What's attractive about a lass who looks like she goes to bergen-belsen health spa?
I know, it's a bit odd. Apparently the average size of the Uk female is reckoned to be around a 16 (source - Radio 4 interview today).
Thing is, these girls don't even look healthy half the time.

Completely agree with you. I have never met anyone who sees a picture like the one in your page and goes "Man, she's hot!" it's usually "Eurgh, wtf she anorexic?"
Need a bit of cushion for the pushing. :p
Hate skinny girls, its like a childs body.
I want a real girl, not some bag of bones.
Defo not cool or hot.
And a serious matter, with 6 to 20% (ref below) of people with anorexia nervosa eventually dying from the disorder, its quite sad really. People don't realise that many of these people are not simply 'vain' but truly have an underlying mental problem.

In the UK we have:
150,000 anorexic or bulimics
&
13 million obese
I wouldn't throw the magazines away just yet ;)
Oh come on!
Skinny women are idolised, and its all well and good chaps typing on here that they prefer woman with some curves etc but is that actually the case or is that just so you come across better?
Example, I have always been worried about my weight.. OH says he likes me with some meat on (err not what you wanna hear mind lol) yet he will sit in a bar drooling over really skinny burds...so what is said and what people do are totally different. No wonder girls become anorexic... dam it if i could be bothered i would!! A close friend of mine has gone from a 14 down to a size 6/8 and she still freaks out about how many calories are in the coffee i just made her :smt091
As much as it is totally silly, and as much as you say you dont ever want to be that skinny - its a total lie and i sooooo do

What's wrong with corsets? A lot of very sexy women (including several on here) really like them.
I personally like slim girls, but not emaciated stick insects like the one on Stingos facebook group - that's just wrong.
Mrs Wyrdness is a lovely slim-but-very-curvy size 8. Just perfect, in my opinion. Is she too slim, or look wrong in a corset? I don't think so.

A fair point. I think most men do like curves. Curves mind, not spare tyres. But there is a limit, and looking emaciated is well past it IMO. And it's one thing to look, but most of the girls you look at you wouldn't want to live with. And as a man, even I would rather not be a bit chubby. But I couldn't spend hours in the gym each week and spend a fortune on protein shakes just to look buff, so I'm just grateful I'm not a natural porker and try and leave off the crisps and biscuits.
I have to make the point that getting old will destroy everyone's looks eventually, so having some qualities beyond a good bod/face is worthwhile. I used to work with someone who had once been v.good looking and traded solely on her looks, and her obsession with weight and prettiness was quite sad. I'm glad I've never had the look in the first place, it'll pay off in the long run.

Joined! TBH i can find something sexy in a sexy woman almost entirely regardless of their size and shape but i do draw the line at too big or too skinny.
A sexy woman exudes sexyness not from her size or what she wears but the way she carries herself and the look in her eyes but i guess thats just me.
It was interesting to hear this week that Debenhams (i think it was them) had put size 16 mannequins in their shop window on oxfrord street for the first time and if the response is good they plan to put them in all their shops.
its about time the media and fashion world got out of this nonsense about the "body beautiful" being a suer fit, super healthy gym bunny looking thing. Yes they can be nice to look at but feeling a far too toned gym body girl makes me feel like a let down as a man if she is ore toned and trim than i am.
Man = hairy body, and slightly firm and muscular
Woman = smooth skin (mostly lol) and soft and luscious
thats my stereotypes anyways :)

Until you have had your hands all over a shpely female form and also a ultra tones gym body you wont know which you prefer of course...says the man whos been lucky enough to have had both and know what he likes :)

My OH is size 16 top half and 14 bottom half, and that's more attractive to me than some Victoria Beckham type clotheshorse.
I read somewhere that so many clothes designers are gay men, they design them to look good on models who resemble themselves as skinny teenagers, probably just psychobabble though.

Pointys are better than curvys. Another fact backed up by a journal
^ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anorexia_nervosa#cite_ref-45) L3nn'ys study into what bikes I like. (July 2008). The International Journal of nice bikes 28 (1): 20–6.
Back on subject, some girls look good skinny, some girls look good with a few curves. saying that fancying skinny girls is wrong just because a few nutters take it to the extreme and make themselves ill is crazy. As has already been said there are way more overweight and obese people in this country than people who don't eat enough. A little bit of encouragement not to scff that second donut isn't a bad thing.

Surely those celeb mags with their "[Insert C class celebrity here] just lost 8lbs! Found out her secret weight loss guide!" are contributing to the problem. I still find it amazing how so many people can be interested in a celebrity's body weight - let alone be interested in a celebrity.

Maybe, but I've lived with a woman who always struggled with her weight, was bulimic in her teens, and TBH I'd have preferred her just to be happy and big rather than constantly on Slim-fast/Slimming World/Cambridge Diet and wasting hundreds over the years on rowing/running/stepping machinery. She'd always start off really dogmatic and knacker herself trying to shift weight, and then put weight on eating cake, then start from the beginning.

gigggggggggggles !! ewww how skinny !!!
its a funny thing taste really .... one man's meat is another poisen and all that stuff..... me i have never felt happier with my body, i eat well i do excercise a little and I have been both extremes very over weight and very under weight so i can say with a degree of accuracy that the key is actually feeling good about yourself regardless of size ... not arogant just confident. Its taken me a long while to realise this simple fact.
I find a lot of women attractive ( and some of u hot men too;)) as I see them for who they are as well as how they look and all this rubbish trying to be 'perfect' is bull sh!t My best friend who has had two children is one of the most beautiful people i know and her body is not model perfect and she hates this about herself ... I see her gorgeous body is the result of bringing two beautiful children into the world and that in its self is wonderful thing. She is sexy as hell too !!

Mrs Ed is a real woman. Size 14 and gorgeous:D
Izi thinks she's a bit chubby. She's size 10 FFS, and gorgeous.. slim but not skinny. I spent a lot of time talking to her before I met her, and found a beautiful person who I wanted to be with.. I've always thought beauty comes from inside, and that most of the models i ever see in pictures leave me cold.
I don't like the look of really skinny people, it's my taste. But if they're a nice person, I don't give a toss what they look like.
Perhaps it shouldnt be a size thing at all, as all you are doing is swapping one stereotype for another.
Honestly if women were just able to feel comfortable for what they have been given, there wouldnt be half the trouble with teenagers becoming uncomfortable with their own bodies.
I think it takes women a lot longer to come to terms with their bodies then men do, I may be wrong here please feel free to correct. I hardly every hear men complaining about their bodies and if I do they are doing something constructive to fix the problem.
Women seem to have a harder time finding a balance with feeling right in their own skin. I honestly am not sure just by getting rid of the "skinny" pictures is going to erase all of that, however, it might go a long way to the younger generation feeling as if they are allowed to be other sizes.

I'm a 12,, most people think I'm smaller for some reason....maybe its because I choose clothes that flatter, I'm far from fat (well maybe soon) but far from skinny. A size 8 to me is too thin...but if a lady is petit in the height dept too, then its very complementary. A lady of my height and build would look ill if she were a size 8.
Zero sized women look like skeletons, I think they should be taken to McDonalds twice a week on an acceleration to pile on a few pounds!
Women feeling comfortable in their own bodies is a strange thing. Izi is slim, not to thin and certainly not fat. She doesn't lack confidence in herself or her abilities, yet no matter how many times I tell her she's beautiful, compliment her or anything like that, she still feels unhappy in her body sometimes. I don't uderstand it. I think she's stunning.

It's a funny one. I think this will take years to change. There are too many women in the world with the picture of the ideal woman imprinted in her brain, this will naturally be passed down and it will take generations before we start to see a real improvement.
Problem is, anorexia can be caused by so many triggers, not necessarily a teenager who starts dieting and becomes obsessed. Whilst it's not right that pictures of anorexic women are used in fashion magazines, I think they are but a tiny, tiny drop in the ocean.
There is a lot of emphasis on how women look. For example, I very rarely wear make up and my friends nag at me about it but I am comfortable without it, same as generally, I will wear jeans, trainers and tshirts, unless we are having a proper night out. But I am comfortable and happy wearing those and it really bugs me when they try and change me. Then they start with the "you're just too self concious to try something different" an that REALLY gets my goat!
Perhaps we should just allow people to be who they want to be instead of trying to stereotype them all the time.
And as a side comment, I used to be like a stick I was so slim and all I heard was people going on about how skinny I was and I hated it. I ate like a horse but was active.

Other women are not so nice to each other in this area either, it goes only to highlight their own insecurities but doesnt make meeting the horrid mentalities either.
For example; I went to use the toilets in a pub using the mirrors were a group of three or four girls obviously all friends, they took one look at me and then started making horrid comments on "women who let themselves go" they were making highly personal attacks on my looks, and in particular the fact that I wasnt wearing make-up.
Change is going to take a long time your right, and it has to come from many different directions, not least of all other women.

Women who don't wear make up are women who have let themselves go eh?
Well I'm one of those, and I can tell you Anna I'd much rather be one of us, than the orange put on with a trowl gang. To me they are the ones that are too self conscious, and are clearly lacking in self confidence that they have to hide behind a hideous mask!
You've been busy in here tonight!
My concern lies with the way certain parts of the media and fashion industry seem to promote or allow themselves to promote a certain percentage of women in a particular way when clearly they are abnormally thin. They should have the guts to say 'look, go home and have few pies, fried egg sarnies etc then we'll see hoe you look'. I feel it's just not right that they can be viewed as a kind of role model, sort of ironic really. I know things of this nature won't change, but I think it's worth highlighting non the less, and thankyou for your input everyone.

Unfortunately you will never change the body image a woman has in her head and that is plain and simple fact.
I don't think that magazines are to blame at all, I agree about the attitudes of other women. As for the bitchyness, well its all to make themselves feel superior isnt it? Some women are just so self absorbed they cant see beyond that.
Besides, the skinny starvation thing isnt about looking at size 0 models and wanting to be like them, its a control method and is one way that a girl or woman can feel like she is in charge of her body. The reason for low self esteem and negative body image usually stems from being teased and taunted whilst growing up rather than looking at pictures in magazines.
At the end of the day, it all boils down to how we treat each other really. Cruelty has a huge impact on people and can make them do dangerous things to themselves and others.
My friends are all beautiful and each of them have at least something I would love to nick off them whether it be face, skin, hair, legs etc and that is a natural admiration and is healthy.

Hi Vt...
A couple of comments about your worthy post if I may...
Whilst I understand the sentiments of your first paragraph, I believe the word 'never' may be somewhat extreme. I feel certain that there are persons recovering from eating disorders and issues of body image. It's a bit like saying (IMO) 'All the swans I've ever seen are white, therefore the next swan I see will be white'. We know that black swans exist, so that premise has to be untrue, admittedly there aren't many black swans but I'm sure you understand what I'm driving at.
The other issue is not really aimed at those individuals who feel that they must slim. slim and slim some more because they feel they must or they feel fat or whatever their issue is. I am more concerned with the people who wish to employ and then parade these poor souls in a public forum (or any other forum for that matter) with the aim of making money - because that is what it is about - selling clothes/accessories, promoting an image/promoting a particular brand name when it is perfectly clear that they are unhealthily thin (to define this may be a little more complex but again, just for a moment humour me here and stay a littlke flexible!)
I understand that a group on a social website isn't going to move gravel, nevermind mountains, but it does help to bring the issue out into the open a little more for hopefuly constructive comment and discussion.
I will leave the corsetry and make up for a different thread as that has the potential to open up a whole other can of worms!!
PS I like corsets....just not on me though!!

What about the men who spend vast amounts of time at the gym? And drink protein shakes every morning? Personally I'm happy enough with my body, I don't think it's particularly attractive, but it is healthy and outside of the skull perfectly normal. Plenty of men aren't happy with how they look, but most don't talk about it. It's not really the done thing.

Your right it isnt that the problem alone lies with women, I am sorry but I was under the impression that as we are talking about catwalk models and as they are mainly female that this discussion was limited to females. My mistake.
