I recently bought 4l of the stuff for bike cleaning.

I'm now thinking it's bloody foolish to keep in the flat. It's an old Victorian building so potentially a massive fire risk. Even if the risk from light switches etc are low (it's under the bathroom sink and I don't smoke), the fumes aren't much fun.

I expect the landlord would have a fit if he found out I had it indoors...

I guess leaving it in the garden is irresponsible as any fule could get their hands on it.

I also don't have access to sheds.

So- do I just find a sealed container to store the bottle in or just hand it on to someone else?

Seems a shame to get rid as it's proved cheaper and better than branded products.

Whatever container it came in, or a petrol can.

I just keep 5L under the sink in the kitchen. Never even thought about it as being an issue.

Paraffin is less flammable than white spirit/turpentine substitute and everyone keeps a bottle of that kicking about!

As above it is not nearly as dangerous as other spirits etc, similar to having 100% alcohol about, no reason not to have it in the house.

It's probably little different in flammability to cooking oil.

Paraffin burners usually have a sort of fuel preheater arrangement so once it's up and running it's actually vapour which is burning, getting them going on the liquid is often quite laborious.

I keep mine next to the 5L can of paint thinners.....................

True, but cooking oil doesn't give off half the fumes that paraffin does.

Though most of the bike products I have are flammable too. But they are sealed better.

Why is it smelling, the cans you get it in tend to be pretty good. Have you spilled some pouring it out?

Don't know- maybe some residual leakage when it was packed. I did spill some when I decanted into a spray mister, but it was quite smelly before that. I wiped the spill up and left windows open for therest of the day..

I may srreptitiously see if the landlord has somewhere to store that I can access- he owns most of the road and there are a couple of garages about...
