Glad I'm not on drugs! That was just freakishly geometrical. Had to stop after a couple of mins - marches do my frickin' rig. And did they nick their hats off the Orange Order?
Army folks aside this is a pretty std thing for marching bands. There are even competitions globally :)
Where I come from there is a big music history especially through marching bands and you get to see this thing every Xmas and Easter plus sometimes during the summer for the tourists.

I'm guessing that you're too young to remember the 'old days' of The Royal Tournanment when our forces did much the same thing (as well as other more military things such as the Gun Running competition) & were rightly admired for the precision they achieved ?
If you really think it makes the ". . . military look like a joke . . ." then I suggest you find a member of the RAF Regiment, Royal Marines or perhaps the Blues & Royal Mounted Regiment and tell them that.
P.S. if you do decide to take up the option in para 3 may I suggest that you have a very fast car with its engine running waiting nearby ?!!

Bloody fantastic.
And as for it making the military look like a joke......please explain your reasoning..
Discipline springs to mind here. The ability to learn long complicated moves is impressive.
I had better stop now as I think I could de rail this thread for wanting to big up the military.
And just to clarify that marching is an addition to the duties of our troops, QCS were recently in Afghanistan.
They can carry out their "tactical" role superbly and still amaze us with their "ceremonial" duties.
Take a look at them proving that they are amongst the worlds finest.

If you took a little bit of time to read any of Darren's posts you'll find he has very little good to say about anything, so it's not worth the bother explaining.

Yes how dare he belittle the military, they should kick his f***in head in for questioning how much intelligence it takes to march up and down a square :smt044

it is acutally not that hard to do (with as said disiplined blokes) its actually easier with music as a que, doing it without is far harder
and for the uninformed square bashing comes from taking positions in firing/fighting lines from old style war strategy (think waterloo, or the roman legions)
Speirs .. that was amazing my fire poi has nothing on those flaming drumsticks!!! WOW oh WOW

Didn't mean to offend anyone, that is just how I see it.
It is impressive and obviously takes a LOT of time and practise. But isn't there more important things they could be doing with their time

There's plenty of stuff which money could be 'better spent on' if you're Piers Morgan or another type of man-eating blood sucker but if you took all the 'pointless' **** out of public spending we'd end up with... well, too many bored trumpet players i suppose.
Drums bored me but the marching Norwegians were sweeeeet :D

I can only assume that your use of the word "your" in the relply quoted above refers to the fact that you believe I am or have been a military type person ?
Sorry to disillusion you, but I am not, nor ever have been - deosn't stop me appreciating the display though.

Nono, facts are in no way important to any comments made. You sprang to the defence of square bashing so quickly I automatically presumed you the sort to engage in military fairy type business at weekends.
If you are not military how do you know darren should be in fear of violence if he was to announce to 3 para that square bashing is a waste of time?
Only time I met any paras they were too busy playing freckle and downing vast amounts of lager to give anyone a kicking
Actually your post made me laugh just like when dickyticker there was defending council estates a while ago:
someone: council estates are sh*tholes full of violent thick skulled inbred scum
dicky: no they aren't
someone: yes they are
dicky: If you said that in a council estate they'd kick the sh*t out of you!
Maybe I'm easily amused by people blowing holes in their own arguements :smt042

Are you incapable of putting a sentence together without using belittling or offensive phraseology ?

I have had friends in all branches of the military throughout my life & currently work with quite a few.

You see - you're a victim of your own predjudices. Just because someone is a Para doesn't mean that they are some mindless automaton bent on indiscriminate violence. However, I think (judging from the Paras that I've met over the years) that if you'd talked about 'Military fairy type business' to them they might have stopped drinking just long enough to put you straight.

Maybe you're just an argumentative muppet who thinks himself big and clever by insulting others ?

See how you've kinda undermined your own point there? You imply that someone is going to get a kicking and then accuse me of thinking all squaddies are violent bullies! :smt042
And yes I love an argument on forum, it is only sport around here. Keeps the brain active.
Are you incapable of putting a sentence together without using belittling or offensive phraseology ?
Are you incapable of having the p*ss taken without getting your panties in a knot? [-(
Maybe you're just an argumentative muppet who thinks himself big and clever by insulting others ?
Do I even need to comment on where you've undermined your point there too? :smt109
P.S the time I refer to is literally the only time I met any paras, it is not indicative of any prejudices, it is simply my recollection of one event where in my humble opinion they were actually too busy with the actions in question to commit any acts of violence.

Search the American Marines silent drill or alike, there's one which they do half-time of a b-ball match, which is the best I've ever seen

That is really impressive, especially the bayonet throw three lines behind them and the Bruce lee character doing a superfast rifle twirl! I love the sounds all in unison too.

It is impressive, but if you ignore "tradition" it's just totally random.
I understand the theory behind the discipline, but lots of things require discipline, and I'm sure even the most stern defender of marching and twirling and stamping would raise an eyebrow if they instead performed a ballet, an opera, or rhythmic gymnastics. All of which require discipline. So does standing still.
It has nothing to do with the modern military imo, it's just show-business.
