View Full Version : Caught by a camera in the car

Got flashed by a fixed camera in Northampton, when I looked down my speedo indicated approx 40 mph.

Just kept my speed up off a mini roundabout when the limit goes from 40 to a 30 downhill, turned to look at a mate to say something, before I remembered it was too late. Looked down, THINK it said about 40 mph.

Boss just said, lets hope it was no higher than 40.

Can't remember the legalities, so...Am I going to jail? :smt018

Probably - not for any speed related offences but quite possibly for groping Simon at Hell pizza last week.

Oh dear, it gets worse, I don't remember anyone called Simon

I meant Paul. God, I am losing the plot. Was on the phone to Simon when I sent this. Blame the vast quantities of Codeine I had for breakfast and the fact it is Monday morning.

I just got done for 60 in a 30 (I know but it wasn't as bad as it sounds) and got 6 points without having to appear in court.
At 40 in a 30 you will probably get 3 points and £60 or maybe a speed awareness course, if you do that it costs £100odd but you don't get points.

Sweeeeeet, thanks shifter.

I'm normally real good in the car, this was a lapse in concentration but unexcusable.

You will probably be fine mate. You might not get anything at all. Just keep your fingers crossed.

I think it was down to the squeeky clean licence from day 1 (not so much as a parking ticket) and the fact I've never had an accident.
Plus I held my hand up completly and didn't give them a big sob story they've heard 1000 times before.

Perfectly placed to catch as many unsuspecting and normally law abiding motorists as possible then...

If it was a Gatso there was probably no camera in it, just a radar and a flash unit.

I assume it's a company vehicle since you mentioned your boss' comments?

That's a point, if it's a company car then the 14days rule does not apply.

thats handy, cos it sounded to me like you were doing double the speed limit in a built up/residential area and was pretty bloody awful!

but thankfully it wasnt as bad as it sounds....

Good question, I'm not entirely sure if it is classed a a company vehicle. I think so, but I remember something when deal was signed that there were other addresses and names used.

If its got film etc depending on the area you may get a speed awareness course if offered take it. But considering you were 40 in a 30 (or more like 38 if speedo was 40) your getting a fine n points (3).

Lancs police did me for 39 in a 30 zone first offence 30-35 was classed as no ticket 35-37 was a course, anything higher fine n points!

(agreed ralph btw)

OK, so it's not registered to you at least.

That's a point, if it's a company car then the 14days rule does not apply.

The rule still does apply, in that they need to notify the registered keeper within 14 days, but the registered keeper could be a leasing company, or it could be the employer. The registered keeper then has to respond either with details of who was driving, or who it is that can provide that info.

So it could be:

NIP within 14 days to lease company, they provide details of Plowsie's employer who leases it
NIP to Plowsies employer, they provide Plowsie's name and address as the driver.
NIP to Plowsie.

It could take months before Plowsie gets an NIP

If the vehicle is registered to Plowsie's employer, they may be able to tell him straight away if they receive an NIP. Some employers don't though, either because they are too big for the fleet department to care who Plowsie is, or because it's their policy just to provide the details and not get involved any further.

Actualy it was in a rural area, on a Sunday, I was the only vehicle in sight on a road I know like the back of my hand in clear dry conditions and was for a distance of about 50 yards.
I went all the way through the 30 at spot on the limit but accelerated about 20 yards before the increasing limit sign rather than after it, and then took a sharp left turn about 50 yards later.
I didn't cross a single junction or drive way and the road has 20ft wide verges on both sides and then barbed wire 10ft fences on either side of those.
I could stop in the distance I could see to be clear very very easily.
I know 30 implies a built up area, but not all of them are.
There was no danger to myself or anyone else.
Didn't actualy even mention any of this, just admited my mistake and took the punishment.

Well depending on the outcome, we are going to ask for the picture to determine who was driving. Purely because I know my face will be a state off p1$$edoffness and my colleagues want to see it and I guess frame it, because I was saying just the other day in the office that I had been very lucky not to have had in the 3 years of driving, any points.

What my boss will say is that we need to determine who was driving as we had a change around on that day. Gives me time to find some cash.

Was it a front facing camera? Was it on your side of the road or the opposite side? If the opposite side did it have the markings on your side of the road?

Yes, opposite, and yes. There is no way out of it Ralphster, I am a hooligan and a thug, and deserve sentencing

If it was on the other side, i know they sometimes have lines both sides but i understood they did not apply, ie they were there just to make you slow down and that you could not be convicted by them.

-Ralph-

A gasto certainly gives a negative reading from oncoming traffic, ie: it says you were doing -36 mph, but whether they can convict from that I don't know. May have been a Truvelo though and I have no idea how they work.
