View Full Version : Insuring an additional bike ...
I'm looking at buying another bike, and once I have it I'll be selling the SV .. (anyone interested ?? :D)
Anyway, I need to insure the new bike whilst I still have the SV !!
Whats the best way ??
Before I have paid extra for an additional bike to be added to a policy, and then when I've gone to remove one of them, 'no refund can be given' ... complete con ....
So, 2 policies ??
Worst case, I can simple switch the policy over, and store the SV in the garage, with no insurance til its sold !!
How would you do it ??

Firstly, check that your current policy will allow you to insure a 2nd bike - mine wouldn't.
Also, check that you can switch bike. They may make you cancel the policy and take out a new one and then you'd lose any no claims discount accrued through the year.
Lastly, if you do decide to get 2 separate policies, remember that NCD can only be used on one bike at a time...so your 2nd policy would have to be based on zero NCD.

When I bought my GSXR I just added it to the SV Policy, it only had 2 or 3 months left to run anyway.
Then I switched insurance companies to ebike who do multibike insurance. I insured the GSXR as the first bike on the policy and then added the SV to it for £20 or so as an admin fee.
If you cancel your existing and start again you might find you loose a years NCB which might come in handy later on.
Running two bike policies is a complete pain in the butt, also the 2nd policy you start, you will end up starting again NCB so its like starting from scratch again...

Depending on your insurer though they can offer a hand over period. Like I had a clio and bought a 106 so I insured the 106 and the company said I'd still be allowed a fortnight on the Clio to give me time to sell it. Whacked it on the trader/ebay and it was gone before the end of the fortnight. No need to 2 policys no need for messing around the no claims carried on accumulating and everything.
Insurers won't insure a second bike .......... or even the bike I'm looking at (an ER6F for gods sake .... not that much different to an SV, surely ??) , so its a case of new policy, or 2nd policy .... either way I'll get lumber once, twice or maybe more with cancel/change fees ..
Bike insurance is a joke ... never had problems with car insurance like this !!
I'll get it sorted, but they do swindle the money out of you !! :-(
So, insurance required ... who is everyone with ??

Carol Nash do multi bike policy. Mine are on one, don't have to stop at two bikes, you can add more and more and more ;-)

Multi-bike policies are great. It only cost me about £30 to add a Dullville (fully comp) to my Speed Triple policy.
Got a couple insured with MCE. Been with them ages. BUT
CHECK THE PAPERWORK
and get them to read back the details you've given them.
and
Even if they've read everything back correctly...
CHECK THE PAPERWORK
Currently I'm at the point where if they get it right 1st time it's a pleasent surprise.
