I personally think it should be stopped every where in life or anything else showing affection.....for the whole year, for every one.

Why would you want to stop anything that shows affection?

Bah humbug!
And this is where the men jump in and say "BAH Valentine, I don't need an over commercialised day to feel pressured into buying something for the other half to show her shes loved"
BELIEVE ME - you ferking do!!! We are women, we like surprises, we like knowing you thought about us and put some effort into it.
My man does the whole "I don't need Valentines Day" routine but he never buys flowers or chocolates or anything romantic during the year so I don't see his arguement. If sunday rolls around and he hasn't put some effort in this year, there will be blood. Oh yes there will ....... BLOOD!!!!
:D :D :D :D :D

I am not good at taking compliments and it just weirded me out. I didn't have a tantrum with him, that would have been mean and ungrateful but I did have a tantrum at home.
Sunday - is it, and it's one of my daughters birthdays as well, at least I can remember that date, if not day, at least I can remember that date for that one, just don't ask me to remember my wedding anniversary or the birthdays for the rest of the kids, all I know is it's ten long hard, long, soooo long years, there's no end in sight.
I did once see light at the end of the tunnel and then realised it was the ball and chain in a train coming to run me over.
And they say love has gone out of this world. Now where's the nearest cheap dozen roses, ah yer, Tesco, 5 quid for twelve, sorted - I'm a romantic god ;-)

For my first Valentines day with Mr VT he set up all the twinkly red lights around the flat, he put a timer on so that they would go off in time for me to see them when I got home from work.
There were red roses everywhere and later when he got home he cooked me a crayfish thermadore and we had a sit down candlelight dinner.
I bought him a minature lion head lop eared rabbit as a suprise, which he named 'Stitch' after his obsession with some cartoon thingy and later we bought a friend for him called....yep Lilo.
Last year we spoiled each other too and this year we are going to Paris as a combination for his birthday and Valentines day :)
I love romance, suprises and love

Sunday.... IAM ride in the morning (to see if I fancy doing the training), board games club in the afternoon. Is it any surprise I'm not expecting any Valentines Day cards!
Keith.
I've never celebrated Valentine's day, ever.
My girlfriend last year understood this, although she was a little disappointed. So we did nothing on Valentine's day and I spoiled her with surprises on February 15th instead.
board games club in the afternoon.

??
same as amanda if i didnt do anything, there would be blood, plus it was the day me and the missus offically started going ouy when we were going through the dating bit. so its gonna be a cheap one cause i am taking her on holiday for her birthday in two weeks but, she'll be happy. :thumleft:

I agree with the article, it is an emotional trauma being rejected. It ruins people. Last night for instance, I'd been building myself up to go and talk to this girl, turn my back for two minutes and bang, another bloke all over her, dreams shattered!

I'm not personally fussed about Valentine's Day, but my wife likes it and it's one of the 2 days of the year (this and her Birthday) I can show my appreciation for her (and just her - not like Xmas etc) without raising any suspicion that I've done something wrong ;)
She'll be getting breakfast in bed, we'll go for a stroll in the countryside in the afternoon, and I've booked us for dinner in a nice village pub/restaurant nearby. That, a card, and a bunch of tulips and she'll be thrilled. If it makes her happy then that's good enough reason for me.
On the original post linky thing, what annoys me is that we feel we need to shield our kids from real life. Learning to deal with it is part of growing up.
They'll be wearing ear plugs next in case somebody calls them names. Jeez.

i like valentines day, but its gotta be mutual. you cant just expect t be given roses/chocolates/a card/whatever and do nothing in return. i usually do something that takes a lot of effort, just cos its the one time of year im allowed to be romantic to a boy and he cant go "pfft" and put the football on

I'll send you one, I'm nice like that
I'm with VT on this one and i enjoy romancing the ladies :P.
This year it'll be chocolates in the shape of a heart, a mug with pink floyd logos on it and a DVD of Dorian Gray. Also i'll be cooking Hobgoblin Steak and Ale pie!
Sadly i dont have VT's kinda money, and no doubt i'll get nothing from sib this yr!
Gets me tho is women always want to be treated but never give nething back. The best my ex's always managed was to buy some new underwear (guess where that went!), which is grand but not really ne effort!
Neway sounds like it'll be a good time VT!

I know it well:
"I got you some flowers"
"Why? What have you done? You've done something haven't you?"
"No, I just thought that you'd like flowers"
"You're hiding something? What have you been up to?"
This goes on for several minutes until I convince her that I really haven't done anything (or she gives up and carries on privately believing that I have)

This is because you don't do it often enough!!! That way if you did it quite often and you really did do something wrong she would be even less suspicious.

But if I gave her flowers quite often, then she'd come to expect them and they wouldn't be something special. Male = can't win.
Flowers are always special if given with passion and sincerity!
Male = can't win.
lol, to be fair though the missus always loves them either way.

Flowers?
Never understood them. I see it as: here is a token of my love; something that while looks beautiful now can only wither and die.

With a gift of flowers, you know that someone is thinking of you right now, this very minute. It's the memory of the gift and the emotions that last forever. Winston Churchill once said "You make a living by what you get, You make a life by what you give."

Of course you would think that. If you were into flowers, rather than chocolate, you'd be called the Aspidistra Kid, or something.

The memory that someone destroyed something beautiful just to present it to you as a token to win your affections?
And Gregg Alexander once said "You only get what you give" aren't quotes wonderful.

That's why Im not a fan of cut flowers, Mr VT knows to buy me potted roses so that I can put them in my garden.
For Christmas 2008 he drove nearly 100 miles round trip to collect a rose that was cultivated with my name.

My man can't be with me this weekend but he is coming over for my birthday and is whisking me away for four days to a fancy hotel in Scotland as a combined valentines/birthday present :D
As for the article?
It's ridiculous, by over protecting kids feelings like this - in my opinion - it just delays them from getting used to life.
Yes kids are to be protected but from the horrific side of life not mundane things like not getting valentines cards ffs!
