1080 for £519 it's a great telly :)

He's not bothered about 3D stuff and doesn't have any HD stuff at the moment, but I think he might be persuaded to get a blue ray player eventually, so might as well get full hd if it's possible

Would be worth getting full hd stuff, even if he doesn't own any hd stuff at the moment.

Good , always good to have more than one piece of feedback on the table.

If we're playing that game of anecdotal evidence to support how good the whole brand is
My big LG TV has broke after 5ish years & I've had to go back to my Sony that is 12 yrs old.

Our old sony CRT's picture went pink after 13 years

:p

Problem is you hear good and bad about every brand (for example I've read not to touch sony these days now too). I'd be tempted to just go for whatever you can get a good price on, it'll do you for atleast 5 years and at £500 I wouldn't be crying about it if it popped.
I'd be more upset if I bought a top of the range and sold it a year later losing loads of money.

going over 32" plasma is the way to go :thumleft:
And much better for Football too as you don't get motion blur.
which on a cheap 42" LCD you will most defiantly suffer.

Panasonic TVs are quality. that's why they are more ;)

ive had the toshiba for a few weeks now and just hooked it up to HD and the picture is very good for a cheap(relatively) 37" lcd, i had it next to my samsung once in the front room and the picture was probably better. Its the little details that go along way for me, like the way the toshiba sign on the front lights up when you turn it on and fades when you turn it off. But all in all for £415 its a dam good tv, especially when the next 37" was was around £500
