Uncomfortable? Yes I didn't really find it particularly comfortable but then I've yet to find one I'm really happy with for any length of time.

I find it awful too, in fact the bike is a nightmare for me on the knees as well for some reason.

Is there a cheaper alternative to the OEM gel seat? Got a 1500 mile round trip coming round and at the moment it's enough of a challenge to hack 100 miles on the bike let alone closer to 300

Bagster and Corbin do seats for the SV. I've got a Bagster one - much better than stock. It replaces the pillion seat too.

Get yours modified by this guy, cheaper and easier than finding an OEM gel seat. He'll just un-staple your cover, insert the gel pad and restaple your original cover back in place.

Or you can do this yourself. I think you can by gel pads from horsey places. Just cut it down to size, the cover is only stapled on.

Judging by your thread in the Euro section I would recommend you go out and get an #OEM gel seat#, off Eaby for 40 quid. I paid that off a member on here, but I wouldn't pay much more off the bay.
I have got one of these on my black SV and they are perfectly adequate for a Euro trip, as I bought one specifically for it.
However, I have a Corbin on my yellow SV which is far superior, they dont crop up very often, I was lucky enough to get one from another forum member for 50 quid. They do appear on Ebya every now and again, but rarely.

Now, as for Maviczaps recommendation of Tony Archer, he is exceptionally good, and his rates are fair, he will indeed take your old seat and give it you back far more comfortable than it went in. My ex has had an RD350LC seat done there, and also had a gel pad put in his VRaptor seat. The fee for this was more than 50 quid IIRC.
#I am having my seat sent eventually to him to have the OEM gel seat recovered. The curvey gel seat has a fabric covering which feels like a wet nappy when its peeing down with rain, and on a 600 mile journey across France that doesn't feel great#

So you have three very good options, all within the same price range.

Problem solved for under 7 quid!

Forget what it says about occasional use, you're not going to be doing any pedalling in them, just sitting still, so they won't wear out.

I had never thought of wearing my cycle shorts on the motorbike before, but when you think about it, it is pretty obvious. Cheers Ralph for a good tip.

Generally speaking, I find the SV front saddle quite comfortable and the pillion pad is OK for about sixty miles before it makes my back side ache. The biggest problem I have on the front though is it makes my right hip displace slightly and that is hellish painful and will ache for a few hours after, even once I have got it back in the right position.

Funny you should say that. If anyone has ever seen me bobbing up and down like a yoyo, standing on the pegs during rideouts and shaking a leg, that's what I'm trying to fix.

In a funny way, I am glad that I am not alone in this.

Happened to me while climbing a few years ago. Hip clicked out and I got stuck at about eighty feet up. :smt082

I have wondered about lowering the pegs, but would worry about reduced road clearance.

Same here, I've had it a few times where I've stretched a leg and my hip has locked, I've had to stand up and wave my leg around until I could sit down without being in excruciating pain.

The Sv seat is the most uncomfortable seat I've ever had on a bike. I've had a few motards too and they have planks of wood for seats but I've still got used to them. I've never got used to the SV seat though. I really must get something sorted out as it does spoil the bike.

I got my seat shaved down (for my tiny tiny legs...) and it seems to have sorted the numb **** problem. When the excess foam was taken out it made the surface area wider and got rid of the rediculous edges in the foam.

In short £25, problem solved (i got a car upholster company to do it).

The pointy seat used to make my bum and other parts numb with pins and needles after 50 miles. I've done 400+ on the 600rr and felt brilliant. Completely comfortable in comparison.

Different heights and legs lengths make a big difference.

I have a custom made seat on mine including a gel pad. But I bought my husband an Airhawk seat for his F650gs and he swears by it. It does look a bit like a whoopee cushion, and at £150 is expensive but you can take it from bike to bike.

Good stuff, so the solution is to buy a cbr600rr? Works for me as I wanted one since the test ride anyway.

If I could get a gel seat for £40 I'd do it but eBay has one for £150 so not looking good!

The Corbin seat makes all the difference. Not only is it comfortable but it is about two inches lower than the standard seat. You feel as if your sitting in the bike rather than on it. This also has the benefit of reducing the strain on the wrist. There ridiculously expensive but if your lucky (as I was) you may find one on ebay.

I actually found the official gel seat makes some difference but not as much as it should for over £100. If I was rich I'd buy the corbin but can't really justify it. I find motorways a nightmare as you are sat in the same position all the time, which causes a fair amount of pain!

I have fitted a cushion, or an 'inflatable stadium seat' to be more accurate.

I bought it from Putnams http://www.putnams.co.uk/travel.htm.

It works on the same principle as an Airhawk for a fraction of the price. Its very comfortable ,no numb bum and the channel down the middle takes pressure off the pelvic bone so no numb tackle.

I am sure their are those who will dismiss it because it is cheap but it is well made and robust. I have never used a gel; corbin; or airhawk seat so cannot make a comparison but it works for me. The photos do make it look more bulky than it actually is.

If you decide to give it a go you simply need to remove the poppers, tie on with 3mm shock/bungee cord and semi-inflate to the level you find comfortable, fully inflated is not effective. Its the perfect size for the SV and for me has transformed long distance riding.

Some BMW user went a bit nuts for it in December so you may want to read their opinions on it http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=203852.

It does add slightly to the seat height so if your at full stretch scooping out the seat as you suggest is probably a better idea.

As to whether its secure or not that is something that concerned me when I first fitted it, and I had intended to put industrial strength velcro between it and the seat but as it turned out the cord, pulled tight, has held it firmly in position.
