How horrible. Not letting their kids "mix" with other kids. Jeez, they're only kids, let 'em play with other kids down the park.
There are enough kids in their "Community" to mix with anyway. After all it seems thats their life ... marriage, sex, kids! Circle of life. No need for jobs, tax, etc

Other than the extravagant dress sense, I didn't think they seemed that outrageous or 'wrong' so to speak.
Blokes seem to have it easy though - basically just pick a wife by the sounds of it, because all the girls are so desperate for a bit of freedom!

Watched the porgramme. Apart from the outrageous dress-sense they seemed okay to me. Just getting on with their lives. But yeah, we didn't see all that they get up to. Not that long ago that one of the local travellers threatened me with a pitchfork!

Ok, dresses were a bit on the extravagant side and a tad loud but i was very surprised at the way the young girls conducted themselves.
How many teenagers these days have the same morals as these girls?
No clubbing, drinking or frolicking with the other sex before marriage.
Our society could actually learn alot from that.
How many virgin brides were there on here?
Respect to them i say!

I've been in close contact with "travellers" several times (my parents live in a nice rural area).
When they were camping there (on a public carpark), they left rubbish, crimes went on the up (minor ones maybe but they went up), destroyed local stuff. Generally they were criminals yet no one did anything about it.
Plus if i remember on the Pennine Massive theres a thread on the applby horse fair where they were throwing stones at bikers (who were riding) cos the horses didnt like the noise.
Imho the people on this show are just fairly strict catholics with all but arranged marriages. Married at 16 (not hard to be a virgin at 16 really)??! Yea cos theres yer bloke/girl yer going to be with for life. Also stereotyping to hell (women stay at home pop out babies and do nothing the man works wtf is this the dark ages?!!).
Seems to me they werent travelling and they werent pleasant people (notice the one bloke was a bare knuckle figther for a career friendly much).

My experiences may be limited but enough that if it weren't for the police having some silly ideas we may have been a little more forthright about asking them politely to leave.
They moved onto a landfill site about a mile away, they were here less than a month, within that month something like 5 houses were burgled on our road alone. Funny that there have been only 2 attempts at breaking and entering in the previous 10 years.
Moved onto the yard of one of my Dads units, we followed them round the local tescos while they brazenly shoplifted 2 trolleys full of stuff. That was quite a lark but there you go. They were only there 3 days but that was enough for numerous acts of vandalism around the industrial estate and the car park left as basically an open sewer.
They were there 3 days because one of them (the retarded f*ck) assaulted my Dad in front of about 15 coppers.
They are animals. If they move near you, buy a crossbow, wang a few bolts in the general direction. If everyone does that then they'll get the hint. It is the only language they understand, make no mistake they no the law like a magistrate, but only with regard to sailing close to it. Literally a parasite, sucking blood from whatever half decent society they attach to...

I've had alot of dealings with traveller related crimes, pretty much once a week we'd get called out to stolen cars that were torched within walking distance of their site, didn't take a profeesor to work out who was responsible for it.
Also got to know one of the main men in the site who wasn't the brightest star in the sky but was very handy with his fists and that's how he used to make a living. Is there anything wrong with that? isn't it the same as a boxer/cage fighter? If you've got a talent that can earn you money then why not exploit it.
He openly admitted he couldn't read or write properly and it was down to his up bringing and from an early age he learnt to "look after" himself.
If you want extravagent expensive weddings then Malta is the place to go.
I really can't believe the amount of money my cousins wasted on their weddings, when they really needed the money to buy a decent place to live. One of them had 3 cars for the bride, yes, just for the bride - The main car which I think was a Roller, then a Roller Convertible on standby just in case the weather was mild enough to drive with the top down, and a third car (Mercedes S class) on standby just in case the other two broke down.

Yea the problem is nearly everyones experience with gypos is bad. Like you pointed out they dont educate themselves to a great degree. They dont contribute to society and activately steal/make it worse for others. Ok so you can fight, well be a boxer or something that doesnt inflict so much damage (i dont like boxing but hey ho). When they asked that dress maker how much to dresses cost she had me sold that they would kill her if she told. That bare knuckle figther bloke wouldnt let his daugther marry "country folk" (aka normal sane englishmen), why not? My parents are catholic but they dont force their beliefs on me or my sister.
The stereo type of liverpool is steal yer hub caps if they aint nailed on etc. yet i know loads of people from liverpool who are great only one was abit dodgy. Yet i've only had bad experiences with travellers and i worked in blackburn so i know what they were talking about on the program and i knew the areas they filmed.

When the travellers move into town, I certainly take another look at our security(or lack off lol)....and I have good reason for doing that :mad: :thumbsup:

I have to admit surprise, I know Betty who owns the pines where the reception was held is claiming to be skint. But her standards really must be slipping.
I think she has an 8 grand minimum spend for a wedding. This lot must have nicked on hell of a load of lead.
Just talked to my younger daughter who worked that bar/night. The bar had to be shut early as they went stupid, going over to Asda and trying to smuggle booze in
What about the girl who didnt get married until she was 22, because she stayed on to finish school and had a job in a call center? She was marrying the guy from Ireland who was a labourer, poor girl it sounded like she had a good life in front of her Ihope that it is not ruined by him and having to move to ireland.

Complete rubbish. The only reason the women don't go out is because they are seen as property and are threatened with violence if they did.
The men go out just as much as any other young folk. I know cause the pubs where I used to live were full of them.
The best bit of thet program was the convoy of transit vans with ladders on the roof leaving the church.

While I'm sure there are some nice law-abiding travellers (and some in the porgramme came across as being OK), I find it baffling why they seem so outraged at the rest of the country's attitude towards them. There is a reason that people are wary about them, and that is generally personal experience of local trouble and thefts wherever they go. If they are all so nice how come these 'coincidences' keep happening???
A few settled in a house down my street last year, and the elderly lady who lives next door has had no end of grief and is really scared of them. Last thing I heard she'd found out they were tapping into her phone line...
TBH I was surprised about the focus on morals and religion, I hadn't realised that about travellers. But if it is such a tight and religious community why aren't they policing their own? But TBH if you have no education or career prospects and don't try and integrate, there isn't much work out there for you, so stealing becomes one of the few options left.
And anyway how else are you going to fund those wedding dresses??! ;)

What's the chances the hotel that cancelled the wedding reception has since suffered an arson attack? The woman made it very clear they wouldn't get away with it.

My only experience of what I will call pikeys is the people who came to my village in North Lanarkshire and camped on a piece of common ground, stayed for about six weeks, and ran a fairground on the site for one week each summer.
They bought a local crime wave to a village where most of the people were already scum, but didn't s**t on their own doorstep because they were all inbred so would be stealing from a cousin and their uncle would kick their head in, OK a bit of exaggeration, but that was a realistic scenario, everyone knew everyone so you could leave you car keys in the ignition overnight and nobody would touch it.
Every time they came a number of local caravans were stolen and an equal number of their caravans, would be left burned out on the site when they left, along with burnt grass from a hundred open fires, and so much rubbish it took the council a day with a JCB to clean it up.
These guys did come across as the cleanest living on the planet on the show, but knuckle fighters and "they won't get away with it" kind of give the game away, Pete's been to one of the sites shown to recover stolen vehicles several times, so were these guys on the programme gypsies, pikeys, or travellers?

My neighbour used to bare knuckle fight, but said it was hard against the gypos as they would scarper before paying up. Yet if you lost they were straight on you for the money.
Round here, they invade private and public property, treat it as a toilet, and dump. moan like hell in the press and rob every house/car they go near.
The are now getting naughtier, buy a bit of land, apply for planning permission for "stables" and build storage/toilet blocks attempting to convert green fields into permanent gypo camp.
They also tend to do it at times when they know they are going to be undisturbed. good friday was when they took over one field in Longridge, knowing they would have at least 5 days to get their work done before the council could react. Then put in retrospective planning and refuse to move as they own the land etc.

My missus comes froma travelling family ( couple of generations back ), and even a generation after they stopped travelling they still stick to some of the same attitudes
Her mother was made told to give up work by her grandmother once she'd gotten married as she was now to be looked after and her job was the house and pop out kids
Her mother had been encoraged to marry her 2nd cousin
when she refused she was shipped to Australia so as not to shame the family anyfurther
Her grandfather moved onto his daughters once the wife was not interested in sex any more ( and the whole community knew this)
when he retired he sold everything and went back to ireland to live
When he died the extended family allowed his wife and kids to go into the van take 1 thing of sentimental value and then burnt it out
This guy had traveller values but had a proper job ( english teacher in a catholic school ) so the worst of both worlds

A few years ago, they invaded a local industrial park opposite one of the biggest loyalist housing estates in NI and refused to move unless they were "paid" for their trouble. The RUC is it was then said they couldn't do anything as it was a civil matter. One of the local paramilitaries went over, and had a word, they were gone in 15 minutes.:rolleyes:
From my own personal experiences, they steal anything that isn't nailed down and think the world owes then a living.

That has happened not far from me - havent heard of any trouble (yet) but I noticed more and more buildings going up near to the "stables". Blooming cheek :|
