yeah this has been asked before but when is search i get nearly every thread ever created come up
basically im hoping the bike to be finished and ready for MOT by next weekend (fingers crossed). My problem is i'm unsure whether or not I'll have a van so i may have to ride it, i know you can ride to and from an MOT station providing you can prove that's what you were doing but my bike has no tax either and is SORN...... obviously cant tax it until i have the MOT
I've done it a few times before without an MOT but knowing my luck I'd chance it and get pulled
p.s. dont hold you breath

You can ride it to a pre-arranged MOT

Funny that, was talking to YC this afternoon about the very same thing, for when I have to do both mine later int year!
Tax/SORN status doesn't matter if going to a pre-arranged MOT. It'd be a very anal plod that did you between the MOT station and the post-office!

Just beware you must have a minimum of 3rd party insurance in place if you're on the road no matter what the status of your bike's MOT or VED

Yeah, you can ride to anf from an MOT station for a pre-arranged test. You cant stop anywhere en route either way, so stopping for tax is a no no. Just ride home, tax online, print the receipt and you're done

There was a test case, guy stopped for fuel and a pack of fags and it was deemed reasonable.
All the same, I would not push the boundaries on that one. Home > petrol > MOT.
Only time I would chance it is if there was a post office on the route home.

cheers guys much appreciated, think I'll just fill a few jerry cans up for the bike rather than risk it.... knowing my luck i'd get pulled over

Obviously you still need insurance in place, but don't most policies state that cover is invalid unless you have a valid MOT?
How does that work legally? How are you supposed to do it?
Obviously in reality we just get on and do it. I've driven MOTless cars to and from tests countless times (I once arranged a test 200 miles away because I wanted to get my SORNed Triumph Spitfire over to my parents house in into their garage). But never with a bike.
I need to MOT my bike actually, first time I've done one. Do MOT places have a loan bike they can give you for the day so you don't have to hang around?

You're lucky you didn't get a tug for that - it can only be a reasonable distance.

True enough. But how often does plod tuck in behind you and PNC your plate? Not very often.

Why bother with tax, insurance, and MOT then?

Every time a car is behind you. They have in-car ANPR now.

MOT takes 15 minutes, not worth the hassle!

got another one, my colour change will be going through during the time i want the MOT so i wont have the V5 and my old certificates show the colour as blue, the bike obviously will be sat there a different colour. Will that matter?

No, I doubt it. :smt102:
Never noticed colour was on MOT certs before.

yeah it is, got last cert sat here, and v5 is needed if you cant produce last MOT cert
or have they changed?

I was stopped by Police for no tax disc in the car when I was going for an MOT. So should I not have stopped for them?

Yeah I just edited my last post after going to look at my MOT.
Defo don't need a V5 or old MOT because it's all computerised now innit ;)

do think they will cause a fuss if its still registered as blue when i go to MOT?

No, it will be fine. Chances are that the system will pull it up as what ever colour it was. The tester can chabge the colour on the VTS device if he wants, however I doubt they'll even notice.

You can ride it to a pre-arranged MOT
You can also ride it to a polling station on election day without tax, but I suspect I'm being a tad optimistic here....:D

another one....... are the clock lights an MOT requirement? as in i turn on my lights and the clocks don't light up, indicator and high beam ect they all work just the speedo, rev tacho and the digy mile odo bit doesn't light up
if it is, anyone know what bulbs and how many i need

Nope,
clock lights arent testable. The only tell tale you need are for indicators (but dont even need that if you can see at least one indicator on both sides)

Not the point I was making and you know it!!! ;)
I wouldn't even consider dodging tax, insurance or MOT. But equally, I don't fuss over getting a vehicle without any of these to or from a test (you can also drive/ride to or from repairs which are necessary for the test).

You need 3rd party insurance to ride/drive to an MOT.

I recently got a tug the day after purchasing my tax disc from the post office, however i didnt have the allen key I needed to affix it to zee bike.. Off to frauds I pop and get done on the way home!!!!! And it was followed up. Dont take any risks, there are some right douchebag coppers out there that will do you for the minutest of little details just because its another tug on their target sheet.

Helps to see the speedo at night though. Can't remember the number, but instruments are usually those little push-in bulbs. Get the right wattage, or they could melt your instrument panel! I have done this, fortunately to a very crummy 125.

Offence is actually failing to display the disc... did you have it on you? They must have eyes like eagles to see a missing disc on a moving bike! Still, v. anal.
Didnt have the disk on me mate, the copper was literally staring at my bike from 100 meters away allll the way up until i rode past him, he was desperate to find something annnd he did.
And Re the bulb lights - no they arent a fail. Well, if they were, the two stations i took my last bike too (which didnt have working light clusters) didnt notice :)
what about photocopying the real one and keeping it under the seat, the putting the copy in the holder, that way if some no*ber nicks it you still have the original and it will be pretty hard to spot the copy on a bike.

Because it is illegal. You are committing fraud by copying it & representing something that it's not.
you may say the chances of getting caught are remote - but then the potential penalty is much larger.
Why not put the original on the bike, it's what? £7 to replace it? if it's properly secured wha are the chances of it being stolen? :smt102
Or take the holder off the bike completely, what are the chances of an officer looking for it? :smt102

If I were a copper, it'd be one of the first things I look for! Tax, tyres, general state of repair. You need to DISPLAY the tax disc if parked on the road, or you may get a tow.

i brought a bike back from Germany quite a few years ago and it sat for a few years in a garage at my in laws. My father in law and his mate decided to strip the bike and rebuild it after it sitting so long.
I needed to take it for an MOT prior to getting it taxed and registered. I had insurance (using chassis number) and had booked into a test centre. I checked with the police before I went as i was riding a bike with no MOT or tax or number plate.
I was very surprised that i didn't get stopped. But i didn't.
